~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I let out a breath and leaned against the sides of my window in the attic. The sun was rising, spilling its orange hues into last remnants of darkness, chasing them away. Birds took to the sky, singing out their morning song as they circled around each other in greeting.

The cool morning breeze blew gently into my room, blowing my hair around my face in a teasing greeting. I smiled as I took in a breath of fresh air, the calm silence of the morning soothing to me.

Today was Saturday and I was told to work in the diner for the whole day.As it was, I worked every day in the diner except for Mondays and Fridays. I was told that if I wanted pocket money to survive on, I had to work for it because it was not a free world out there.

Fiona hinted that if I wanted to stay under her roof with a warm bed and meal to fill my stomach, I had to repay her "kindness" by doing labour for her. As long as she didn't have to see my face she was contented. And that was why I had to work in the diner. Even though that diner used to belong to my father.

Fortunately, the diner was really popular and many of our customers would visit us, mostly for lunch and dinner. I was kept occupied with the cooking, the ordering and the cleaning and when I went back to the house, I would do my chores and go straight up to my room to do my homework or study. It was this regime that I was under that allowed me to live a relatively peaceful life where I kept contact with Fiona and the twins to a minimum.

But it was also because of this regime that I could not experience what they call "the normal high school life". Never once had I the opportunity to go to the movies, nor had I the opportunity to just hang out freely with my friends without the oppressive weight of Fiona's demands on me. Never had I the opportunity to interact with other much less make new friends. In her own way, Fiona was chaining me down to her.

It  was why I sought refuge in the Fighting Ring. Without me knowing, it had become my place of solace, a place I could run to if I ever needed a form of escape. And after last night, that place had become something even more special. A smile flittered across my face and my face heated as I recalled the oddly sensual experience.

I jerked with a start at the sudden banging on the door to my room. I frowned and padded cautiously towards it. The occupants of this house never woke up early...

Slowly,I lifted the trap door to my room and saw Heather glaring up at me.Her eyes were red and puffy and swollen around the edges. I blinked once to clear my vision, afraid that I was seeing things. I blinked again. No, this was definitely Heather.

"Get me some medication, dweeb!" she shouted in my face, her swollen face red. Snot dribbled out of her nose but she managed to send me a  venomous look before marching back down to her room.

My eyes trailed after her, the all to familiar ice settling over me. The cold fury that I kept pent up swirled around the edges, threatening to break my control. It was such mistreatment that fed the demon within me and day after day, I could feel the ice and darkness growing within me. Taking in a deep breath, I decided to take a quick shower before changing into my house maid clothes to fetch Heather her medication.

As I padded through the empty carpeted hallways, I couldn't help but feel the emptiness of the house. There was no life here, only cold calculated decorations that screamed wealth. The walls were dark maroon and the heavy drapes were closed over the windows, blocking the sunlight out. Luckily the house was not in its usual mess since I had cleaned it up the night before going to bed. I would have hated to wake up to a garbage dump.

I stood on my toes as I opened the top cupboard in the kitchen. It was a spot that would be difficult to reach by Fiona and the twins since they rarely used their energy other than to paint on layer after layer of make up on their faces. I usually put the medication in a hidden compartment because the twins and Fiona tend to take an    overdose of medication. And when they did that, they usually coupled the binge with alcohol that would make them not only slightly violent but desperate for attention. I would not put it beyond myself to find condoms littered around the house.

I pulled down the eye drop and made a cup of hot milk. Holding the cup with one hand and an ice pack with the other, I made my way swiftly towards the twins' bedroom. There I found Tasha snoring loudly, her night dress pulled all the way up to her chest, revealing a pair of chunky legs and Heather who was propped up against the headboard of her bed. She scowled at me when I entered.

"Hurry up loser! I need to look beautiful again!" She cried, flailing her arms up dramatically and rolled her eyes back.

I cringed inwardly at the sound of her horrible screeching and quickly put two drops of the eye medication into her eye, set her cup of milk at her bedside table before rushing off back to my room. I really didn't like having direct contact with any of the twins.

I glanced at the clock. Seven.

I sighed and ran a hand through my hair. My heart skipped a beat as my hair slipped through my fingers like water. Havoc. His very name sent shivers down my spine. My mystery man. The man who was sweet enough to do the gruelling task of untangling my hair but was also fierce enough that the intense fire within him called to mine.

Just the thought of him caused the longing within me to intensify. My demon called out to be released, pushing against the restraints so that my skin itched and my eyesight sharpened. Taking a deep breath,I struggled to gain control of myself, to centre my thoughts at anything other than Havoc. He was an aphrodisiac, one that if I was being truly honest with myself, that I didn't one to escape from.

Changing into a pair of jeans and a navy blue shirt with a collar, I pulled on my sneakers, grabbed my backpack and made my way down to the kitchen.I quickly made a pot of coffee and set it in the middle of the table before heating up leftovers from last night.

I peered at the food spinning around in the heater and frowned. The funny looking food was sort of melting and dripping water from its sides. It looked like an odd version of fish and chips. Shuddering at the thought of even consuming such atrocity, I dumped my share into the bin and placed the rest on the table. I didn't really care what the twins or Fiona were going to put into their stomach.

Not wanting to stay in the house a minute longer, I dashed out the door, across the lawn and onto the pavement. The sun's rays warmed my chilled bones as I made my way leisurely towards the diner, humming to myself as I did so. I was determined to carry one the wonderful feeling I had from last night. Nothing was going to dampen my mood today.

When I reached the glass door of the diner, I could smell the sweet aroma of pancakes as it drifted out from the diner. The familiar scent made me smile and my mouth water in anticipation. I could not wait to taste our diner's infamous pancakes. Pushing up my oversized glasses further up my nose, I pushed open the door to the diner quietly.

"Sister? Are you in here?" I called out as I stepped into the diner, closing the door softly behind me.

"In here Elle!"

I followed the soft feminine call to the kitchen and found Sister Suzanne tossing a pancake expertly up into the air and catching it with a plate. I clapped my hands appreciatively, earning a smile from her.

"Come here Elle! Have some pancakes!"

Sister Suzanne beckoned me with her hand to sit while she poured honey over the pancake. I took in a deep breath, bringing the sweet scent offreshly cooked pancakes into my lungs. Ah... These were the pancakes that I had been eating since my parents passed away. It was one ofthe things that anchored the memories of my beloved parents to my  soul.

"Go on, have a bite," Sister said, sitting herself beside me, propping her chin on her hand, a soft smile on her face.

I glanced at her from the corner of my eye before cutting a big slice of pancake. I looked at it and swallowed. So tempting. I saw Sister Suzanne nod her head at me. I gulped and bit into the pancake. Its sweet flavour burst through me and I sighed happily before taking another bite, and another, and another. In a matter of minutes, the whole pancake was nowhere to be seen. I blushed and thanked Sister for the wonderful meal.

"No problem Elle, dear," She said, patting my shoulder affectionately."You deserve it."

I smiled at her and helped her to wash the plates. The least I could do in exchange for such a wonderful meal.

"Elle!"

I turned towards the oddly familiar voice. I groaned as Dani bounded up to me and enveloped me in one of her bear hugs. It was no ordinary bear hug. It always left me on the floor because Dani would always wrap her legs around my waist and her arms around my neck, leaning her whole weight on me until I fell down.

"Dani!"I cried in between laughter, ruffling her hair.

Dani just grinned at me unrepentant.

"Gooood morning, Elle! Good morning sister!" she said with a huge smile on her face.

Shaking my head, a smiled still plastered on my face, I stood up and brushed at my clothing. I looked at Dani and found that she was practically glowing with happiness. Her eyes were especially bright and I noticed that she had her hair and nails done.

I narrowed my eyes at her, folding my arms across my chest. "Dani...."I said, my voice low. Dani never went to get her nails nor hair done before. Something must have happened to trigger her into doing something so unusual for her.

Dani pouted at me. "Oh come one Elle, is it really so weird that I went to pamper myself a little?"

I simply cocked an eyebrow, telling her without words that it was a nonsensical question that required no answer. Dani had never even considered such a thing when she wanted to "pamper herself". She was already beautiful to begin with. She didn't need anything else that would mask that natural beauty.

Squirming slightly under the intensity if my gaze, she looked away, trying to avoid my gaze. I merely continued to stare her down, my jaw set and body rigid.

"Alright, alright! Marcus asked me out alright!" she burst, flinging her hands up. I watched as she slump down in the kitchen chair, her head down.

For a moment, I was speechless, my feet glued to the ground. I felt my heart thunder in my chest as I gazed at the girl I considered my blood sister. The girl who's been my best friend from I was still little. The girl who had been through my parents' death with me and tried sharing my pain.

I knelt slowly beside and grabbed her hands between mine. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The thought of someone hitting on her called on my protective instincts. Knowing that right now wasn't the best time to lecture her, I tampered down those instincts and focused solely on Dani.

"Marcus, the football player asked you out?" I asked softly, my voice a whiplash in the silence. I saw Dani flinch slightly, but she nodded.

She didn't look up at me but her hands tightened around mine. The  silence stretched on as my brain went a thousand mile per hour. Why did he do that, after all these years? Was he playing games with me?Payback for the book incident?

My demon growled. If her even thought of using Dani as a leverage to get to me, if he even thought of hurting her, I would rip his heart out.Biting back the urge to hit something, I gathered Dani into a protective hug.

"If he even makes you shed a single tear, I will rip him to shreds," I said, my voice cold as frost.

At this Dani looked up at me, her expression soft as she cupped my face in between her hand. A small smile played across her lips, amusement clear in her eyes.

"I would advice against that, my dear Elle. He's bound to make me cry sooner or later, but I appreciate the sentiment," she said, her voice light with happiness.

I shrugged.

"Yeah?Well it would not stop me from thinking up creative ways to mutilate him," I said, smiling to take the edge of the dark words.

Dani blinked before falling into a fit of laughter as she threw her arms around my shoulders in a hug.

"I'm so happy Elle! It's like a dream come true!" She exclaimed, looking up at me with her doe eyes, shining with unmasked happiness.

I just hugged her back, trying to push away the cold that crept up on me the moment the hunger for violence surface from inside me. I couldn't help but think the worst of Marcus. After all, I had years to observe his kind. I could never really trust them. I never wanted to see my best friend get hurt because of me. I never wanted to see her hurt at all.

I patted her head affectionately and continued my work. Throughout the whole day, my thoughts were centred on Marcus and Dani. What were hisintentions? Was he being sincere? My demon and I did not believe incoincidence. The sudden act of asking my best friend out wassuspicious, the timing too perfect. The grip on the handle to themetal broom tightened and I heard the groan of metal as it bend under the force of my grip.

Scowling,I headed to the back to see if there were any spare brom.
