Pain...

That was all I felt. My body ached from any slight movement I made while my head felt like it was going to burst. What happened to me?

Fluttering my eyes open, I studied my surroundings carefully. It looked like I was in some kind of prison. When my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I realised that I was correct with my assumptions. I was in a prison...a cell to be exact. Iron bars that looked old and rusty were blocking my only way of escape.

I sniffed the air knowing instantly that I was still in Dark-skull territory. They had locked me up down here for God knows how long and now I was awake to meet complete darkness and silence. Could my life get any worse than this?

Sighing, I slumped against the cold wall bringing my feet closer to me. I was scared, no, frightened. It was the stupidest idea I have ever come up with when I decided to come here. What was I thinking? That they would welcome me with open arms?

Apparently not as they only thought of me as a trespasser, a harmful wolf to their pack. It made me irritated at how all the other wolves only had to lay eyes on their mate for them to have a happy ever after. However, I had to go to extremes and travel to a whole other pack just to make my mate notice me.

Taking a deep breath, I tried to calm my erratic shaking down. I hadn't even noticed it until now.

“You’re awake,” I heard a voice from across me. I crawled over to the bars and peered out of them.  It was a guy about my age, maybe even a bit younger. Staring at him, I wondered if he was talking to me. I came to conclusions that he was as his narrowed eyes never seemed to leave mine.

I couldn’t reply though as my voice was rusty and it hurt when I tried to speak. Just watching him from behind the bars was enough of an answer to him as he quickly exited the prison.

Was this the last day of my life? Where they going to kill me?

No, they were going to give you marshemallows you stupid idiot.

I placed my face in hands praying that a miracle would save me from here, that something would keep me alive.

“Don’t expect anyone to save ya; they’re all bastards who kill anyone that they have a problem with.”

My face snapped up so quickly that I thought I might have cracked a muscle in my neck. I hadn’t expected anyone to be in here since that guy had left, but, looking around now I realised all the prisoners that were locked up in their own cell. All were fast asleep excluding about three who were awake but looked like exhaustion had taken over them.

The cell next to mine held a guy who seemed to be watching me intently. Understanding that he was the one who had spoken, I gave him a blank stare.

He started talking again. “You’re not familiar with this ‘locked up in a cell’ thing are ya?”

I shook my head and cleared my throat, even though it hurt, I spoke.“No.” My voice came out hoarse and I thought he might have not understood me. Just as I was about to repeat it, he nodded his head.

“Yeah I sense that ‘cos ya smell like a powerful wolf. Belong to a pack eh?”

I nodded my head not wanting to explain my life to this stranger even if this was going to be the last day of my life. I waited for him to say something else but nothing came out. He was silent so I decided that our conversation was over.

Crawling back to my original place I breathed in a sigh of distress. In the meantime, the door to the prison opened and in walked five men. Immediately, I recognised Daniel between them looking powerful and gorgeous. My heartbeat accelerated at just the sight of him.

I wanted to get an axe and throw it at him for doing this to me.

I watched carefully as he strode in, his beautiful emerald eyes searching the prison until, in the end, they landed on me. His eyes came to meet mine and, I swear, I saw them darken. Shock would be the only thing to explain his expression right now but only for a second as he seemed to compose himself back to his calm demeanour.

He stared.

It was actually making me uncomfortable the way he just gazed at me with nothing to hint at what he was thinking. His stare was cold with no emotion shown towards me at all. It was plain and hard making my heart beat in agony. He doesn’t want me does he? If he did then he would have shown it, he would have!

Is it bad that I just felt like bringing a pile of red bricks and throwing them at him. .

Biting my lip, I brought my eyes to meet his. Damn, his eyes were so beautiful that I could stare at them all day without getting bored.

“What are you doing here?” he seized out.

My eyes seemed to widen at his bluntness. Great, a question that I hoped he wouldn't ask.

“I – I came because, well,” I cleared my throat using that time to think of any appropriate reasons of what I was doing on enemy grounds. It didn’t help that almost every prisoner who were asleep had woken up to witness this commotion. All eyes were on me.

Daniel raised an eyebrow waiting for my answer. I could detect the annoyance he felt with my actions that instant.

My eyes dropped and faced the ground not daring to give him another glance. His stare was intimidating. Should someone even be intimidated by their mate?

“Well...” He voice startled me but didn’t make me look up. I fiddled with my fingers while biting my lip nervously. Yes, someone can be intimidated by their mate.

“I missed you.”

Once it was out of my mouth I immediately regretted saying it. It was barely a whisper but, in the end, it was the only reason – the real reason – as to why I was here. Maybe he hadn’t heard it, but I doubted that though. Wolf hearing was strong, especially for an Alpha.

After a while of unbearable silence, I heard footsteps moving towards me and then fingers gently wrapping themselves around my chin pulling my face up towards them. I felt a weird sensation of where their fingers came in contact with my skin.

Looking into green eyes of my mate from behind the bars, I couldn’t help but mentally sigh at how wonderful it felt to just be near him. There was something swimming in his eyes but I couldn’t make out what it was. It was hard holding in the temptation of touching his face and tracing his gorgeous features...those luscious full lips that—

He let out a loud sigh dropping my chin in the process. Instantly I missed his touch. His eyes went back to holding that cold and collected behaviour they always did. “Chain her up,” was all he said before leaving the prison.

What?

Please, someone tell me he did not say that.

My heart seemed to break into tiny pieces at just the sight of him leaving. It was just like the first time I saw him but worse. Mates were supposed to protect each other whatever the situation may be. He wasn’t protecting me.

My mum had always told me that a broken heart was one of the many painful things in life. She was right. This pain was nothing compared to the pain I felt when I woke up in here. This one hurt, it hurt so much that I felt my insides tearing apart.

I hadn’t even realised the men chaining me up until I felt the cold metal around my right leg. “Ow!” I cried painfully when they tightened it. It’s not only that it hurt but it felt like it was burning my leg off.

“Don’t transform and you should be fine.” One of the guys instructed while locking the cell I was in. I checked my leg and saw that a red mark was forming where the chains touched my skin. Grimacing, I returned to my original space against the wall.

“They cover these chains with silver ya know? It isn’t much to kill you but can harm,” the guy in the neighbouring cell spoke. “If you transform though, ouch, bad things will happen. Ya might even end up dead.”

“Oh.”

“Eh. Don’t look so worried,” he added noticing how my expression changed, “Ya get used to it, see?” He hit his chained leg hard but didn’t even wince.

“How long – um, have you?” I didn’t complete my question but I think he got the idea as he answered it with no hesitation

“I’ve been in here for two weeks I think, maybe even more maybe even less.” He smiled. I couldn’t help but wonder why he was here because he looked like the type of guy who would be living his life in peace while minding his own business. Had he trespassed like me?

After a long while of comfortable silence, both of us lost in our own thoughts, I decided to ask him the question that was on my mind. “Why...are you here?”

He laughed and rolled his eyes. “Killed one of their pack members nothing big to be honest ‘cos he was the one to attack me, I was simply defending myself.”

Surprised I turned to face him. “You killed one of their pack members?” I asked flabbergasted. Out of all the things I imagined him doing, this would be the last.

“Yeah I did, but like I said before, it was his fault for attacking me in the first place.” He got comfortable on the floor resting his head on the ground.

“Oh, so how long are you going to stay here? Two years?” I asked interested in the subject.

He started laughing which got me confused as to what was funny. Was it something I said?

“You’re funny kid you know that?” He managed to utter out after his fit of laughter. “I think tomorrow’s my last day then...” He brought a finger to his neck and pretended to slice it away from his body.

“No!” I cried out which only brought more pain to my leg when I moved it. He nodded confirming the reality of the situation and that he wasn’t making it up. “They’re going to kill you? But it wasn’t your fault!”

“Hey kid, ya know everyone here is going to die including you, don’t ya?”

I sighed knowing exactly what he meant. I felt myself shaking from anger and hurt. This wasn’t supposed to be happening to me. Daniel was supposed to be helping me, letting me go. Everyone was right, he’s a monster. Why didn’t I believe them?

“Hey at least we won’t see him after we die, right?” Was the last thing he said before we all drifted off to sleep.

*.*.

When I said drifted off to sleep, I thought I would actually have an opportunity to lie down and relax. However, the pain in my leg added to my very disturbing thoughts and my fear of what was going to happen to me was enough to keep me awake the whole time.

The ground was rough providing a very uncomfortable surface for me and the pain in my leg had increased painfully fast. I didn’t dare take a look or I might either freak out or faint because I knew it looked bad.

I heard a loud click and then a door opened. I quickly got up curious as to who was entering now. They must be getting ready to kill me. I wondered what Trent would think when he hears that I had died or worse, that I had walked to my death, that I disobeyed his orders.

Footsteps were the only sound that could be heard in the deadly silence of the cell. My eyes widened when I realised that it was my mate, alone. He was walking towards me with a solemn expression on his face. His eyes never left mine the whole time and I thought that I saw some kind of emotion shimmer in his eyes for a second, but it disappeared as fast as it came.

If I wasn't chained right now, my fist would have connected with his face. "What do you want, you dick?"

Since I was going to die, I felt like the lock on my lips had fallen, leaving me to express everything in my head.

He just stared at me not bothering to answer while taking out a set of keys from his jean pocket. I gulped when I realised those were the same keys that would unlock my cell. Fear coursed through my veins at the thoughts of them taking me to meet my own death. I knew they were cruel just not this much.

He unlocked my cell then came forward and unchained my leg. He paused for a while just gazing at, what I was assuming, a bruise which formed around the bottom of my leg where the chains had been. He stood up then and walked out motioning for me to follow him. He didn’t want to touch me, that I was sure of.

“Please don’t kill me,” I whispered to him as we walked out of the prison grounds and out onto the open air. I was desperate. Maybe I could persuade him one last time? Taking a deep breath, I acknowledged that it was daytime when the sun's light seemed to think it was alright to attack my eyes. I must have been in this cell for a day then.

“I’m not.” He replied walking further into the woods.

My tensed shoulders relaxed at his reply. He wasn’t going to kill me. I had no clue of where we were headed to but the idea of Daniel agreeing to not kill me made me feel relieved and less stressed.

Silently, I followed him through the green parts of his pack ground. I hadn’t met any of his pack members on the way which had me curious as to why they’re not visible. Daniel’s pack was known as the smallest pack in the world consisting of about fifty wolves, but even though they were small they were the most powerful pack, which shows how much power just one of them holds.

I had once heard that Daniel, alone, was able to defeat six wolves who were ganged up against him.

I felt a hand on my wrist pulling me closer to them. From the tingles I felt, I knew exactly who it was. In less than a second, my eyes were staring into my mate's angry ones.

“Listen, this is the second time I’m willingly letting you go. I don’t want to see you again. Next time you interfere or get in my way I won’t hesitate to kill you,” he said. "So, be a good girl and go back to your pack and try to forget I fucking exist, okay?"

How can I forget you exist when you're all I hear about every single day?

Either way, I was being given another chance at life and I wasn't about to blow it by saying something stupid to him. I nodded not being able to utter a word after what he had told me. He didn’t want me just like I expected. I guess the mate bond isn’t as strong as I thought it was. The fact that he was letting me go wasn’t such good news after what I learnt.

“Go.” He instructed looking over at the dark woods.

I bit my lip and took a step forward. I wasn’t sure about this; I didn’t want to leave him. Part of me wanted to think that this was all some joke and that he would bring me back and pull me into his arms, kiss me and tells me that he was joking, however, the other part – the smart part – new that it was never going to happen.

I looked back at him to see his eyes watching me with intensity. When he realised me staring back, he looked away and whispered, “Just go.”

It was all I needed to hear before I transformed into my wolf and took off, swallowed by my own misery.
