The bullet missed Hopkins' head, but Charlie didn't have the same luck.
Stuckagainst a wall after being shoved by Clark, Charlie held the broken spear perforating his stomach with trembling hands and wide-open eyes. Except for his irregular breath and painful grunts, every other sound had ceased.
Charlie was dying, but smirked at Clark. She covered her mouth with the back of her hand and turned away. Spankin' grimaced and threw the rope down, looking at Hopkins.
"Let's go, Clark," he called, jaw clenched.
"Be with you in a minute," she replied, nodding.
Hopkins puckered his lips and, with the girl's help, climbed on the second floor. Clark turned to face Charlie. From above, Hopkins heard the bastard laughing, like his death was the funniest tragedy in the world.
"Too weak to go all the way?" Charlie held a grenade in his bloody palm, chuckling. Clark was too damn close when he pulled the pin. "Too bad you always underestimated me, my love."
Hopkins yelled Clark's name and tried to reach out for her, but Spankin' held him. Charlie threw the grenade on the floor and boom.
The last thing he saw before blacking out was Clark's body flying across the crypt.
