Anna POV
I walked into the halls of the school with Destiny, one of my friends. I walked to my locker and exchanged my books.
I turned my head and saw Luke and the school's biggest slut, Ginger, making out in the center of the hall.
Luke turned around and saw me. His face turned from satisfied to amused. He then whispered something in Ginger's ear. She chuckled and looked straight at me.
I had decided to tell Luke my backstory, trusting he wouldn't tell anyone.. Did he just tell her?
Ginger and Luke came up to me.
" Adopted? So Ashton isn't your brother, he's just some sympathetic guy who felt bad for a girl and told his mom they had to adopt her. I'm sure he's tired with your shit already." She chuckled
I can't believe Luke had told her. Atleast he hadn't told her the other stuff, only the adopted part. I dropped down to my knees, bringing them close to my chest. After minutes of just sitting there, the halls were empty.
I stood up and began pacing back and forth. I ran my fingers through my hair and my breathing fastened. Oh no, it was happening again.
I was having an anxiety attack right in the middle of the hall.
Suddenly, I saw Ashton burst through the doors of the school.
" Ash?" I asked, my heart beating fast, slowing down a bit at the sight of him
" Hey Annabella." He smirked, a devilish smirk, not the quirky fun Ashton smirk I know
He grabbed me by my wrists and looked me into the eyes. " You mean nothing to me, I only had mom adopt you because I felt bad. Now look what I've done to myself, I have to deal with your shit every single day. Just do me a favor and move out or go back to your dad." He said
My eyes widened at his words.
He suddenly lifted a hand up and swung to hit me. I was beyond scared, Ashton never did or would do anything to hurt me... right?
" NO ASH. PLEASE STOP!"
" I have to make you feel pain." He whispered into my ear
" ASHTON!" I cried" WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?"
Ashton just ignored my words " ASHTON! I'M SCARED. PLEASE DON'T HURT ME."
" ANNA!" I could feel my shoulders being shook
When I fully opened my eyes, I was frightened. " Ashton?" I inched away from him
" It was just a nightmare, do you want to tell me what it was about? It sounded pretty serious. I'm used to you sometimes screaming stuff like 'PLEASE STOP' 'DON'T DO THIS' or something like that but you never mentioned my name before.." He sounded.. hurt
" Are you tired of dealing with me?" I was on the verge of tears
" Of course not!" He held my hands
" Would you.. ever hit me?" I hesitated to ask
" NO. Oh my god I'm so sorry Anna!" He pulled me in for a hug, a tight one, a loving one
I hugged him back. I'm so glad I have Ashton with me, through all of this. He's helped me so much. I remember everything he's done for me. He's the one that gave me a better life..
*flashback*
I walked into school, my head hung low. Today was not the best day...
Dad had just hit me in the jaw after I forgot to do the dishes. Just last night he had given me a swollen eye and a busted lip. People do mad things when they're drunk, even when they're sober, they're still doing crazy things.
I only really had a couple of friends. Destiny, she's my absolute best friend. Maddie is a good friend of mine and Brittany seems too perky to be my friend but I guess I should give her a chance.
And then there's Ashton Irwin. He's one of my.. I guess you could say friends. He's a year ahead of me but we see each other in some classes considering we have some mixed grade classes.
Whenever he passed me by in the hall, he would shoot me a concerned glance before carrying on.
The next few days had only gotten worse. I looked horrible. I looked like I hadn't slept in 3 weeks, I had some bruises on me from last night's beating and I happened to have an anxiety attack last night.
I have been getting them lately but I never really knew what they meant so I just shook them off.
I had walked into school with no choice but to expose my bruises. Some students just glared and didn't say anything and other's whispered amongst themselves.
The whole day has been horrible. It was finally lunchtime and I bought my lunch and then went and sat down against my locker. I wasn't gonna go to the dunny because the group of hoes usually go there during lunch to fix their makeup or gossip.
I was eating amongst myself when I felt someone slide down next to me. I set my lunch tray down and turned my head to see who it was. I was surprised, it was Ashton.
" Ashton?" I asked " Why aren't you with your friends in there?"
" I don't know, I saw you walk out so I followed you and here I am." He smiled
" Okay." Was my response
" Are you okay, what's going on?" He asked, concern in his voice
" I.. fell and hit my.. dresser with my jaw." I stammered, coming up with it as I said it
" Anna, no you didn't." He looked at me
" Fine, but.. I don't want to tell you." I spoke truthfully
" Come on, you can trust me.." He placed his hand on my shoulder
" Can I? You won't tell anyone at all?" I asked
" Of course, I won't tell anyone. But if I know what's going on I can help, or try to at least." He said, a half smile on his face
" Okay.." I paused before carrying on " My dad beats me and my mom just sits there and lets it happen and he's always drunk and.." I bursted into tears before I could finish
He wrapped his arm around my shoulder and pulled me closer to him. " It's okay, I'm gonna help you. No one deserves to live like that." He said soothingly
" Thanks Ash, you're a really good friend." I wiped my tears away
" Thanks, and I'm gonna find away to help you!" He said standing up
I stood up next to him
" How are you gonna help?" I asked, confused
" One, I'm gonna be there for you when you need me and two, I'm gonna find a way to get you out of your house, for good." He smiled and I couldn't help but smile back
*end of flashback*
Ashton was probably the most sweetest guy out there. He talked to his mom about me and they called authorities for child abuse and my dad was arrested. I don't know if he ever came out or is still rotting in there, I'm just glad he's out of my life forever.
As for my mom, there was no charges pressed against her. Yes, she would get drunk and lash out at me but she never hit me hard. It used to be an occasional slap or punch or kick but that would be it so I didn't complain about that.
The authorities still thought living with her was a bad environment so they took me to a foster home. Of course, I was only there for one day before Ashton and his mom came charging in.
And that's how I became an Irwin.
Ever since that, Ashton worries about me everyday. I don't see why though.. Yes, I have nightmares but I haven't had an anxiety or panic attack since 2 years ago when I was adopted.
I guess he's just protective.
And I'm thankful for that. I'm thankful for him loving me, and caring way too much about me. I am so thankful to be an Irwin. To be part of this great family.
I'm thankful for everything I have..
And everything is exactly how I want it to be.

Luke still doesn't know yet, just in her nightmare she had told him.
