The Phone Call

RYAN'S POV

I was woken up by the sound of my cell phone ringing. I picked it up and groaned when I saw who was calling. MacKenzie. I silently got out of bed and crept out of the room. I almost stood on Kayla, who was sleeping on the floor. I felt guilty because she insisted that I sleep in her bed until I got better. As I walked downstairs, I read the bajillion text messages MacKenzie sent me. It was hard for me to walk, because my legs were hurting so much. When I finally sat on the couch, the pain went away. I answered the call.

"What do you want, Mackenzie?" I asked.

"I want you to take me back!" She demanded in a harsh voice. It sounded like she had been crying.

"No." I said simply.

"Ryan you said that you loved me."

"Yeah I did. Until I saw you kissing another guy!" It was silent for a moment.

"W-we weren't actually kissing! I was bit on the mouth by a snake and he was sucking out the venom! He saved my life!"

"MacKenzie, I'm not an idiot. But I would be if I even thought about taking you back." Woah. I didn't plan on saying that. It just came out. I heard MacKenzie start to sob quietly.

"Ryan you can't mean that."

"I do." I thought that she was going to burst into tears, but instead she screamed at me.

"RYAN MATTHEWS YOU GET YOUR BUTT OVER TO MY HOUSE RIGHT NOW!" She demanded.

"This is another reason why I'm not getting back together with you. You're always so demanding."

"Ryan-"

"Goodbye MacKenzie." I hung up and turned my phone off. Why couldn't she just forget about it? We broke up like, a month ago. But no, she still wasn't over it. I sighed.

"Ryan?" I heard a soft voice ask. I turned around and saw Kayla standing at the bottom of the stairs. "I could hear you from upstairs. Is everything ok?" She came and sat down beside me.

"See for yourself." I handed her my phone so she could read the conversations between MacKenzie and I. When I gave her the phone, she looked like she wasn't sure wether she should take it or not. When she took it from my hands, she stared at it with a confused look on her face, like the text conversation was a puzzle she was trying to figure out.

"Kayla?" I asked after a couple minutes. She looked up at me.

"Um, sorry."

"Did you read it?" She didn't reply for a couple seconds.

"No. It's just that... I'm dyslexic so I couldn't really read it." Dyslexic? Was that all? She was acting like she had some big killer disease and she only had a week to live.

"Oh. I understand. My uh, brother, was dyslexic..." I tried to make her feel better. I could tell that she really didn't like having dyslexia.

"Cool. Anyway, what happened between you and MacKenzie?" I told her about the phone call. But soon I found myself blabbing about everything else MacKenzie did. But Kayla listened like she understood what I was going through.

"You can't just keep on talking to her. Delete her from your contacts. Don't text her again. Delete all her messages. If she phones you, ignore it."

"And you're sure that it'll work?"

"Well, it worked for me after I-" she stopped herself. I could tell that she didn't want to talk about whatever she was going to say. "So, what did she say when you caught her kissing someone else?"

"She said that she was bit on the mouth by a snake and he was sucking out the venom." That was such a stupid excuse.

"Weird. That's the same excuse that my boyfriend used when I caught him cheating on me. I can't believe that I ever liked him." Then she started talking about her ex and how he always told her that he loved her and only her, blah blah blah. By the end of her story, her eyes were filled with tears. I put my arms out and she hugged me.

"I just don't understand." She sobbed. "I loved Mike." I patted her back.

"You can't trust everyone." Just a couple seconds later, Greg, Jay and Zack walked through the front door. I motioned for them to leave, but the just started making kissy faces. I gave them a you-have-five-seconds-to-leave-or-I'm-going-to-kill-you look and they got the message and left. Luckily, Kayla didn't notice that they had even come in, she was too busy crying.

"Look," I said and pulled her away. "You need to forget about this guy. Remember your own advice. And any guy who would cheat on a girl as sweet as you, is 100% idiot." I don't even know why I said that last part. It was what I was thinking. Kayla sighed and stopped crying.

"You're right. Thanks Ryan." She smiled a bit and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek. I sat there, stunned, as she got off the couch and walked back upstairs. As soon as Kayla disappeared, my friends burst through the doors.

"We saw that! Kayla loves you!" Greg said. I rolled my eyes and tried not to blush, even though I probably was redder than a tomato.

"No she doesn't!" I protested, even though I wish she did.

"Dude, she kissed you." Jay said, trying not to laugh.

"It wasn't a real kiss. Just on the cheek." I would've done anything for Kayla to kiss me so I could brag to everyone else, but right now I just felt embarrassed. But what happened next was just weird. Greg grabbed Jay by the head and gave him a kiss on the cheek. Jay yelled and kneed Greg in the place where you do not, I repeat do NOT, want to be kneed.

"What the hell was that for?!" Jay yelled and wiped his cheek.

"It wasn't a real kiss. Just on the cheek." Greg said, imitating me.

"Dude, that's just... Wrong."

"Now it's a real kiss just cause I'm a guy." Greg said and fell to his knees, holding his crotch in pain. "That hurt." He mumbled. I ran my fingers through my hair. I couldn't help but think that Kayla liked me.

KAYLA'S POV

"ASHLEY ASHLEY ASHLEY WAKE UP I HAVE TO TELL YOU SOMETHING!" I yelled and shook Ashley's shoulders. She sat up and looked worried.

"What the hell, Kayla, I was sleeping."

"I have news about the guys!"

"Dreaming about Jay? What?! You're crazy. You're the one dreaming." She said.

"I wasn't talking about Jay." She smiled and sighed.

"R-right. I knew that."

"Anyway, so I heard Ryan- wait. You were having dreams about Jay?" I smirked and raised an eyebrow. Ashley blushed.

"No. So, what about Ryan?" I bit my lip.

"Um, I heard Ryan talking on the phone and he sounded really angry so I went to see if he was ok. Turns out, his ex girlfriend was calling and was asking him to take her back." I told her the story up until I started crying.

"Aw. He comforted you?"

"Yeah. But he said that I was sweet, and I just felt happy and I kissed him!" Her eyes widened.

"Woah. You kissed him?!"

"On the cheek."

"But still. That's cute!" My face started to heat up.

"I'm not sure if I like him or not." It was true. I thought that I liked him, but I still couldn't tell.

"KAYLA AND RYAN SITTING IN A TREE K-I-S-S-I-N-G!" Ashley sang and got out of bed. I tackled her to the ground, and we landed at the feet of Ryan and Jay.

"Hey..." I said, casually (note sarcasm). Ryan smiled and we locked eyes.

"Kayla! Off!" Ashley yelled. I rolled off of her back and helped her stand up. Ashley stomped over to Jay and dragged him downstairs.

"I'm sorry that you have to deal with all this drama." I said. Ryan smirked.

"Thanks." We started to walk downstairs, but I stopped. I pointed towards the living room, where I saw Jay and Ashley making out. I looked at Ryan and he sighed.

"Why do you always freak out when you see people kissing?" He whispered.

"Because I'm a girl and girls like that stuff." I whispered back.

"Well girls are weird." I elbowed his stomach and we walked back upstairs. I didn't want to interrupt their kiss again. I walked into my bedroom, and realized that Ryan was following me.

"Why are you following me?" I asked.

"Where else am I supposed to go? I can't go downstairs." I sat down on my bed.

"I don't know. Why don't you go... Find Nemo or something?" God, why did I sound like such a weirdo? Nemo? Really Kayla?! Ryan laughed and sat beside me.

"Wow. You're being random today." I shrugged.

"I don't know. I just don't want to interrupt Ashley and Jay's kiss. Again." Ryan rolled his eyes. My heart started to pound when I felt his arm wrap loosely around my waist. I continued to look forward until I felt his hip rub against mine. I looked in his chocolate coloured eyes. I never .realized how handsome he was until now. I curse my brain for what I did next. I leaned in and kissed him. On the lips! He cupped my cheek with one hand and the other on my back. His lips seemed to fit mine perfectly. My inner twelve year old girl was tempting me to pull away and start squealing, jumping up and down and going crazy. But the mature part of me kept me calm. At that moment, I realized that I liked Ryan.
