Hannah.
My alarm was shrinking in my ear annoyingly, making me groan and throw my blankets farther over me to try and drown out the sound. It was a feeble attempt but it was better than nothing. I fluttered my eyes open under the dark blankets and tried to adjust my sight. Ugh, I fucking hate alarms. I rubbed my face, trying to wake it up quicker and grunted as I finally threw all the blankets off me. The first day of the last day of my life. I switched up the original saying and rolled out of bed, my feet hitting the floor with a light thud. I trudged to my bathroom, unbraided my hair and sprayed it with some Aussie hairspray and went on to my makeup.
I finished and had enough time to leisurely pick out what I was going to wear today. "First impressions are everything." Ann had told me once, after I confessed to my nerves about moving and finishing at a new school. I was constantly thinking about her and wishing she cold live here with me, I wouldn't mind sharing a room with her and getting to go to school with her everyday. Then, things might feel a little better, a little less jumpy.
Anyways, I ended up picking out some washed out, holey skinnies and a loose fitted, off the shoulder black shirt with a galaxy peace sign on the front, and my black Toms. I swooped up my backpack from the floor and came downstairs to no one being in the kitchen. Did they leave me? I snapped my head back and forth, still seeing no one. I looked at the clock on the oven and it read, 8:15. Oh God, am I late?! But school doesn't start till 9:15! I pulled out a chair at the table and put my backpack down on the table. My stomach growled so while I was contemplating my confusion I got up to make myself some cereal.
On the fridge, hung a note with my grandmother's scribbled handwriting on the front. I pulled it off and continued to get the milk out. As I was pouring my milk into my happy, full bowl of Peanut Butter Captain Crunch, I read the note.
Hannah, have a good day at school, we'll see you when you get home. Don't get into fights, don't be afraid to ask for directions, and try making some friends. I know this is hard for you, but it could be a fun experience. I love you and I left for work this morning at 7:00 sharp. Jeanette's school starts at 8:00 so I had grandpa take her after I left. Your grandtather is out doing errands for me today in the other car, and I have the van. Your ride should be outside at exactly 8:40, don't be late. HAVE A GOOD DAY! LUNCH MONEY IS TAPED TO THE BACK OF THIS! xoxo- your hip hot grandma.
I smiled at her signature and flipped over the note, sure enough, there was ten bucks taped to the back. I put the milk away and slid the ten in my pocket. I ate silently at the table and now my mind was filled with ideas on who my grandmother could already know that would be giving me a ride to school. I seriously knew no one around here, so what's going on?
I looked at the clock when I finished wolfing down my bowl and put it in the sink. The clock read in green lights, 8:35. I sighed and thought I better get out there for my ride early, first impressions are everything. I grabbed my backpack and when I went outside I locked the door behind me with the house key that was left in the lock for me and set the alarm.
Going down to the end of the driveway, I saw my car.. My car! I beamed and ran over to it, I reached under to feel the top of my front tire, where I used to usually hide my key, and sure enough it was there. A note was attached and as I unlocked the door and was throwing my backpack in I was reading it.
Hannah Banana! You found out who your ride is? It's Matty! We wanted to surprise you and have it out here for you, so maybe listening to some of your screaming music on the way to school might make you a little happier. Let us know if anything got damaged on the ride here, we'll sue! Just joking, but we'll get it fixed. We love you, have a good day, again. -Grandma, Grandpa, Jeanette.
I was jittery and all excited to start up my car again. "Oh Matty, how I've missed you." I purred to my car and I started it up and rubbed the steering wheel lovingly. I named my car Matty after Matty Mullins because my car's orange- red like a ginger and all my detail work is black, and I got this cool three D sticker that goes on the front by my lights and it's a pair of black shades, like Matty wears. I grinned when the car came to life and I plugged up my iPod.
"I can save you, if you ask me, just ask me to!" Sleeping With Sirens filled my car and I grinned from ear to ear. Yes! I pulled out of the driveway and easily got to school in time. I got there at exactly nine and parked in the first one I saw. I got some weird stares from others when I pulled in with my music blaring and me singing at the top of my lungs and head banging in the front seat.
"Piss off." I murmured to myself when I got out and turned my iPod off and stuffed it in my glove box. I wished I had enough courage to say something like that to those people. I sighed and collected my pride, knowing probably by the end of the day it'd be somewhat tarnished, and got out.
People had now resumed to their clicks and conversations amongst one another and I was able to weave through people with ease and without notice. Please let it be this easy all day. I pleaded to whatever higher being existed up there. Going into the school was crowded and cool, I went into the office, like instructed the other day, and got my locker number, lock, and combination. I thanked the basically blind lady and took my things down the hall to number 123C.
I opened the little green locker and laid the lock in it and put the combination in my pocket. I started taking out things I wouldn't need for the first three periods and when I was satisfied with how it all was stacked, I took out the lock and closed my locker, trying it out and seeing if I could remember my combination. Twenty-six, fifty- four, zero, six, easy enough. I locked it up and turned with my schedule in hand, set on trying to find my first class, when I rammed into a hard object.
"Ow! Fuck!" I grumbled loudly as I fell hard onto the floor, my ass throbbed as I held for dear life onto the small piece of paper that was my knowledge of the school. I felt stupid when my face heated up with embarrassment and I used everything in me to actually look up at what I'd run into. Sure enough, to my luck, it was a person. Fuck my life. I thought grimly as I tried to rid my blush. "Sorry." I managed to say, trying to get up before I fell back down when I hand shot down to help me up.
"Nope, it's my bad. I was trying to run to my locker real quick before homeroom. I can't help when my lanky body part decide to get a mind of their own and hurt others. I'm surprised I'm not sued yet." He started rambling and so I took that time to look at him. He was tall, that's for sure, he had long, curling right above his eyebrows black hair, and looked like he was tattoo less. He was thin and gangly, and kind of awkward looking. His caramel brown eyes were soft and friendly though and I was instantly hypnotized by them.
"Sorry, I'm rambling again huh?" He rubbed the back of his neck nervously and I nodded, no longer embarrassed, but shy. "Oops." He sniggered and I smiled back politely. "I'm Austin anyway." He shot out his hand when I was standing and clutching my schedule to my chest.
"Hannah." I choked out, my anxiety starting up. I took a deep breath and tried to calm down enough for me to finish this conversation and walk away. We shook hands and we just stood there, quiet and awkward, like I knew would happen, and I side stepped away from him. "I should try and find my homeroom now.. Since that's not first period." I mumbled as an excuse to get away, kind of. He smiled as me and started following along beside me. Are you serious right now?!
"You're new? Well I can help!" His scratchy warm voice boomed above me and I feebly handed him my schedule.
"Sure, be my guest." I sighed, not even caring anymore.
"Mrs. Candi, she's upstairs, I'll show you her.. And then first period is to the left of her room, literally right next door."
"Sounds lucky so far to me. But how do you know that?"
"Because we have the same first period." He gleamed his white teeth at me and I flushed again. God dammit Hannah! Stop being a puss, you can't blush at every person who talks to you!
"Ah, gottcha."
We walked up the stairs in silence, this time it was much more comfortable than before though. I basically followed him around like a lost puppy, and I was so thankful when we got to my homeroom. "Whelp, there ya go. I guess I'll see you next period." He handed me back my paper and opened the door for me.
"Thanks." I nodded and he reciprocated just as friendly.
----------- IN HOMEROOM -------------
My homeroom just had to be this one.. I thought glumly when I showed the teacher my new student status and she pointed to a chair in the third row, closest to the window. There were tons of kids sitting on desks, screaming across the room at one another, and some couples being all touchy in class. It was pitiful, but this reminded me of a classroom scene in the movie, Mean Girls.
I took my seat and when the bell rang. Wait, I wasn't late? I smiled incredulously at that and reminded myself to thank Austin for that later. The teacher, Mrs. Candi stood at the head of the class and quieted everyone down for the Pledge and then to take roll.
"Your name back there? Ma'am?" She waved her pencil up and it took a minute for me to understand she was talking to me.
"Oh it's, Sam. People call me Sam." I clarified when she gave me a strange look. She marked my name on the roll and I looked back out the window when quiet snickering started up from other students around me. Really? How old are we people?
