Today is the day of my 16th birthday, and as a werewolf that means I will finally be able to shift, I will meet my wolf for the first time and I will meet my mate, hopefully. Not everyone finds their mate straight away. My first shift will take place tonight when the moon reaches its apex. I've been told it hurts a lot the first shift, because every bone in your body has to break, at least I will have my brother by my side.
A knock on my door around late afternoon disturbs my reading,
"come in" I say, it's Aidan.
"Hey, what's up?" I ask, he looks upset but excited at the same time. Aidan sits down on the bed beside me,
"hey so I just got off the phone with Kelsey and she's gone into labour."
"Oh my gosh congratulations" he smiles to himself and I hug him, "thanks, but you know what that means-"
"You're going to miss me shift"
"Yeah, I'm sorry I want to stay but-"
"I understand, go, go be with your mate"
"Thanks. You really remind me of mum sometimes you know. I'm sorry I'll miss your first shift, I'll see you soon, and the next time I see you I'm gonna be a father" he cheers, hugs me, kisses my forehead and hastily exits my room. Not long after I begin to prepare for the shifting ceremony. It's mandatory that I wear white. I slip on a long white, long sleeved, v - necked lace dress and put a white flower crown on my head. I head down stairs barefoot. Caleb meets me at the bottom of the stairs and links his arm with mine.
"Does it hurt?" I whisper to him as we walk through the parting crowd of werewolves.
"Do you want me to lie and say it tickles or-"
"Nope, that'll do" We reach the clearing and Caleb gives a speech,
"today, one of our pack members is turning 16, and you know what that means, today she will shift for the first time and possibly find her mate. Cora here will shift any minute now and we all wish her the very best. Try and keep it in your pants all you unmated males" he nods and smiles at me while the crowd of people cheer. The moon shines brightly above my head, an adrenaline hits me, then it begins, the searing pain of bones breaking, first it is my legs, then arms and back, my canine teeth elongate and my nails extend as my eyes dilute and become black, my dress tears as I shift into a large hazel coloured wolf with green eyes. Every other wolf that can shift, shifts and we go for a run. Caleb's wolf is brown and larger than mine due to the fact that he is an Alpha. He runs beside me, the pack runs with us. Being in wolf form is the best thing ever, I only wish that Aidan were here. The wind blowing through my fur and the soft dirt under my paws feels amazing. The relaxing feeling of freedom.
A raindrop hits my head, followed by another and another, soon it begins to rain. I run back to the pack house. I am about to shift back when I realize I forgot to bring a change of clothes. "Come on before it rains heavier" Caleb says already shifted and changed back into clothes. 'There might be a slight dilemma' I respond using the mind link,
"You forgot to bring a change of clothes didn't you" I don't respond.
"Here" he throws his shirt near a tree. I shift behind it and put the shirt on, the shirt goes to my mid thigh, it is dark blue and smells like him - cinnamon. 'Mate' a voice in my head says. 'Who said that?' I ask. 'I'm your wolf, Cara' she responds, 'and that is your mate. Mate, mate' she begins to chant over and over. 'Who Caleb?'
'Yes! The big, hunk of Alpha' I blush slightly at the thought. The rain gets heavier, "come on Cora" he says, "sorry, I'm just-, I just met my wolf"
"You met your wolf"
"Yeah and she told me who my mate is" He smiles to himself, he grabs my wrist and pulls me to him, sparks fly at his touch, my stomach fills with butterflies. The rain coats us like a blanket.
"I'm your mate" Caleb says,
"and I'm yours" I reply. Our faces are just inches apart. He leans down slowly and presses a soft kiss to my lips. My wolf is going crazy.
"Come on, let's go inside" he grabs my hand and we run inside out of the rain. I go upstairs to put some dry, clean clothes on, but silly me forgot to bring some sweaters. I put on a pair of jeans. Maybe Aidan left his suitcase here, I head to his room, nothing, he took it. I go back to my room and standing at my door is Caleb. He stares at me, smiles and rubs the back of his neck, I then realize that I'm standing in jeans and a bra. "Ah, hey Caleb" I say awkwardly, "I-I was just looking for a sweater"
"In Aidan's room?" Caleb questions. "Um-um-ah-I" Why am I so nervous.
"Do you need to borrow a jumper?"
"Yeah, if you don't mind"
"Of course not" I follow him to his room, I stand at the doorway awkwardly trying to cover my half naked chest.
"Come in, make yourself comfortable" he says jokingly. I enter his room, it smells heavily of his scent - cinnamon. I sit down on his bed and he throws me a hoodie, I put it on. He sits next to me staring at me lost in my eyes, and me lost in his, he cups my face, gently pressing his lips to mine, I kiss back, he plants kisses down my neck as he pulls the hoodie away so he can mark me. Realization hits him and he pulls away, "no I can't" he says.
"I know, yeah, you're right" I put a stray piece of hair behind my ear. He can't mark me, not yet at least, not this earlier. I'm only 16 and he's my brothers best friend, and my mate.
"I can't mark you, yet, you're only 16 and I think that's too young to be a Luna-"
"Woah, woah, woah, hold up Luna?"
"Yeah, when we mate you'll become the Luna and I think your too young to be a Luna, and one day I won't be able to stop myself from marking you so I think its best if you stay with your brother a little while longer" he rushes out.
"You're rejecting me?" I say close to tears already.
"No, of course not, I just think you should stay with your brother till your a bit older"
"You think I'm a child so you're rejecting me"
"I'm not rejecting you!"
"Well you pretty much are rejecting me just not in so many words!" The burning behind my eyes becomes unbearably and a tear escapes my eye. "No, no don't cry" he says rushing to me,
"I didn't mean to hurt you"
"Well too damn late, the damage has already been done" I stand up and leave his room. I quickly pack all my belongs back in my suitcase and storm out of the pack house, heading for home.
