Salara POV:

i don't know what the message said on Darien's phone but it was enough to distract him almost entirely. After leaving the club we had climbed into the car and before i had even gotten the door closed, Darien had already stepped on the gas, tires squealing against the slick roads.

i gripped onto the sides of the dashboard like my life depended on it. almost as hard as Darien was gripping the steering wheel. His knuckles completely white and his jaw tight and flexed.

Something was definitly wrong i just didn't know what and i knew better than to ask Darien anything about it, especially when his eyes were blazing with utter murder. The trip into the city to the club had taken a little over an hour, getting back, Darien had managed to do it in under 30 minutes.

talk about an urgent message

Dariens POV:

I've never been so worried about my sister in years, not since...he had stepped into eve's life. Just thinking about someone touching or even hurting my sister was enough to make me burn with anger.

I couldn't do anything to save my mother, because i was only a child, but damn if i was going to loose my sister now, when i had the means to protect her.

By the time we reached the mansion i realized i had forgotton to blindfold Salara, though i doubt she actually remembered the way, since i felt her eyes on me the whole time.

Just the feel of her presence so close to me was actually allowing me to think. but the closer i got to the mansion the more my thoughts kept drifting back to the problem at hand.

When i pulled up in front of the mansions wooden doors and cement pillars, I yanked on the handbrake, not caring that i left the car on, as i jumped out, my mind completely forgetting about Salara in the passenger seat. Tim met me half way, his walk also tense and stiff. A few guys followed, standing behind him with their weapons drawn.

"Where-?" Tim stopped me before i could even utter another letter. "she's in the basement." i nodded before moving past him, my path heading straight for the side of the house. "TIm get Salara inside and make sure she stays in the room." i called over my shoulder, not even looking back to see if anyone was listening to me.

A guard, opened the door for me, allowing me passage into the lower basement under the garage. I jogged down the stairs, grabbing hold of the large metal lock that held the one room down here sealed and slid it across, the metal grating against the supports. I pushed my way through the large steel door, my eyes searching for one person in particular.

A man was tied to a chair, his body slumping forward in it, but my eyes just passed over him, as if he hadn't even existed. At the moment he wasn't my concern. Evelyn was.

When i stepped inside i felt a flash of relief seeing Evelyn perched ontop of one of the large tables set up in the almost empty room, her legs tucked neatly beneath her. I completely ignored the other person in the room and instead motioned for evelyn to come with me. without a word she jumped off the table and followed me back through the door.

When the door had closed behind me, i grabbed a hold of her, my eyes automatically searching for any signs of blood, as i turned her face from side to side. Evelyn didn't even let me get that far before she pushed my hands away, her eyes soft. "Darien, I'm fine." she whispered. i gave a reluctant nodd, not satisfied with my inspection.

But knowing Eve, she would break my hand if i didn't listen to her. "What the hell happened then?" i sighed, feeling as if a weight had been lifted off of my shoulders.

"His names Shane Cristick. He was snooping around the premises" she said running a hand through her hair. "you called me here because some homeless punk was snooping around?" i couldn't help but glare, annoyance flaring up in me when i realized my night may have been ruined because someone had merely taken a wrong turn off the highway.

Evelyn scowled back. "Not just any homeless punk would be  carrying one of these." she muttered pulling out a small manila envelope.

I frowned, taking the envelop from her hand and flipping it over. My name was scrawled on its front in neat cursive, a hand i did not recognize. I opened up its flap and pulled out its contents. There in black and white were photos of Evelyn, my father and Salara doing daily things.

Their faces were circled with a bright red marker, almost like the target symbol. I didn't much care about my father, even i believed the world would have been a better place with out the insufferable prick, the only people who worried me were Salara and evelyn.

I flipped through the three photos trying to decipher anything that might have been helpful but when i came across the forth photo of the bunch, my hands automatically clenched into fists.

It was a picture of both evelyn and Salara together at the mall, similar circles drawn around their faces, but what made me tense was the person standing behind them, in the distance but still visible, his faces slightly out of focus from the pixels. My eyes automatically drifted to evelyn wondering if she had seen the same thing i had, fortunately she hadn't.

"flip the photo" Eve breathed motioning to the backside. I did as she said and the one line crossing the back of the photo made me grind my teeth.

"give me your gun." i barely managed to say without growling. Evelyn hesitated for a second before she pulled her gun from the small clip at her side.  "What are you going to do?" she asked watching as i passed her all the photos except the one with the two of them on its front.

"Exactly what you called me over here to do." i muttered, trying to hold back my anger enough so that i would be able to question the guy inside without straight out killing him.

but taking another look at that photo was seriously pushing my patience. I yanked the steel door open again, stepping halfway through when Evelyn said. "I'm going in there with y-" i stopped her, my anger written clearly across my face.

I didn't want her in there with me when i questioned this guy. i didn't want her to know what i knew now and most of all i didn't want her to remember what my father had made me into.

that i was no longer just Darien any more, that after all these years i had become a monster as well.

"No. you're staying here and that's final. This is about me, and what ever this is." i held up the photo at eye level, "Only i was meant to know. If Scorsazy wants me alone, then i'll give it to him."  with that i slipped through the rest of the way.

"Seal the door" i ordered, shooting her a commanding look, one that she knew very well not to disobey. Without waiting for an answer i pulled the door closed behind me with a loud bang, Sealing me and the messenger inside.

I took another look at the photo the words scrawled on its back already burned into the back of my mind. I walked over to the man slumped in the chair the gun in my hand, urging me to end this guys life for bringing the threat that was so evident in the photos to my very own doorstep.

"Shane i'm going to ask you a few questions. The way you answer them determines the state in which you leave this room. On your own two feet, or in a box. the choice is yours" i stated my voice cold and heartless, devoid of all emotion. i pulled over a chair, allowing its feet to drag across the cement floor harshly.

I placed merely a foot away from him before i sat myself down, my eyes trained on the guy infront of me. My guards who had caught him, had already roughed him up a little, dark bruises and small cuts were forming on his sullen face.

He was sweating profusely and his eyes kept darting from me back to the door, as if he were trying to command it to open with his mind.  "don't worry. we won't be disturbed" i assured, fixing my cool sight on him.

i leaned forward, lightly rested the tip of my gun against his shoulder. Shane flinched away from the foreboding weapon, his trembling moving up another knotch. "tell me something shane...do you have a family?"

For a full minute Shane didn't answer, all he did was close his eyes real tight. He gave me his answer. Loud and Clear.

"By your lack of an answer i'm going to say, yes you do." i whispered, before standing up out of my chair and moving over to the table Evelyn was perched on only moments before. " Do you believe that we become more protective when our families are put in danger? I do. Especially when someone threatens my family. So when i recieve things like this-" i wagged the photo in the air mockingly.

"you better pray that you aren't the one sending it." i glared, turning my attention to the instruements lining the table. I picked up a small cutter its tip shining in the poor lighting. A small whimper escaped the mans lips from behind me.

"You see shane, i'm a buisness man. A simple buisness man. But what i've learned over my career has taught me many things grown men would keel over to. Many things young children have nightmares about." i murmured, looking off into the distance.

"A most effective thing, is how to extract information. Obviously without killing the person i'm getting the information from. But i can't promise that the process won't be painful, especially if you lie to me.

"The first step. Incentive. Interrogations always go better when the person in question has a motivation to live. Yours is your family. I can assure you of one thing Shane, i'm not a monster like the people you work for. I don't go after peoples families.

"so feel better knowing that your family won't come to any harm. But if you make me Shane, i will involve them until i find out exactly what i need to know. do you understand?" i asked turning my body slightly so i could see his answer.

He raised his head, his eyes shining with defiance and what i can only describe as pain. "Go to hell Vasselli." he hissed. "my family was murdered by your father and his pets! There is nothing that you can do to me that can hurt me anymore than your father already has." he spat on the floor.

i nodded in understanding before holding up the cutters to his eye. its always the smallest things that hurt the  most. for example maybe a...finger. or a toe" i jestured.

"you just got to decided what you want to snip off first." i murmured. "Eenie. Meenie. Mini. Mo." i enunciated, the words playing over and over again in my head.  the same words inscribed on the back of the photo i was still holding.

Eenie Meenie Mini Mo
