Chapter Thirty One
“So what exactly do I have to do with the curse of the sun and the moon?” Elena asked.
They were sitting just around the back of the school, Elijah had wanted to go somewhere more private but Elena refused to go anywhere farther than this. She didn’t trust the well dressed man with the mysterious accent and she certainly wouldn’t let him take her somewhere isolated.
“It has everything to do with you, in fact it was created to make finding you easier.” Elijah said.
“That doesn’t make any sense, why would a curse that makes sun lethal to vampires and binds werewolves to the moon be created centuries ago because of me?” Elena asked, thanks to Mason she knew the basics of what the curse entailed.
Elijah chuckled like she had just told a joke, “it surprised even me how the werewolves and vampires immediately believed the legend. They actually believed that the reason for the sun burning vampires and the moon controlling the wolves was because of the Aztecs.”
“So that’s not the reason?”
“Of course not, the Aztecs didn’t even know about werewolves or vampires.” Elijah replied smirking slightly.
Elena narrowed her eyes, “can you stop talking like I’m supposed to know exactly what you are talking about and just tell me what I need to know already?”
“During the middle ages a witch was in danger of losing her family, they lived in a village full of natives that transformed into wolves every full moon. One morning after the full moon she discovered that while out of the safety of their home her youngest son had been killed by one of the beasts. This enraged her family and they wanted to avenge his death but the natives were stronger than they were. While trying to find a way to protect her family she came across a spell that would make them stronger, faster and deadlier than the natives as well as grant them immortality. Fueled by grief she performed the spell on her husband and children and used the blood of a woman two of her sons had been pursuing. Her name was Tatia, and was the first of the Petrova doppelgangers.
When the children awoke with their new powers they used it to take revenge on the natives who had killed their brother. This ignited a feud between the werewolves and vampires. However the next full moon the third eldest son named Niklaus went through the transformation that plagued the natives that they hadn’t yet killed. The curse was triggered after he took his first life and exposed what his mother had done. Before he had been born she had an affair with one of the villagers who had passed the werewolf gene to his son. In an effort to right this wrong she placed a curse on her son that made his werewolf side dormant. She performed this spell using what blood she had left from Tatia.
Enraged when he discovered her betrayal her husband first killed the villager that was Niklaus’s father and then moved on to kill his wife. However before he could move on to kill Niklaus he fled with his siblings. Once they were well hidden he began to try and discover a way to undo the spell his mother had cast. A witch told him and his siblings who stayed loyal to him that in order to break the curse, he needed a witch to perform the ceremony, the moonstone that was used to bind the curse, a werewolf to sacrifice, a vampire to sacrifice and then to drain the blood of the Petrova doppelganger to the point of her death. It would not be difficult to procure a witch, werewolf and a vampire but the moonstone had been lost as was Tatia’s bloodline.
It would take too long and be near impossible for them to find both by searching the world on their own so the eldest brother devised a plan. Together they created the sun and the moon as well as many other curses which they planted throughout the world. They stated that in order for werewolves to be able to transform freely and vampires to walk in the sun, the moonstone and Petrova doppelganger were needed.”
“That way you could have every member of two races looking for both of them.” Elena finished for him.
Elijah nodded, “that was their plan.”
“How do you know all of this.”
He hesitated a moment before answering, “Niklaus is my younger brother, Esther the witch who cast the spell to make us immortals was my mother. I am a member of the original family.”
Elena tried not to show her shock and fear. Standing in front of her was a vampire who was who knows how old. If he had been telling the truth he had been helping his brother who was half original vampire and half werewolf break the curse that involved draining every last drop of blood out of her body.
“I thought you said you were here to help me,” Elena said looking anywhere but into his eyes.
“I am, you see Niklaus has always been quite hot headed. Over the centuries every one of his siblings have fallen out of favour with him, the first was Finn. One day he was there and the next he was laying dead in a coffin, one by one he did the same to the rest of my family. I owe nothing to him anymore and I would rather see him get the same as our siblings then to help him break the curse. Even though he is now alone he still searches for what is needed to break the curse, it is only a matter of time before he discovers you here and once he does there is nothing you can do to stop him. If you do not believe me I suggest you ask Katerina.”
“How are you supposed to help me then? Thanks to you and your family all vampires and werewolves are searching for me, and if your brother is really as powerful as you say he is then what can you do to stop him?” Elena asked.
“I can offer to protect your loved ones, you have my word that if you assist me in my plan to end Niklaus’s life that no harm will come to those who are important to you.”
“If he is only after me then why should I be worried about my loved ones?” Elena asked hesitantly. If she was being honest with herself she was somewhat scared of what his answer might be.
“All I can tell you is that Niklaus will do whatever it takes to break the curse, he does not let morals guide him. If you need any further incentive to be worried for them I once again suggest you have a chat with Katerina, she has been where you have. Consider my deal, you have two days before I return.”
Without another word he disappeared leaving Elena there alone. She had never heard of someone called Katerina, but if what Elijah said was true and she had indeed already been through what Elena was about to there was only one person it could be. She wondered how Damon would react when she told him that she had to talk to Katherine.
“Who the hell is Elijah?” Damon asked Lexi.
“He’s someone that can help.” Lexi replied still with a smile painted on her face.
“Well I’m going to go find her.” Damon said when that was all Lexi said. There was no way in hell that he was just going to sit there while Elena was with this Elijah guy.
Before he could get farther than a couple steps Lexi grabbed his arm with her vicelike grip. She was older than him and therefore stronger but he wasn’t about to let her hold him back.
He snarled and tried to throw her off of him but she held on, “you can’t interrupt them Damon. She needs to know about Klaus.”
“First Elijah and now Klaus, who are these guys?”
Lexi shrugged, “all I know is that Elijah needs to help Elena protect herself from Klaus and that I need to keep you here.”
Damon looked into Lexi’s eyes and saw that her brown eyes had a glazed look in them. It was a look that he had seen many times before in the eyes of the humans he had compelled, “are you compelled Lexi? How is that possible?”
She was a vampire, vampires couldn’t compel other vampires. So who exactly was this Elijah and how was he able to get Lexi to do exactly what he said?
Before he could say anything else the sound of the door swinging open made everyone pause as they listened to the sound of approaching footsteps. Damon breathed a sigh of relief when he saw Elena walk in. She was wearing a hoodie and sweats probably over her cheerleading outfit and her hair was up in a high ponytail.
When Lexi saw her she immediately let go of Damon’s arm and he rushed to Elena.
“Are you okay Elena?” Damon asked, “we heard about Elijah.”
Elena looked at him with her brown eyes wide, “how do you know about Elijah?”
Damon turned and looked at Lexi who was once again sitting down now with a confused look on her face.
“You know Elijah Lex?” Elena asked.
Lexi looked at them and narrowed her eyes, “who is Elijah? What are you guys talking about?”
“Elijah? You know the one you told us was making a deal with Elena when we found out she was missing.” Damon said.
“You also said something about how he was here to protect Elena from some dude named Klaus.” Anna added.
Both Sadie and Jeremy nodded in agreement but Lexi just looked confused.
“Don’t you mean Niklaus?” Elena asked.
Anna shook her head, “no she definitely said Klaus.”
“I have absolutely no idea who Elijah and Klaus or Niklaus or whatever his name is is. How could I have been talking about them?”
They all shrugged and were silent for a moment.
“Okay this is all very strange but not why I came here.” Elena turned to Damon when she spoke this time, “I need to talk to Katherine.”
Now it was everyone’s turn to turn and stare at Elena. She had made it very clear that she didn’t like Katherine from the start and now she wanted to talk to her.
“I guess we could go down and talk to her once Pearl is done.” Damon said.
It didn’t take Pearl long to arrive in the room that was filled with everyone just sitting there in silence.
“Katherine is not saying anything even to me, I’m sorry I couldn’t be more help.” She looked over everyone sitting in the room quickly and her eyes lingered on Elena. “My daughter told me about you, she’s right you look exactly like Katherine.”
Elena nodded and smiled bitterly before turning to Damon, “can I talk to Katherine now?”
“Still not going to tell me what it is exactly that you need to talk to her about?” Damon asked.
When Elena shook her head Damon sighed, “I guess but only if I can come.”
Elena just shrugged and followed Damon as he led her to a set of rickety stairs that led into the cellar. It was cold and dark down there and the whole place gave Elena the chills. They had to walk past several thick steel doors with bars on them like it was a sort of prison before Damon stopped in front of one.
He opened the door and gestured for her to go in first. Laying in the middle of the cellar was Katherine. She had only ever seen her in pictures before but that had been enough for Elena to know that they looked exactly alike. The way Katherine looked now however reminded Elena of how she had looked two years ago when she had been in bed for a week with the flu.
Her skin was a waxy white and there was a thin shiny layer of sweat that coated it. Her long brown hair was tangled all around her head and every time her hest rose and fell Elena could hear her wheezing breathes.
“Why does she look like that?” Elena asked.
“We only give her small amounts of blood so she stays weak without vervain.” Damon explained.
“Can you get me some blood? It doesn’t have to be that much just enough to get her talking.”
Damon narrowed his eyes, “are you sure you should do that?”
Elena nodded, as soon as Damon left the cellar Katherine began to stir. She slowly lifted her head and looked at Elena with the same brown eyes Elena saw everyday in the mirror.
“This is a new tactic, did they really think you could get me to fess up to why I’m here? Let me guess they figured since the old best friend couldn’t do the trick the doppelganger would work?” Katherine said her voice scratchy.
“Actually I wanted to ask you about something else.” Elena said.
Katherine raised her eyebrows and looked at Elena waiting for her to continue.
“Earlier today Elijah came to make a deal with me,” Elena hesitated for a moment to see Katherine’s reaction but continued when Katherine just laid there, “he told me about Niklaus. He also said that you would know exactly why he was so dangerous.”
Katherine raised an eyebrow but didn’t say anything because at that moment Damon walked in with a blood bag. When he saw that Katherine was awake he glared at her while he handed the blood bag to Elena.
“He’s right, I know why you should be scared of Klaus, I know everything about the lengths at which he is willing to go to get what he wants. I also happen to know exactly what he wants.”
Elena looked at her expectantly but she just smiled.
“I know that blood is for me. Before I tell you anything I want it and I want him gone.” Katherine said shifting her eyes to Damon as she spoke.
“Not happening.” Damon replied.
“Then I guess you aren’t going to get the answer you are looking for Elena,” Katherine said coughing slightly as she closed her eyes again.
“Damon please, she can’t hurt me. Even with this blood she won’t be strong enough.” Elena pleaded. She had to know the truth about Niklaus or Klaus or whatever his name was, because if what Elijah said was true he was currently searching the planet for her right now.
When Damon looked at her his eyes were filled with worry and any other time she would have been touched but right now that worry was standing between her and finding out something important.
“What does she have to say that is so important?” Damon asked.
She didn’t know what stopped her from explaining everything Elijah told her right then and there. Maybe it was because it would take too long or because she needed some time to think about it on her own but whatever it was it kept her from coming clean.
“I’ll explain later but right now you just have to trust me.” Elena whispered cupping his cheek with her hand. She gazed into his pale blue eyes with her brown ones trying to make him see that what she needed was to talk to Katherine.
Hesitantly Damon nodded, only pausing to kiss her lightly he turned and walked out of the cellar leaving the door slightly ajar.
When Elena turned back to look at Katherine she was surprised to see that she had opened her eyes again and was looking at Elena with her eyes wide with curiousity.
“Tell me Elena, why did you choose Damon over Stefan?” Katherine asked her voice growing more hoarse with every word she spoke.
“There was never really much of a choice, I was already infatuated with Damon when I met Stefan.”
Katherine laughed quietly, “I’ve been in town a long time Elena. The minute you found out Stefan loved you enough to break Damon and you up you made your choice. You chose to stay with Damon instead of going to his younger brother.”
Elena didn’t respond instead she sat on the floor and slid the blood bag Damon had given her across the cold floor so it stopped right by Katherine’s head.
Her movements with slow and it looked like every single one sent pain shooting throughout her body. She grasped the blood bag like it was a life preserver and she was drowning. It took her less than a couple seconds to empty the bag into her mouth and she didn’t spill a single drop. Once she threw the bag aside and licked her lips Elena decided to speak.
“I didn’t come down here to talk about Stefan or Damon.”
“Yes yes, you came here to talk about Klaus, I heard you the first time.”
The blood had done its job. Katherine’s voice was as clear as Elena’s, her skin had regained its colour and she was able to sit up without looking like she was going to collapse. She still looked rather sick but at least now it wasn’t as if she was on the brink of death.
There was a short stretch of silence as Elena waited for Katherine to start talking.
“I guess my story starts in Bulgaria, the year was 1490. My family disowned me after I disgraced them by having a child out of wedlock, imagine the shame. After that I made my home in England and had to quickly become English. It was there that I caught the attention of Lord Klaus.”
