Unlike other classes, the room we step into next is light and filled of buzzing energy, people were chatting to their friends and looking curiously at the mysterious creatures placed around the room, this is our last lesson; Defence against the dark arts. Most of the day past in a blur of new lessons and teachers, between the three of us we managed not to get lost again and arrived to classes on time. We slide into three worn wooden seats at the back of the room and place our now filled bags onto the cold stone floor. Professor Knightly looks around the room, smiles and says softly
"I think that's everyone here now."
Sitting at the back of the room is helpful, here I have a good view of the rest of the class, how they sit, what they are like. I notice how Hannah sits up strait with her hair covering most of her pale face, her shy personality obvious from the start. My eyes slowly scan the room of students looking for anyone interesting; we share this lesson with the Gryffindors which isn't too bad I guess. As I reach the far forward corner of the class I notice one Gryffindor girl sat leant back on her chair, rocking slightly on it with her arms crossed and a discreet smirk on her face. Lucas pokes me out of my day dream just as my name is called on the register
"Here sir." I say in a monotone voice
Silence fills the room as the last person announces themselves present and sir slips the parchment into his desk draw
"Welcome to your first D.A.D.A Lesson!" He says enthusiastically
"As many of you already know this class is a mandatory subject taught here, in which you will learn how to defend yourself against dark arts and dark creatures." He continues "This class is mandatory until your 5th year if you choose to take it for your N.E.W.T's, however back to the here and now today will be a practical lesson so books away and wands out!"
And excited murmur fills the room, a practical in our first lesson!
With a swish of his wand Professor Knightly sends all of the tables flying off to the side of the room with a gentle "thud"
"I will be putting you in partners" He says in an apologetic voice, I don't mind that much; It's nice to meet new people anyway
He pairs us up mixing Gryffindors and Ravenclaws , Boys and Girls, I could end up with anyone in the whole entire room but no, it had to be her.
"Sky Hartlli, you can go with...Naomi Harticks."
He says then moves onto the next pair, I look up and see the smirking girl from earlier,she has dark hair like me but it's shorter. Her eyes are a misty blue grey we are around the same height but she seems sort of intimidating. I shrug and walk over, first impressions aren't always right she could be really nice, I just get the feeling she already hates me..
Once we are all in pairs sir explains what we will be doing
"Right! Today I shall be teaching you the disarming charm "Expelliarmus", this charm forces your opponent to drop whatever they are holding, in most cases a wand. You used to learn this in your second year but I think you're all more than capable."
It took a good part of the lesson for us to learn the wand movements and to get the right pronunciation, although soon we were told to start practicing with our partners
"I'll go first then?" Asks Naomi, it's the first time I've heard her speak. I wouldn't put her down as a shy person, just quiet. Her voice is very bored sounding as she looks directly at me.
"I suppose..." I say as I pull out my wand and look at her, as she does the same. The smirk has grown as she looks at me and says quickly and flawlessly.
"Expelliarmus!" I feel the wand jump from my hand but I manage to grab it before it flies off.
I grin triumphantly as I look at her watching her reaction, I sense she's shocked but her smirk stays fixed in place, determined not to let me know she's annoyed, I see through it.
"Your turn." She says, I wonder how much she's betting herself I'll mess up. She looks at me like I'm a trend and she's so over it.
I smile at her, and lift my wand to the right height and say strongly
"Expelliarmus!" Her wand goes flying across the room and whacks Lucas on the back of the head then falls to the floor with a clatter. I grin and smile at her, she smiles back sarcastically then walks over to pick up her wand.
Sky: 1 Naomi: 0
She rolls her eyes at me and walks off.
But for some reason, I got the feeling this wouldn't end here. I had just showed her up and I'd bet my Firebolt she's already planning to get me back
---Later that evening---
"You should go for it!" Lucas encourages me as I just can't decide
"I might make a fool of myself..." I say doubtfully looking at him
Just then, Hannah wonders in from the girl's staircase after feeding her kitten from our dormitory
"What's this about?" She asks quietly looking between Lucas and I
I sigh and look at her
"Luc is trying to convince me try out for the Ravenclaw quidditch team, they never used to allow 1st years but now they've changed the rules" I explain to her
"I didn't know you played, what position?" She asks, taking a seat next to us
"Seeker or chaser" I tell her "So what do you think?"
She looks at me carefully "Personally, I think you should go for it, your small and light so you'd make a good seeker, there's no harm in trying Sky." She says, more talkative than usual, maybe it was just home sickness to begin with, It's nice to hear her talk more
Hesitantly I stand up
"Okay okay! I'll give it a go but you're not coming to watch me make a fool out of myself!"
"Darn it! I brought popcorn and everything!" says Luc jokingly
"What's popcorn?..." I ask confused
"Oh It's a muggle food, You eat it when you're watching something entertaining" he says smiling at me
"Gee thanks for the vote of confidence!" I say poking him hard on the arm
"Ow!" He yelps, and raises a finger to poke me back
"Guys!" Yells Hannah, I look at her; shocked.
"Sky, you really need to go to tryouts or you won't get a go!"
Then she looks at Lucas sternly
"And you're not allowed to hit girls."
Lucas smirks at her teasingly "Actually it was a poke.."
She just rolls her eyes and looks at me
"You, off to the quidditch pitch before your too late!"
I smile and hug her quickly
"Thanks Hannah, See you later jerk face"
Lucas looks at me "That's not a nice thing to say about Hannah!"
I resist the urdge to roll my eyes at him
"I was talking to you." I say before skipping out of the portrait hole and down to the quidditch pitch.
A few minutes later after asking directions from a Hufflepuff I arrive at the Quidditch pitch along with some people scattered around with their brooms at their sides.
"Excuse me?" I ask a tall 6th year girl
She turns and smiles at me
"Are you here for the try outs?" She asks, studying me carefully
I nod
"I'm Emily; one of the Ravenclaw chasers and team captain. What position are you aiming for?"
"Seeker really, but I'm not a bad chaser..." I reply
Her eyes narrow and she walks around me, I feel like a small animal about to be attacked by a bird of prey
She smiles and looks at me
"You've got good seekers build; we've already seen the rest of our seekers so show us what you've got!"
I nod eagerly as she explains the plan
"Pretty much, I'll be trying to stop you from getting the snitch, and you have to get it. Don't worry I won't be too harsh on you"
I nod and climb onto my Firebolt and nervously hover just off of the ground
Emily leans over the quidditch ball case and takes the golden snitch in her hand
"You ready?" She says looking at me then continues "3...2...1..."
The snitch goes whizzing off into the dusky sky and I zoom off after it with Emily close on my tail
----Lucas' Point Of View ----------
I sit in the common room as the evening slowly passes and empties of people as they go off to bed until there's just a few of people left Including Hannah and I.
I learn she's very good at wizard's chess as I just lost spectacularly and now my pieces are refusing to speak to me or listen to my instructions; I reckon I need some practice.
Suddenly the portrait hole creaks open and a very battered Sky Hartlli walks in, her long brown hair wind swiped and her eyes tired looking, covered in mud but a with huge grin spread across her face
"How did it go?" Asks Hannah, running over to her
"Great!" She replies grinning at us, her eyes bright and sparkling
"I got on the team!" She continues excitedly, I love it when she's smiley it's such an infectious smile. It's almost easy to forget the incident yesterday in the great hall, but something still nags in the back of my mind, should I tell her what happened? Or maybe ask Hannah what I should do? The only thing I'm definite on is I couldn't live with myself if Sky ended up hurt.
