Chapter 35: Black Panther
Karina's perspective: ⚕

As we clashed with our assailants, I found myself struggling to keep up, my movements clumsy and uncoordinated. But Danielle was there, fighting by my side, her presence a reassuring anchor in the chaos. Haerin was a whirlwind of motion, dispatching attackers with precision and skill, while Minji seemed to possess an otherworldly strength, effortlessly fending off anyone who dared to challenge her.

But despite our best efforts, the sheer number of adversaries threatened to overwhelm us. "There's too many!" Hanni's panicked voice cut through the din of battle, sending a chill down my spine.

In the midst of the chaos, a sudden blow from behind sent Hanni crashing to the ground. "Hanni!" My cry was raw with fear and desperation, echoing through the night.

Time seemed to slow as Hanni lay motionless on the forest floor, her breaths coming in ragged gasps. For a moment, the world held its breath, every eye fixed on her prone form.

Then, with a shudder, Hanni began to convulse, her body contorting in unnatural ways. My heart pounded in my chest as I watched in horror, unable to tear my eyes away from the scene unfolding before me.

And then, with a guttural growl that seemed to reverberate through the very air itself, Hanni's transformation began. Her limbs twisted and elongated, sinewy muscles rippling beneath her skin as she grew larger and more powerful.

In the blink of an eye, she stood before us, no longer the fragile girl we had known but a majestic beast, her sleek fur glistening in the moonlight. Her eyes, once warm brown, now burned with an electric green fire, sending shivers down my spine.

I gasped in astonishment, unable to comprehend the sight before me. Hanni had transformed into a magnificent panther, her form exuding power and grace in equal measure.

Breathing heavily, the panther regarded us with a mixture of curiosity and determination, her gaze sweeping over our group with a newfound intensity. In that moment, she was more than just our friend; she was a force of nature, a guardian watching over us in our darkest hour.

As the guards approached, their footsteps growing louder with each passing moment, panic threatened to consume me. Hanni's transformation into a panther, coupled with Winter's disappearance, left me feeling utterly helpless, a sinking feeling of despair gnawing at my insides.

But just as I resigned myself to my fate, a warning cry pierced through the chaos. "Watch out!" The words snapped me out of my daze, adrenaline coursing through my veins as I reacted instinctively.

In a split second, I found myself catching an outstretched arm with surprising speed, my senses heightened by the urgency of the situation. With a swift motion, I delivered a well-aimed kick to the assailant's knee, sending him crashing to the ground in a heap.

Before I could fully comprehend what had just transpired, a bolt of lilac energy streaked past me, striking the fallen guard with pinpoint accuracy. Haerin's timely intervention left me feeling a surge of relief, dispelling the overwhelming sense of dread that had threatened to engulf me.

In the heart of the wilderness, Hanni emerged like a force of nature, akin to a predatory panther unleashed from its confines. Her presence was formidable, a relentless onslaught upon all who dared to cross her path. Despite the overwhelming odds against us, we refused to yield, standing resolute in defiance of the impending danger.

With each strike and parry, the intensity of the conflict escalated, the chaos of battle engulfing us in its tumultuous embrace. Yet, fueled by an indomitable spirit, we held fast, a cohesive unit against the encroaching menace.

Time seemed to warp as the skirmish wore on, the cacophony of clashing weapons reverberating throughout the dense foliage. But amidst the chaos, our determination remained unshaken, our collective will unbroken by the relentless assault.

And then, in a sudden shift of fate, the tide turned in our favor. The assailants, overwhelmed by our unwavering resistance, beat a hasty retreat into the shadows, their ominous figures fading into the night.

With labored breaths, we surveyed the aftermath of the confrontation, our bodies weary from the ordeal yet our spirits undaunted. We had confronted the darkness head-on and emerged triumphant, a testament to the strength of our camaraderie and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

In the midst of the chaos, the eerie sound of slow clapping reverberated through the darkened forest, sending shivers down our spines. I turned, my breath catching in my throat, to see Principal Anderson emerging from the shadows, his presence casting a pall over the already tense atmosphere.

"Congratulations," he began, his voice dripping with thinly veiled disdain, "you've managed to dispatch a third of my guards. But you can't keep up this resistance forever. Why not simply accept the status quo?"

His words hung heavy in the air, a stark reminder of the power he wielded over us. But defiance burned bright within us, refusing to be extinguished by his manipulative rhetoric.

"Karina," he said, I tensed.

"you could still have a place among the prefects," he continued, his gaze shifting from one of us to the next, "and Hyein, Danielle, you both have promising futures ahead of you."

Before anyone could respond, a stick hurtled through the air, aimed squarely at Principal Anderson. But with unnerving speed, he caught it mid-flight, his chuckle sending a chill down my spine. My eyes darted to Minji, her expression twisted with rage as she stepped forward, her torn coat discarded on the ground, revealing a shirt stained with blood and dirt.

"I don't need your help," Minji retorted, her voice dripping with defiance. "I can handle things just fine on my own."

Principal Anderson's expression softened slightly, a facade of concern masking his true intentions. "I know you can" he said observing the mess we made.
"But imagine what you could achieve with my assistance," he urged, his tone almost pleading.

Before he could continue, Yunjin interjected, her voice sharp with anger. "Listen here, dickbag if you want peace, you're going to have to make amends for all the vampires you've killed, including us."

Principal Anderson's sneer was palpable as he dismissed her words with a wave of his hand. "Those bloodsuckers don't deserve apologies, nor do they deserve to be welcomed back into society. Just look at the trouble they've already caused."

Haerin's response was swift, her words cutting through the tension like a knife.  "Ar fi fost bine dacă m-ai fi primit cu brațele deschise." It would have been nice if you had welcomed me with open arms, she said in a language I didn't understand.

What stunned me to my core was Principal Anderson's chuckle in response as he replied in the same unfamiliar tongue, "Ei bine, mă cunoști. Nu am obiceiul să primesc ciudați."
Well, you know me. I don't make a habit of welcoming strangers.

My gasp caught in my throat as I struggled to comprehend what was unfolding before my eyes. Before I could even form a coherent question, a guttural growl erupted from Hanni, her eyes ablaze with a primal ferocity that sent shivers down my spine. Even Principal Anderson seemed taken aback by the sudden display of animalistic rage.

"And what do we have here?" Principal Anderson's voice broke through the tense silence, his attempt at humor falling flat in the face of the impending danger. "Some sort of oversized housecat?"

But before anyone could respond, the air was pierced by the sickening sound of flesh being torn apart. A horrifying sight greeted us as a sharpened stake, its tip gleaming with malice, impaled Principal Anderson, causing him to gasp and choke on his own blood.

"She's a panther, actually," Winter's voice cut through the chaos, her tone calm and matter-of-fact as she revealed the truth behind Hanni's transformation.
Principal Anderson's eyes widened in disbelief as he collapsed onto the stake protruding from his chest, his lifeless body crumpling to the ground in a grotesque heap. The forest fell silent once more, the only sound the soft rustle of leaves in the breeze, as we stood amidst the aftermath of the unimaginable.

The gravity of the moment hung heavy in the air as we gazed upon the lifeless form of Principal Anderson, the architect of so much pain and suffering. Hanni, her panther form still radiating with a fierce energy, stood over him like a silent guardian, her eyes fixed on the fallen tyrant with a mixture of triumph and defiance.

For a moment, none of us moved, each lost in our own thoughts and emotions. But then, slowly, realization began to sink in. With Principal Anderson dead, the balance of power had shifted, and a new chapter was about to unfold.

"We did it," I whispered, the words feeling surreal as they left my lips. "We actually did it."

The others exchanged glances, their expressions a mix of relief, exhaustion, and disbelief. But amidst the chaos and uncertainty, there was also a glimmer of hope-a sense that perhaps, against all odds, we might have a chance at a better future.

Winter meets my gaze as we rush into each other's arms. I embrace her tightly, unable to loosen my grip despite her protest. "You're holding me... a little tight there," she manages to say amidst the pressure. But I pay no heed, holding her even tighter, unwilling to let go.

"We just killed our principal," Hyein stated, but I couldn't tear my gaze away from Winter. "Indeed," Haerin agreed, her tone resolute. "And I'd do it again," Minji declared, her voice dripping with disdain. "Acel ticălos viclean," she spat out, earning a surprised glance from Haerin.

"What did she just say?" Danielle inquired, to which Winter and I simultaneously responded, "A lot of bad words," exchanging a knowing smile.

"You left me," I murmured, finally tearing my eyes away from Winter. "I'll never leave. I'm your detention buddy, remember?" she reassured me, her voice warm and comforting. "And something tells me we're all in a lot of trouble," she added, her expression serious.

We glanced around at each other, the gravity of the situation sinking in. "I feel sick," Danielle confessed, clutching her stomach in distress. "What do we do now?" Hyein asked, her voice tinged with uncertainty.

"I guess we clean up after ourselves," Yunjin suggested, brushing pieces of hair that stuck to her forehead. The moon cast its ethereal glow over us, and amidst the chaos and uncertainty, I couldn't help but feel a true sense of peace wash over me.

Minji found herself grappling with a whirlwind of emotions, the weight of their recent actions heavy on her conscience. She sat on a fallen tree trunk, lost in thought, when Haerin's voice broke through her reverie.

"What're you thinking so hard about?" Haerin's presence beside her brought a sense of comfort amidst the chaos.

Minji sighed, struggling to articulate her turmoil. "About how much shit we're in right now," she confessed.

Haerin's response was reassuring, her tone steady. "It'll be okay. We're in good hands," she said, casting a glance over their makeshift campsite where their friends were busy disposing of the bodies and cleaning the forest floor.

Curiosity tugged at Minji's mind. "Do you know what comes next?" she asked, seeking some semblance of clarity in the uncertain future.

Haerin shook her head, her expression unreadable. "I can't tell the future," she replied with a hint of amusement.

A wistful smile tugged at Minji's lips. "Maybe time travel would've come in handy," she mused, half-jokingly.

Haerin's response was earnest. "We'll never know," she said, her gaze softening as she looked at Minji. "I want to stay in this reality, the one where you learned how to curse your dead principal," she admitted with a playful grin.

Minji couldn't suppress a smirk. "Okay, maybe I did some research when I should've been in class. No big deal," she confessed sheepishly.

Haerin's approval was evident in her expression. "You took the time to learn something that means a lot to me. It's a 'big deal'," she insisted, genuine appreciation shining in her eyes.

Before Minji could dwell further on their exchange, Haerin gracefully leaped off the tree, landing on her feet with effortless grace. "We'll talk about this later. Looks like Hyein needs help," she remarked before heading off to assist their friend.

As Minji watched Haerin go, a sense of warmth flooded her heart. "I think I'm in trouble," she whispered to herself, but what she truly meant to say was, "I think I'm in love."
