The heroes made it to the dead city that was centuries abandoned before the great fight between Horus and Set. Not a single soul was around there. The gods warned that there could be dangers to keeping mortals from ever getting their hands on the book.
"Okay, Bugaboo. You ready?" Black Sphinx asked Red Scarab.
"Yeah, but don't waste your nine lives," Red Scarab said.
Their camels grunt deeply as they have to wait out here whether or not their riders make it out alive.
"We'll be back soon" Red Scarab pets her camel's snout.
"Those camels wouldn't stop pooping everywhere. Sheesh" Black Sphinx rolled his eyes at these animals.
"I get it" Red Scarab shook her head and headed down into the ruins of the city.
"It looks like Hamunaptra. They say it's just a myth story" Black Sphinx recognizes how the city used to be for the gods until the great fight led the city into ruins for centuries.
"But it does exist after all for centuries" Red Scarab checks the ruins.
"Careful, Bugaboo. This place could be cursed with undead and who knows what else" Black Sphinx said.
"Got it" Red Scarab ignites a makeshift torch.
"Anubis has undead beings that were either mummified alive. The myth story thinks that if those mummified alive were cursed for eternity without having to be dead" Black Sphinx looks up at the statues of Horus and Set.
"Yeah, I've heard the stories that anyone who commits a serious crime like dark magic gets the punishment of being mummified alive," Red Scarab tells him that she has overheard some slaves talking about it.
"Looks like we both did some homework to boost our knowledge," Black Sphinx said and found a door.
"As well as boosting our awareness to not become mummified alive" Red Scarab said.
They opened it and with the torch lit up the room. Hundreds of dead skeletons are everywhere in the tomb, possibly robbers that got in but did not make it out alive in booby traps.
"There could be anywhere a trap could be set off" Black Sphinx cautiously looks around.
"Shit. Well, this is gonna get real" Red Scarab threw a rock to find a trap, "Wait for it" She lifts one finger up.
The floor slides open to reveal a pit filled with spikes.
"Shit!" Black Sphinx saw lots of decayed corpses on the spikes.
"By Osiris!" Red Scarab gasps at the sight.
"Nephthys the goddess of protection surely did not put a lot of protection for this" Black Sphinx looks away.
"Hold on!" Red Scarab grabs him and swings over.
Another booby trap of arrow darts from the walls fired rapidly but Black Sphinx morphed his weapons into shield to block them.
"There are more to come," He said once they stopped shooting.
The mechanism activates moving blades but with their powers, they were able to be fierce and agile to dodge them without getting their bodies sliced off.
"WHOA!" Red Scarab jumps out of the way and flips over another.
The feline was very fast and agile to move, quickly dodging the blades from the moving walls and they both ran to the halls where the doors were sliding down slowly.
"Quickly!" Red Scarab ran as the doors were closing.
They knew they were not gonna make it but the feline turned his weapon into a staff, throwing it to stop the sliding doors.
"Quickly Red Scarab!" He gestured for her.
Red Scarab slides under the door with him taking his staff. Trying to catch their breath that they have passed through the traps alive. But with these powers, they were able to survive.
"We.....made it.....Kitty" Red Scarab panted too hard.
"Now....that's teamwork Bugaboo" Black Sphinx caught his breath.
"Yeah. I did not get squished like a bug" Red Scarab said.
Black Sphinx helps her stand up, "I'm glad you're in one piece"
"For a cat can always land on his feet with nine lives," Red Scarab said.
"And he always will again" Black Sphinx said before looking around to see where they are.
"Looks like we're inside some chamber," Red Scarab said.
"Whatever is guarding it sure hates a living intruder to be living" Black Sphinx said.
"Apparently Kitty. But we'll try to defeat it" Red Scarab said.
"That's the spirit," Black Sphinx said.
"Lord Anubis really doesn't want a bad mortal to claim something in here" Red Scarab saw the carvings of the history between Horus and Seth.
"Yeah. There's always a price" Black Sphinx looks at the carvings.
They saw how the gods battled each other on the carvings. Horus won as king of Egypt.
"The stories of their fight interests me," Black Sphinx said.
"Why? Everyone thinks it was just a story" Red Scarab said.
"Yeah, but it seems to be true since we've seen some of them in person," Black Sphinx said.
"They say gods were 10ft taller and had gold running through their veins instead of blood," Red Scarab said.
"Yeah, I've never seen a god bleed," Black Sphinx said.
"Let's keep moving. If the myth is real from stories, the undead sure will likely try to mummify us alive" Red Scarab held a torch to light up in the tomb.
"Right behind you, Bugaboo" Black Sphinx held his own torch.
"This is no grave robbery, kitty. If the pharaoh does something beyond madness, it would be much worse than the evil gods" Red Scarab said.
"Yep," Black Sphinx nodded.
"But there are so much worse than bad things in life we cannot imagine, bugaboo. If Hathor the goddess of love would have done something for them to understand hatred only destroys everything into nothing" Red Scarab found a way in through the statues of Anubis.
"Only love can conquer hate" Red Scarab looks briefly at the statues.
"Anubis sure doesn't want anyone to be brought back from the dead but to punish those who became undead at a price" Black Sphinx lights the lanterns for more light, despite having night vision.
"Our world can't support so many lives without death" Red Scarab lights up another lantern.
"And Anubis was right about that. Everyone has one life to live a life. We cannot escape mortality when we are created to be mortal" Black Sphinx said, nearly almost falling into a pit of scorpions, "Whoa! Well, sometimes life can try to kill us without knowing how we are gonna die" He moves away from the pit.
"We gotta be careful, Kitty" Red Scarab looks down.
"I really hate rats, spiders, and scorpions" Black Sphinx shuddered.
"More than I hate slaveowners" Red Scarab threw her yoyo to swing over.
The feline makes a very long leap, "Well if we are lucky enough to free them. Perhaps you should be the goddess of creation"
"Maybe, Kitty" Red Scarab scratched his chin.
"Meow" He purred so loud that he liked his chin scratched.
"So cute" Red Scarab giggled at it.
"Even if I was the god of bad luck, I wouldn't want to end up like those evil gods. Some say destruction is like evil but I'm not evil" Black Sphinx nuzzled her neck.
"I know but easy now, kitty" Red Scarab tried to push him off.
"Sorry. Cat tendencies I guess" Black Sphinx purred but stopped nuzzling.
"You're too cute" Red Scarab continues to go through the chambers.
They came across another statue of Anubis but was guarded by the undead mummies that had been suffering in the ruins for eternity that used to worship Set.
"Anubis could've warned us about those guys eating spiders and scorpions" Black Sphinx winced at the undead eating those things.
"No kidding!" Red Scarab was grossed out.
"Hopefully they still have hearts for us to kill them. Their other organs are probably in sacred jars" Black Sphinx made his weapon into bow and arrows.
"Yeah, Lucky charm!" Red Scarab summons her charm and catches it, "A Khopesh sword? Perfect"
"A lady with a sword? Very un-ladylike" Black Sphinx fired the undead in the chest.
Red Scarab sliced through one mummy in two, "You were saying?"
"Goddesses don't get brutal like a man" Black Sphinx fired another arrow at the undead.
"Who said ladies can't fight?" Red Scarab attacks two mummies.
"Says the goddess of love herself" Black Sphinx clawed three mummies at a fast pace.
"Mmmhmmm?!" Red Scarab jumps over two and decapitates them.
"Now you're losing your lady-like manners" Black Sphinx chuckled.
"Maybe I am, kitty cat," Red Scarab said once she defeated one more mummy.
But unfortunately, the chopped limbs moved on their own due to being undead.
"Oh, shit! Fire would be better to burn! Like now!" Black Sphinx said before the reanimated arm tried to choke him.
"Hold on!" Red Scarab pulls the arm off his throat. She threw it at the nearby lanterns and it caught fire.
Black Sphinx breathed heavily to get some air back in his lungs.
"You okay?" Red Scarab asked.
"Yeah," Black Sphinx coughed hard.
"Breathe. Just breathe" Red Scarab said.
Black Sphinx breathes slowly and then normally, "How the hell can a reanimated arm have much strength like that?"
"Must be magic" Red Scarab guessed.
"Or a curse. At least now we know where they are guarding but I've read in scrolls that tombs have ancient booby traps. Ever heard of pressurized salt acid?" Black Sphinx asked.
"No" Red Scarab replied.
"It melts a person without having to be a corpse," Black Sphinx said.
"Oh dear!" Red Scarab exclaims.
"Anubis was no fool but to prevent anyone to get their hands on something" Black Sphinx said.
Suddenly, the brainwashed servants came in, working for Pharaoh, and demanded for the cursed book from the heroes but they didn't have it.
"Sorry to disappoint you but we don't have it!" Red Scarab readies herself.
"The pharaoh isn't gonna use the book for madness! You want it, it's over there near the statue" Black Sphinx points so they can unlock it for the salt acid to kill them.
"Black Sphinx, what are you doing?!" Red Scarab asked.
"Trust me," Black Sphinx said.
They saw the servants approach the box. Black Sphinx knows how much greed a person gets without caring about warnings, especially traps that could kill them. As they did open the box, pressurized salt acid touched them and it sizzled their flesh in agonizing pain.
"Let's go, Milady!" He grabs her hand.
"How did you know it was a trap?!" Red Scarab said.
"I just guessed. Besides there are traces of acid marks here" Black Sphinx said.
"Wait! Stop!" Red Scarab stopped running and saw the carving wall hollow like something was in it.
"What?" Black Sphinx stopped.
"There. Cataclysm that wall" Red Scarab points at the hollow wall.
"CATACLYSM!" Black Sphinx destroys the wall.
The debris wall crumbled and inside the wall was the Book of the Dead hidden all along.
"There it is" Red Scarab approached it.
