Chapter 20: And My World Came Crashing Down
Karina's perspective: ⚕

The cavernous emptiness that settled within me morphed into an insistent ache, a relentless throb that resonated with the chaos surrounding us. My gaze swept across the crumbling hall where Haerin valiantly fought the last vampire, and Minji and Hanni fought alongside her, their efforts etched with determination.

As the crescendo of battle roared, an unwelcome voice sliced through the tumult. Giselle, the embodiment of malevolence, addressed me with a tone that sent shivers down my spine. "Ready to give up?" she hissed, her words dripping with a vampiric allure that matched her ominous presence.

I turned to face her, the ache within me transforming into a seething resentment, then erupting into an inferno of rage. Giselle stood there, an otherworldly figure, her words a venomous invitation to surrender. My blood boiled in response, defiance burning in my eyes as I met hers.

"No," I retorted, my voice laced with a determination that mirrored the intensity of the battle. The air crackled with tension as I squared my shoulders, ready to confront the malevolent force that sought to unravel everything. In that moment, the pain transformed into a fervent resolve—a fire within me that mirrored the chaos surrounding us.

Recollections from the pages of that book Winter had given me flashed in my mind—a guide to vampire weaknesses. Among them, the vulnerability of their necks and the power of the cross. My hand instinctively sought the nape of my shirt, fingers curling around the necklace hidden within. The cool metal pressed against my skin as I withdrew it, revealing the cross that hung from the delicate chain.

Giselle's predatory eyes, keen and perceptive, locked onto the gleaming emblem. A chill ran down my spine as her gaze bore into mine. Minji shot me a wary look, a silent acknowledgment of the gravity of my decision. But I could sense that she understood; this was our battle now. Haerin, though untiring, would be weakened by the formidable symbol of the cross—it was a calculated risk, but one I was willing to take.

In that charged moment, the hall seemed to still as I held the cross aloft. The silver gleamed in the fractured light, a beacon of defiance against the encroaching darkness. Giselle, a creature of the night, hissed, her voice taking on an otherworldly timbre that resonated with centuries of malevolence. "You think a mere trinket will save you, little mortal?"

The challenge in her words only fueled my determination. "It's not about saving myself," I declared, my voice firm. "It's about ending this."

Giselle's malevolent chuckle resonated through the hall as she descended, an embodiment of supernatural cruelty. With a sinister grace, she lassoed Haerin, a little mean. Haerin, stalwart until the end, shivered and sank to her knees, a testament to the overwhelming power that sought to crush us.

A sudden grunt of pain behind me drew my attention to Hanni, who, in the midst of the chaos, clutched her arm. Blood oozed forth, an unsettling hue distinguishing it from ordinary life force. As if defying the laws of nature, the blood levitated, casting an otherworldly glow in the dimness. Then, Hanni spoke, her voice carrying an unexpected strength, "Nobody hurts my best friend."

My brows furrowed in confusion, my gaze fixed on Hanni. In an inexplicable display of power, the blood she controlled stretched like an elastic force, snaking towards Giselle and wrapping around her throat. Giselle gasped, her fingers twitching, a sudden vulnerability overcoming her. Hanni, grunting with the effort, held the vampiric force at bay.

I stood frozen, caught between horror and awe, as Hanni, driven by an unyielding determination, choked Giselle. The vampire gasped for breath, her fingers clawing at the ethereal restraints. A moment of silence hung in the air, broken only by the sounds of struggle.

Then, Giselle, seemingly undeterred by the impending danger, chuckled. "Impressive," she wheezed, the defiance in her voice undiminished. The sight of her resilience, even in the face of Hanni's supernatural intervention, sent shivers down my spine.

The sight of Hanni, weakened and crumpling under the aftermath of her formidable effort, left a heavy ache in my chest. It was a poignant reminder of the fragility of our existence in the face of these malevolent forces. With her incapacitated, it boiled down to just Minji and me—mere mortals confronting the looming shadows of vampires.

As Giselle approached Minji with a predatory grace, a gnawing sense of helplessness enveloped me. The question lingered in my mind like a haunting echo—did we ever stand a chance against these formidable adversaries? The odds seemed insurmountable, a relentless reminder of our mortality in this supernatural battleground.

A surge of determination compelled me to intervene as Giselle closed in on Minji. However, an unknown force, a shadowy presence, held me back. The ethereal restraint felt like an ominous reminder of the overwhelming power Giselle wielded. I strained against the invisible shackles, desperate to shield Minji from the impending threat.

"Giselle, please," I implored, my voice tinged with both fear and defiance. The vampire, emanating an aura of ancient malevolence, turned her attention to me. Her voice, a blend of darkness and seduction, cut through the air. "Did you think mere mortals could challenge us, dear Karina?"

The taunting words sent a chill down my spine, a stark realization of the vast chasm that separated us from the supernatural force before us. Giselle's power loomed like an impenetrable barrier, and in that moment, the weight of our vulnerability pressed upon me. It was too late.

Minji's gasp echoed through the room as she realized she was back in the same space with Haerin, hours before. Disbelief painted her expression — had she truly traveled through time? "Seriously?" she mumbled to herself. Haerin was crouched by an unconscious Hanni, and Minji's relief washed over her. "Haerin," she said urgently.

"I need to focus, Minji," Haerin grumbled, her attention fixed on the task at hand.

Minji shook her head in frustration. "No, Haerin. It's no use. We have to..." She faltered, lost for words. Time travel had thrown her into a conundrum. What actions could she take to alter the course of events? What did she need to change to shape a different outcome? The weight of uncertainty pressed upon her.

As Haerin skillfully wrapped up Hanni's arm, she posed a question to Minji, "Are you ready?" Minji nodded in affirmation. It had all happened so fast.

-

Amidst the campus turmoil, Minji found herself straddling the fragile boundary between vampire and human existence. Her heartbeat, a subtle melody, resonated in the silent vampiric world that surrounded her. The absence of the principal had unleashed chaos, granting vampires unchecked freedom.

As they traversed the campus, disrupting the usual tranquility, Giselle's control over her vampire allies appeared less absolute than projected. Minji's enigmatic presence played a pivotal, unnoticed role in this vampiric drama of chaos and control.

"Haerin-ah!" a voice pierced the air, causing both Haerin and Minji to sharply pivot. Before them stood a boy with striking white hair and undeniable charisma. "Fancy seeing you here," he remarked, briefly casting a discerning glance at Minji, who remained a mysterious figure.

"Ricky, hello," Haerin greeted, and Minji observed the exchange with a raised brow. The revelation of Ricky being associated with Giselle prompted Haerin's inquiry.

"I didn't know you were a Giselle follower," Haerin probed. Ricky swiftly clarified, "What? Oh no, I'm just here to see what's so great about Earth. So far, it's living up to my expectations." His declaration left Minji intrigued and skeptical, "really?" She asked, contemplating the true nature of his presence. He smiled "Indeed, The thing about Giselle is-"

The ambient sounds of chaos abruptly yielded to shrill screams, cutting through the conversation between Haerin and Ricky. In Ricky's eyes, a primal hunger flashed, an undeniable manifestation of his vampiric nature. Haerin's plea held a delicate yet commanding tone, bearing the weight of a shared history. Ricky hesitated, torn between his bloodlust and the loyalty instilled by Haerin.

"Ricky, please," Haerin implored, and a somber agreement echoed in his resolve. "Only because you practically raised me, I'll lay low," he conceded, walking away and leaving behind a momentary lull in the chaos that gripped the campus.

As Ricky departed, Minji's mind whirred with thoughts. Suddenly, it clicked. "Ricky!" she called out, and he halted. Minji caught up to him, a question lingering on her lips. "What do others think of Giselle?" she inquired.

Before Minji knew it, she found herself in a convention hall filled with multiple vampires speaking over each other. Struggling to gain their attention, Haerin intervened with authority. "Silence," she declared, and the room fell quiet. Minji shot Haerin a grateful look.

"So, can we all agree that we're terrified of Giselle?" Minji clarified, prompting eager noises of agreement from the gathered vampires. A small smile played on Minji's lips as a collective acknowledgment of their shared fear permeated the room.

"How do you feel about switching sides?" Minji inquired, prompting a collective tilting of heads among those gathered. The air in the room thickened with anticipation as they contemplated the proposition.

"Think about it, ending this war that's been ongoing for centuries once and for all, tonight," Minji declared, her words weaving through the convention of vampires. Haerin observed her, a subtle confusion etching her features.

"If things go the way she wants it to," Minji continued, "you'll all die. I saw it." Haerin's eyes widened, the room hanging on Minji's every word. "We killed you all, until Giselle killed Winter, then hurt Hanni, and was about to kill me," Minji spoke gently, the weight of past events pressing upon the gathered vampires.

As they listened attentively, even Ricky displayed a rare concern. "But if we stick together and trust each other, we can kill Giselle and live in peace," Minji proposed. Skepticism lingered in the room like a shadow.

"How do we know you won't just kill us all?" a vampire questioned. Haerin stepped forward, her presence commanding attention. "Because Minji isn't entirely human. She's a shiv in the night, and all the people left in this school are willing to sacrifice their prejudiced views in return for their lives," Haerin eloquently fed their egos, a subtle nod of understanding passing through the crowd.

"How will we go about this?" inquired a girl with fangs on display. The vampire collective, a deathly pale hue hinting at centuries of immortality, crimson eyes reflecting uncertainty, awaited guidance. Raven-black hair cascaded over the girl's shoulders—an echo of centuries lived and lost. She had died once by Haerin's hand, but tonight, Minji would ensure she lived.

Suddenly, a voice from behind Minji sounded. "I have a few ideas about that." Minji turned around, Karina stood, with Winter not far behind. The stage was set for a confrontation that would decide the fate of both vampires and humans alike.

Karina's piercing gaze swept across the assembly of vampires, a mix of determination and weariness evident in her eyes. Winter stood beside her, a silent force radiating strength and resilience.

"We've been through a lot, and I get it. Trust doesn't come easy, especially when you're dealing with someone like Giselle," Karina began, her words carefully chosen to resonate with the vampires' collective experiences.

Winter's eyes scanned the room, her gaze locking with those of the vampires. "But we're not here to deceive you. We're here to end the cycle of violence, to break free from Giselle's grip," Winter added, her voice carrying an undercurrent of quiet resolve.

Minji stepped forward, her presence a blend of vulnerability and conviction. "I've seen the future she envisions, and it's a world bathed in blood. We can change that. Together," Minji urged, her eyes meeting each vampire's gaze.

A murmur of uncertainty lingered among the vampires. One of them, a vampire with silver streaks in his hair, spoke up. "Why should we believe you? Giselle has promised power and dominance."

Karina nodded, acknowledging the skepticism. "Power isn't worth it if it comes at the cost of endless strife. Giselle's vision is a path to destruction, not dominion," Karina asserted, her tone cutting through the doubts.

As the vampires exchanged glances, another, a female vampire with a regal aura, stepped forward. "What's the plan, then? How do we take down Giselle?" she asked, a flicker of hope in her eyes.

Winter's lips curled into a determined smile. "We gather our strength, expose her weaknesses, and confront her head-on. The key is unity—humans and vampires standing together," Winter explained, her words resonating with the shared desire for liberation.

Haerin, who had been silently observing, spoke up. "We've seen the devastation she can cause. It's time to put an end to this reign of fear. Will you stand with us?"

The room fell into contemplative silence. The weight of the decision hung heavy in the air, the vampires grappling with the prospect of defying Giselle's influence and forging a new path. The fate of Crestwood Heights teetered on the precipice of change.

Hours dragged on, the aftermath of the war lingering in the air as vampires and humans coexisted in the same space. The room pulsated with an eerie suspense, a fragile peace holding until Giselle realized her dominion was slipping through her fingers.

My instinct urged me to seek out Minji, to unravel the mysteries she held in the depths of her visions, but Haerin, a vigilant guardian, shielded her from my inquiries. They existed in a protective bubble, and my desire to peer inside intensified.

Distracted, I felt a touch on my shoulder. I turned to face Winter, who uttered, "Stop worrying." A retort formed on my lips, denying any anxiety, but her smile cracked through my façade. Her index finger lightly pressed the space between my brows, a peculiar ritual that eased the tension I hadn't acknowledged. "Right," she quipped, and I seized her hand.

"What really happened between you and Giselle?" I inquired, searching for answers. Winter hesitated, her response veiled in the uncertainty of unspoken events. "I'll tell you another day," she said, leaving me to ponder the implications. Would there truly be another day?

A hushed whisper circulated, "It's time." The ground beneath us quivered, signaling the imminent confrontation. Tension tightened its grip on me, knowing Giselle, though outnumbered, still wielded formidable power, casting doubt over the outcome of the impending encounter.

The door handle rattled, and with a thunderous crash, the door was sent flying off its hinges. Giselle, in her formidable Black Mamba form, emerged. Her serpent-like features, with golden or green eyes, and the ability to morph into a hydra-like entity, radiated an ominous presence. Clad in all black with a golden crown, she bore an enigmatic air.

A gasp escaped my lips as Giselle surveyed the room, a wry smirk playing on her lips. "What's this, a tea party?" she taunted, freezing me in place. As she approached, the shadows surrounding her began to dance and shift. The changes were subtle at first, casting doubt on their reality. Facial expressions shifted, limbs subtly changed position, and even the seemingly solid ground betrayed its reliability.

My certainty solidified when the principal's sculpture began shedding tears of blood. All around, blurred faces wept, and the dark red liquid cascaded down the stone wall, triggering unsettling twitches and convulsions in the figures it touched.

"Holy shit," Minji cursed, fear evident as she sought refuge behind Haerin. The three vampires brandished their weapons, while I clutched the silver cross around my neck. The four of us formed a defensive circle, resolute against the chaotic transformation of the environment.

Twisted figures emerged from the ancient walls, accompanied by a cascade of dirt and sand resembling macabre snow. Beneath this gruesome exterior lay a nightmarish sight – grayish, slimy, rotting skin adorned with thousands of tiny eyes. Faces lacked eyes and noses, replaced by a grotesque display of tumors, oozing ulcers, and layers of loose, wrinkled skin. A dissonant metal clicking accompanied their erratic movements, akin to a stream of maggots.

In stunned silence, I grappled with the realization that Giselle wielded powers beyond my comprehension. The battlefield had transformed into a surreal nightmare, and the impending confrontation promised horrors yet unseen.

"I thought you said these shadows wouldn't be strong enough to hurt us!" A vampire grimaced, repulsed by the sight of coarse pus and blisters that churned his stomach.

Haerin instinctively shielded Minji as ominous figures approached. She shook her head, "They're not ghosts. It's a kind of demon."

"Demons?! You mean those things in the Scriptures with horns, tails, and other embellishments?" Another vampire asked incredulously. He had dismissed demons as mere inventions, like angels and God. Little did he know, they were real and far more grotesque than he imagined.

A skirmish erupted, but the futility of the struggle soon became apparent. "Buy me five minutes," Winter instructed the group. Her irises glowed with a disturbing red, intensifying until tiny streaks resembling a spider's web sprawled across the skin around her eyes. The air crackled with electricity.

Other vampires engaged the demons with ferocity, tearing limbs and twisting heads. However, the acidic slime they exuded left burn marks on their attackers. Minji joined the battle dance, but the relentless demons continued their onslaught. Eyeballs on their faces and bodies fired jets of potent acid poison with every shake. Ricky's shout pierced the chaos as the poison struck him, and the skin of his thigh melted instantly.

There were too many, and the overwhelming tide would soon consume us.

Winter summoned energy, swiftly shielding Minji from a barrage of incoming poison. A quiet growl escaped her lips, a testament to the excruciating pain she endured from the corrosive substance.

I felt a sense of helplessness, witnessing Winter bear the pain meant for me. Guilt and weakness consumed me, questioning what I had done for her. All I brought into her life was danger, lies, and trouble. Yet, she consistently chose me over Giselle, who might have deserved her love more.

As the vampires and Minji fought to buy time, an incantation hummed under their breaths. Winter's eyes glowed with a burning red light that shifted to the center of her palms. Bringing her hands together, the fiery color radiated fiercely between her fingers, akin to a seed on the verge of explosion, barely contained by the vampire's hands.

A swirling draught enveloped her, lifting her silky raven locks. With a primal growl, she released the pent-up energy between her palms.

In an instant, a shockwave rippled in all directions, and an invisible kingdom rapidly expanded. The Crestwood Heights border she created caused the demons to collapse, turning into a bloody mucus that covered the ground like a morbid pool. Her kingdom expanded relentlessly until it reached a radius of half a mile, leaving none of the demons alive within.

It was a masterful parallel reality spell. Winter, exhausted, soon collapsed. I crouched down beside her, Minji's urgent call echoing in my ears. "Karina!" Minji yelled, urging me to action. "There's no time," she breathed before rejoining the fray. We were left to fend for ourselves. And I couldn't let her die again.
