Chapter 12: Midnight Shadows
⛧°。⋆༺♱༻⋆。°⛧
The atmosphere in the detention room was tense as I strolled in with my signature charm and self-assuredness. The other students serving their punishments seemed to watch with a mixture of curiosity and bemusement, clearly not accustomed to someone who appeared to relish being in detention.

Karina, seated at the front desk, maintained her composed demeanor but couldn't hide the exasperation that flickered in her eyes when she saw me. I couldn't help but find her reactions utterly entertaining.

I took a seat nearby, flashing Karina a playful and flirtatious smile. "Fancy meeting you here, Karina," I said in a velvety tone that carried a hint of mischief.

She sighed softly, her gaze fixed on her work. "Your choice, Winter," she replied, her voice steady but tinged with a touch of annoyance.

I leaned back in my chair, stretching my legs out comfortably. "Well, Karina, as they say, every cloud has a silver lining," I quipped, my tone light and teasing.

As I settled into the detention room, my eyes scanned the mundane surroundings. The room was disappointingly plain, with faded posters adorning the walls, reminding students of the consequences of their actions. It was hardly an inspiring environment.

Three other students were present, each engaged in their own activities. Some were diligently working on homework, while others stared off into space, likely lost in their thoughts of freedom outside these walls.

I reached into my backpack, which I had casually placed on my lap, and retrieved my source of sustenance - a blood bag. With my signature charm, I leaned forward, ensuring that no prying eyes were on me, and took a sip from the fulfilling bag. Aside from a pencil and pen, that's all I needed for my facade of being a regular student.

As I enjoyed my discreet meal, I glanced around the room. No one seemed to pay much attention to me, which was precisely how I liked it. However, my moment of indulgence was interrupted by Karina's stern voice.

"Winter, I know you're on your phone. They're not permitted in detention," she reprimanded.

I raised my head, my lips slightly wet from the bag, and flashed her an apologetic look. My eyes were hooded from the satisfying meal. "My apologies," I said in a low, husky tone, giving her a playful look.

Karina, ever the responsible one, gave me a concerned look. I nonchalantly wiped my lips with the back of my hand before letting my bag fall to the floor. Leaning back in my chair, I directed my gaze toward the ceiling.

Although I didn't require sleep, the sensation of weariness was a pleasant one. It was a temporary escape from my eternal existence, a reminder of what it felt like to be like everyone else, asleep, and I cherished it. If I closed my eyes and simply listened to the ambient sounds of the detention room, it almost felt as though I were a part of this world, blending in seamlessly with the others in slumber.

The classroom was a sanctuary of rhythmic heartbeats, a tempting dessert that beckoned me despite my recent satisfying meal. I couldn't help but groan inwardly, struggling to resist the allure of those beating hearts. "I'm just so full," I muttered to myself in silent frustration.

I tilted my head to the side, my gaze fixed on the window that opened into the bustling hallway. As students passed by, one girl in particular caught my attention. I focused my gaze on her head and, with a subtle exertion of my power, delved into her thoughts.

In her mind, I found a mix of teenage worries and daydreams. She was thinking about her upcoming exams, a boy she had a crush on, and what she would have for lunch. It was a typical whirlwind of adolescent thoughts.

I raised an eyebrow as I returned to my senses, somewhat amused by the mundane concerns of humans. "Humans," I thought to myself with a faint smirk, realizing how different our worlds truly were.

Unbeknownst to me, Karina had approached during my momentary distraction. She called my name firmly, as if she had been trying to get my attention for some time. I looked up at her, taking in her usual appearance—smartly dressed, hair down in shiny waves, and her lips painted in a delicate shade of pink.

"Please remove your feet from the desk," she said calmly, her voice carrying a note of authority. I inhaled deeply and obliged by promptly removing my feet from the desk. Karina glanced at me with a hint of approval.

"You have 25 minutes left," she informed me curtly before turning on her heel and walking back to the main desk. I shuddered, my hand instinctively covering my mouth as I tried to mask my heightened senses. Her scent was utterly intoxicating, making it even more challenging to maintain my facade of nonchalance. Despite the circumstances, I couldn't deny that I was thoroughly enjoying this unexpected opportunity to engage with her.

I cast a quick glance to my right, taking note of the only other student sharing this detention room with me. I couldn't help but feel a pang of gratitude toward him. His presence was a saving grace; without him, I might have resorted to desperate measures like gouging out my own eyes to pass the time.

"How much longer is this going to take?" I growled softly to myself in frustration. While Earth had its occasional perks, I couldn't help but miss the freedom and fewer rules of our realm back in the vampire world.

In my daydream, set in the make-believe realm we vampires called home, I would boldly rise from my seat, stride over to Karina's desk with an air of confidence, and lean against it nonchalantly. My fingers would lightly graze the top of her head, savoring the sensation of her soft, living hair. They would then ghost over her cheek, trailing down to her delicate neck, where her pulse beat steadily. I'd press my thumb dangerously close to her trachea, all the while keeping my gaze locked onto hers.

Swiftly, my hand would clasp around her tie, pulling her closer to me. Our lips would meet in a heated kiss, and I could already picture the disdain in her eyes—the same disdain she always reserved for me. Yet, it would only serve to intensify my desire for her.

My momentary reverie was abruptly shattered by the distinctive click of the door. I watched as the other student left the room, leaving me alone with Karina. A feeling of anticipation and tension hung in the air, and I couldn't help but think, "We're alone now."

⛧°。⋆༺♱༻⋆。°⛧

Karina remained at her desk, her back to me, seemingly engrossed in flicking through some paperwork. It was a facade, one that I was well accustomed to. I knew she was aware of my presence, but she chose to ignore it.

Inwardly, my thoughts raced. The temptation was undeniable, the allure of her proximity impossible to resist. I could practically feel the warmth of her skin, smell the sweet fragrance of her perfume. Every instinct within me urged me to make a move, to bridge the distance between us, to see if I could break through that thick wall of disdain she had built.

I shifted in my seat, the scuffing sound of my shoes against the floor breaking the silence. Karina's shoulders tensed imperceptibly, a subtle sign that she was aware of my movements.

The minutes ticked away, each second an agonizing reminder of the simmering desire that threatened to consume me. I couldn't help but entertain the thought of breaking the silence, of speaking in that charming, flirtatious manner that was so typical of me. Yet, a part of me was intrigued by the challenge of Karina, the enigmatic maturity that set her apart from the others.

As the room grew darker with the fading daylight, I wrestled with my desires and my respect for Karina's boundaries. The tension in the room was palpable, a silent battle of wills that neither of us was willing to concede. She remained steadfast, her mature demeanor unshaken. A subtle challenge hung between us, like a silent dare.

I couldn't resist a playful smirk, knowing it would likely irritate her even more. But irritation was a reaction, and any reaction was better than her icy indifference. I had seen that look before, that cold facade she presented to the world. It only fueled my desire to break through it, to discover what lay beneath.

My body tensed, mirroring her stillness, a predator waiting for its prey to make the first move. In that moment, I couldn't predict what Karina would do next. Would she maintain her unyielding composure, or would she finally succumb to the pressure I was so accustomed to?

The seconds ticked by, the room filled with anticipation. The challenge was set, and I was ready to see how Karina would respond.

"Your time is up, you may leave now."

Karina remained the epitome of maturity and poise as she calmly instructed me to leave detention. Her voice carried an air of authority, and her demeanor showed no signs of being intimidated by my dark and intimidating presence.

I raised a skeptical brow at her words. Was it really that simple? I paused for a moment, fixing my piercing gaze on her back. There was a lingering tension in the room, a palpable energy that crackled between us. It was as if the battle of wills wasn't over just yet.

Reluctantly, I grabbed my backpack, slinging it over my shoulder, and made my way to the door. But before I stepped out, I couldn't resist one last move. Leaning against the doorframe, I cast a challenging smirk back at Karina.

The school was nearly empty at this hour, with only a few staff members and prefects lingering about. The idea of Karina retreating to her dorm, slipping into her peaceful slumber, didn't sit well with me. I couldn't help but wonder if she truly believed I would give up so easily.

The game was far from over, and I had no intention of letting her off the hook so effortlessly.

Karina moved through the classroom with a grace that was truly mesmerizing. She cleaned up the remnants of the detention session with poise, her every movement exuding a sense of maturity that contrasted sharply with my dark and intimidating presence.

Running a hand through her hair, she appeared lost in thought as she prepared to leave the classroom. The rhythmic click of her platformed heels echoed through the empty room as she took her time making her way out of the school building.

Her dormitory was situated in a secluded area reserved for seniors, ensuring that no younger students could disturb her. Upon entering her room, she locked the door behind her, finally able to escape the outside world.

Karina let out a sigh of relief as she slipped her shoes off, her blazer soon following, leaving her in a deep blue jumper. She seemed to find solace in this private moment, allowing herself a brief respite.

As she ran her hand through her hair once more, preparing to unwind, her world was suddenly shattered. With a blood-curdling scream, she was startled beyond belief.

But it was no surprise to me. I had been waiting for this moment, and now, I couldn't help but smile.

"Good evening, Karina," I purred, my presence suddenly known in her private sanctuary.

Karina's heart raced as she turned toward my chilling voice, her eyes widening in shock and terror. She stumbled backward, her face drained of color as she tried to comprehend my presence in her supposedly secure room.

With predatory grace, I advanced slowly, the darkness of the room accentuating the eerie atmosphere. "Surprised, my dear Karina?" I stand u from her prettily decorated bed.

She stammered, struggling to find her words, her mind racing to make sense of the situation. "How did you—what are you doing here?" Her voice trembled with a mixture of fear and anger.

I took another step forward, closing the distance between us. "Oh, Karina, you didn't really think I would leave that easily, did you?"

Karina's back pressed against the wall as she tried to put some distance between us. "You're insane," she whispered, her eyes darting around the room, searching for something, anything.

I continued to advance, my eyes locked onto hers, never wavering. "Perhaps, my dear, but you intrigue me," I admitted, my tone a mix of darkness and seduction. "And I always get what I want."

Her breath came in shallow gasps as she realized there was no way out. The room seemed to close in on her as I closed the final inches between us. In the dim light, her face betrayed a mixture of terror and defiance.

Karina's palm struck my face with an anger that belied her fear. It was a weak blow, but it conveyed her defiance. She withdrew her hand, her eyes wide with realization that she had just challenged a formidable opponent. Her expression transformed from petrified to pouty, her brows furrowing in anger.

I couldn't help but chuckle at her feistiness, finding it strangely appealing. "Feisty, aren't we?" I remarked with a wicked glint in my eye as I faced her once again. Her fear was palpable, and I reveled in it.

I leaned in closer, closing the already limited gap between us, and continued to smile menacingly. The scent of her fear was intoxicating. "Now, my dear Karina," I purred, my voice low and seductive, "I have a proposal for you."

"Spend your days ageing and wasting away in this life, or come with me and become something extraordinary"

She inched further into the wall, as if trying to merge with it. The dread in her eyes was undeniable, and I couldn't help but savor the taste of her terror. I leaned in even closer, my lips dangerously near her ear, and whispered, "You see, resisting me will only make things more... interesting."

I could feel her trembling, her body pressed tightly against the wall. The room seemed to close in on her as I continued to loom over her, the tension between us thick and suffocating. "So, Karina," I said with a sly grin, "what do you say to my proposal?"

"No," Karina retorted sharply, her tone unwavering.

"Are you sure?" I inquired, a hint of intrigue in my voice as I watched her reactions carefully.

She responded by pushing me back and making her way to the other side of the room, her footsteps measured as she inched closer to the door. I couldn't help but wonder if she had forgotten that she was the one who had locked it.

I persisted, curiosity fueling my determination. "Why not?" I questioned further, not bothering to conceal my interest in her response.

Her sneer revealed her skepticism. "I have more than enough reasons to get you suspended, maybe even expelled, and you think I'd accept some sketchy proposal? From you?" Her voice rose with anger, and I couldn't help but find her even more captivating when she was in such a state.

I maintained my composure and acknowledged her valid concerns. "Fair enough, I can show you," I conceded calmly, hiding the thrill that coursed through me. I was far from giving up; in fact, I was just getting started.

"At how much better it is to be... different," I added cryptically, allowing the words to linger in the room. Karina's brows furrowed as she contemplated my enigmatic statement. She didn't possess the knowledge that I was a vampire, but the seed of curiosity had been planted, and it was beginning to sprout.

In the moonlit room, Minji's sleeping form appeared ethereal, her face delicately illuminated by the lunar glow. Her hair cascaded over her features, creating an almost otherworldly image. However, her peaceful slumber was soon disrupted as her eyes fluttered open.

"I'm getting déjà vu," Minji mused as she sat up, her voice tinged with a hint of amusement. Haerin couldn't help but admire the moonlight playing on Minji's features.

"What are you doing here?" Minji inquired, her curiosity evident. Haerin's lips curved into a knowing smile, revealing the glint of her teeth in the natural light.

"Can I not simply be here?" Haerin replied cryptically, her voice carrying that enigmatic tone common among vampires.

Minji let out a soft sigh, and Haerin knew that the conversation was bound to take a more serious turn. "Winter told me some things," Minji confessed, mentioning her cousin's name with a hint of hesitation.

Haerin's expression tightened at the mention of Winter. She had her own complicated history with her fellow vampire, and it seemed that Winter had been spreading information that was best kept hidden.

Before Haerin could respond, Minji surprised her with a question, catching her off guard. "Are you hungry?" Minji asked, her concern for Haerin evident in her eyes.
But the truth was, Minji's eyes held scheming tendencies.
