vanessa felt sick.
the last game of the regular season had finally reached. while feeling shitty, vanessa submitted the lineup card one last time before playoffs.
she didn't know what playoffs would be like, she'd never been in the situation before. but she knew that everything would be completely different.
she was happy to know that she would be getting a little time off before playoffs for the dodgers began. since they were the number 1 seed, everything started for the dodgers about a week later.
the game began off on the wrong foot by letting the rockies score 2 runs in the first inning.
"do you have anything better to do?"
cody was finally back.
"nope."
"why don't you go watch your swing over and over again until you figure out what's wrong?" vanessa suggested, obviously annoyed.
"fine. i will." he said stubbornly.
"and bring me trea." she told him.
"whatever." he muttered to himself.
after cody was finally gone, trea walked over and sat next to vanessa in the bench.
"you needed me?" he said, sitting down.
"not really." she said softly as she leaned her head on his shoulder.
"then what's up?"
"nothing," she sighed. "i just missed you." she began to look at and pick her nails."
"i like your nails." he said looking down at them. "that color looks nice on you."
"thanks trea," she said sarcastically
"what?"
"nothing." she spat
"no, what's wrong?"
"i don't know, i'm not in the mood for compliments." vanessa sighed.
"you? not in the mood for compliments? who are you and what did you do with ness?" he teased
"oh my god shut up." she rolled her eyes at him.
"what are you in the mood for then?"
"going home, taking a nice long nap, hopefully not waking up, and watching the bachelorette." she said. "with you."
"don't wanna be at this game?" he asked. she replied with a slight shake of her head. "why's that?"
"i'm tired, i have a headache, i don't feel good." she explained.
"do you want me to get you some ibuprofen?"
"no it's okay."
"are you sure?"
"i'm sure." she reassured him. "i'll be fine."
"it's our last non stressful game. i want you to enjoy it." he said.
"trea, i'm good. don't worry about me." she continued.
"you know i hate when you say that." trea argued.
"i hate when you worry about me." she said, "i am a fully functioning adult."
"so you're telling me you hate that i care about you."
"that's not what i said."
"that's what your implying." he said
"no im not? assumption makes an ass out of you and me, trea." she snapped.
"im not assuming anything."
"oh but you are."
"god forbid i care about you."
"oh great innings over! time to get back out there!" she pushed him up off of the bench.

"ness."
"well hello jay."
"did you get, uh, thing.."
"you're going to have to be more descriptive."
"letter."
"jay is everything okay?" his voice was shaking, which was odd. he was always super chill and relaxed.
"mom."
"what?"
"she sent.. uhm, a letter t-to me."
"moms gone, jay."
"she's in new york."
"what do you mean?"
"we have to go home, we have to find her."
"i cant. i have playoffs next week."
"she's with dad now, but dads not doing well."
"jay don't you think if dad wasn't okay he would've told us?"
"she said he can't."
"what do you mean he can't?"
"he was diagnosed with dementia."
"the doctors would have called us."
"they have mom's information for his emergency contact."
"don't they know she's supposed to be dead?"
"it was never confirmed."
"i'm so lost jay."
"moms been in new york taking care of dad. i guess for the past month."
"she's been here for the past month?!"
"i booked us a flight. we're leaving at 3 in the morning tomorrow."
"jay i cant leave."
"you have to come."
"i cant."
"please ness, think about it."
"jay.."
"it's for mom."
"okay."
vanessa's bag was still packed from their series in colorado. jaylen called as she had just gotten home from the airport.
she hadn't gotten any letters from her mother. she thought her mother was long gone.
vanessa didn't know what to do. she'd do anything to see her mother, but she couldn't miss playoffs, and she knew that going down to new york would last longer than she'd like.
she was entirely stunned. she had absolutely no words.
her supposedly dead mom was alive.
she grabbed a pad and a pen and began to write a note to whoever would come looking for her.
she took her already backed bag and keys and left for jaylens house.
and from that point on, she wouldn't be sure where her future would be.
