KENZIE
THE NEXT MORNING

Ow, is the first thought I have when I wake up. I slowly roll over, but instantly regret it.

"Fuck," I groan, taking a deep breath. I just lay there for a second.

I feel like literal death. I drank so much last night, first it was to have fun with my friends then it became drinking to not think about high school and about Logan.

Fucking Logan. This is his fault.

I slowly sit up, opening my eyes looking at myself in the mirror that sits right across from me. I look like a mess, pieces of my hair are sticking out every which way possible. I can see there was an attempt to get my makeup off but I have mascara smudged across the left side of my face.

I look over at my room and my jeans and Becky's green shirt are on the floor, but when I stand up I'm only in the tank top and my underwear.

I pull on a pair of cotton shorts and reach into my closet for a hoodie. The one I grab is black Yours Truly, yes like the album by Ariana Grande, hoodie. It's a few sizes too big but I love it.

It was a birthday gift from my parents when I was thirteen, they got my sister and I matching hoodies and tickets to her concert. It was the best night of our young lives.

I slip on my white fluffy slippers and head downstairs. I can hear the distance chatter already.

When I walk into the living room Sam is wrapped in a blanket laying on one end of the couch. Becky has her legs pulled up to her chest and the hood of her hoodie pulled over head as she leans against the side of the couch, opposite of Sam. Alana's laying on the floor on her phone, still in her black dress from last night, and Danni looks like she's falling back asleep curled up in a ball in the love seat.

"She's awake!" Alana cheers, sitting up.

"Quieter," Danni groans trying to cover her ears.

"Shhh," I hum as I make my way over to sit between Sam and Becky on the couch.

"I thought you went home with that guy?" I ask Alana.

"I'm ordering food then we can debrief, what do you want?" Alana sits up and hands me her phone over the coffee table.

I take the phone and start scrolling through the menu of our favorite local coffee shop. They've all already put in their orders and I know exactly what I want, an everything bagel toasted with a shit ton of cream cheese and an iced green tea. I quickly put it in and hand Alana her phone back.

I lean over and rest my head on Sam's hip like it's a pillow. She doesn't even flinch when I lay down, so I close my eyes and try to rest more because every breath I take makes me feel like I might throw up.

I don't know how much time passes but at some point the front door bell rings.

"Got it," I hear Alana say. I slowly open my eyes and sit up.

"Food is here," I whisper poking Sam with my right hand and Becky with my left.

"Stop," Becky reaches over and weakly hits my hand.

Sam doesn't move.

"You keep sleeping, I'll eat your food don't worry," I tease as I slide down to the floor between the couch and the coffee table as Alana walks back in.

Alana pulls out everyone's food and sets them it front of the person it belongs to.

"Thank you," I smile up at her as she hands me my iced tea.

"Say thanks to Mama Miller," Alana winks with her hand in the bag again.

Alana's mom is a real estate agent back in Florida so it's safe to say they're pretty well off. Alana kinda reminds me of one of the other girls on our team, Ellie Jackson, but brunette and with her head in the clouds more.

"Okay, now tell me how the hell you're so awake right now," I look at Alana as I take a sip.

"Hold on," Becky finally speaks from behind me, "I wanna hear to, I just need to sit up without throwing up."

I try not to laugh because if I do, I might throw up.

"Sammy?" I turn and poke her leg.

"Don't wake her," Danni hums.

I turn to look at Danni, who explains, "We ran into her ex last night."

And that explains the dried lines of water downed mascara on her cheeks.

Sam and her ex, Claire, had a really messy break up a few weeks ago. We heard them fighting in Sam's room while we were trying to have a movie night in the living room, we tried our best to drown them out with the tv. And it was all because Claire was jealous of someone Sam works with, but Claire has been jealous and untrusting of Sam since they had started dating even though Sam has been nothing but loyal.

I nod at Danni and start to unwrap my bagel.

"Alana, go first," Danni nods at the brunette sitting on the floor across from me. And that's the start of our morning after debrief.

Alana tells us all about the tattooed guy she met last night, his name was Dominic. And evidently they stayed out until two am then went back to his place and she walked in the door just ten minutes before I came downstairs.

"Alana, you're crazy and I love it," I smile at her.

Alana just smiles sweetly and takes a sip of her coffee.

"Do you think you'll see him again?" I ask Alana.

"We didn't exchange numbers, so no," Alana chuckles, which makes the rest of us smile and shake our heads because that's Alana. She's an in the moment, spontaneous girl.

"Wait, Kenz, what was up with you and that Logan kid?" Becky asks from behind me.

Oh god, I don't wanna talk about him.

I take a deep breath, "Uhm we went to high school together, so just old friends bumping into each other," I shrug.

"Just old friends?" Danni asks teasingly.

"I promise, that's it and that's all it'll ever be," I nod picking up my iced tea.

"Oh c'mon, Kenz! He's hot!" Alana says making me look up at her.

"And that's all he's got going for him," I take a sip of my iced tea, trying to sounds teasing and light hearted but inside I feel annoyed.

All of the girls who are awake laugh. And I thank god that it came off as a joke even though it wasn't.

"You guys are so loud," Sam groans rolling over on the couch.

"Sorry, honey," Becky reaches over and rubs the sleeping girls leg.

"Your foods here if you want it," I offer, turning to look at her over my shoulder.

"Thanks," Sam responds but she's quickly back asleep.

We let Sam sleep as we keep chatting about last night. The girls fill me in on the moments I forgot about, like how I danced on top of the bar with Summer, and evidently how when we got home I sat on the stairs and cried but they couldn't figure out why because my speech was slurred from the alcohol and breathy from the crying.

"Kenz, I've never seen you as drunk as you were last night," Becky says as I turn to look at her.

I normally help Becky be the mom of the group but last night my emotions got the best of me.

"Yeah, I know, I went a bit overboard," I nod. I want to keep it at that but Danni starts theorizing.

"Was it because of Logan? Oh my god! Is there history between you two?" Danni sounds like an over excited kid.

Great, she's never gonna let this go.

"No history," I lie because it's none of their business and I want to forget about it, "He was a year older then me, we barely even knew each other."

More lies.

"He is kinda cute," Alana smiles.

"You can have him," I scoff picking up my bagel to take a bite.

"I just might," she smirks taking a sip of her coffee.
