FABIENNE

"Tell me, Fab. Is your relationship with Priam just an act?"

Sa kaso ng Oplan First Lady, I agreed to its terms and conditions.

I couldn't tell him the truth. At the same time, I couldn't just deflect his question.

"Yen?"

My face lit up nang narinig ko ang boses na 'yon. Sumunod ang mga yabag galing sa backstage. May pumasok sa left wing ng entablado. A familiar figure stood there, at sabay kaming napalingon ni Colin sa kaniya.

"Yam!" I exclaimed with a wide smile. Parang automatic na kumurba ang labi ko. Perfect timing ang dating niya, ah?

"Sorry, were you two in the middle of something?" Colin's just interrogating me about our relationship. It's not much of a big deal.

He might be disappointed that he didn't get to hear my answer. "No, we're just chatting."

"Is that so? I hope you don't mind if I..."

"Sure, go ahead!" Whether he's dismayed or not by the interruption, 'di ko masabi. "See you tomorrow, Fab!"

"See you!"

I scratched my cheek.

"I'm already done with my council duties so I'm free around this time," sagot ni Priam. "Besides, going up to the fifth floor is a good exercise."

"Don't worry, I will make time for it," tugon ni Priam. "Just let me know when and where."

"Habang naghihintay kasi si Mr. President kanina, in-invite ko siyang sumama sa 'tin for meryenda or afternoon gala kapag wala tayong rehearsal. Game na game naman siya!"

"Really?" kunot-noo kong tanong sa aking katabi. "'Di ka ba busy? May upcoming event kayo, 'di ba?"

"I can make time for some fun, just as how I always make time to come here," he said. "I'm also interested in meeting your friends. This seems like the perfect opportunity to do so."

Pakurap-kurap ako sa kaniya. Wow, ah? Sineseryoso niya talaga ang pagiging boyfriend ko. He didn't have to do it. He also didn't have to pretend na interested siyang makilala ang friends ko. He could've used the student council as an excuse to decline the invitation. Pero no! Um-agree siyang sumama. Well, I couldn't blame him lalo na kung na-pressure siya ni Belle habang silang dalawa ang magkausap dito kanina.

"That will be nice!" biglang sabi ni Colin. "I'm also interested in getting to know the USC president more."

"See you then."

Aha! May idea na nag-pop sa isip ko. Maybe Priam and I could take advantage of that gala?

"See you tomorrow!"

"Ingat kayo, Fab!

Maybe that's just normal. Mukhang may malalim ding iniisip si Priam.

Napabuga ako ng hangin at saglit na napapikit. Ako na ang babasag sa katahimikan. "You have no idea how you saved me back there. Medyo suspicious si Colin sa relationship natin, lalo na no'ng nag-kiss tayo—I mean, no'ng kiniss kita sa livestream ng The Herald. He suspects na we're just acting."

"I heard a bit of what he said," sagot ni Priam. "I sensed that you were in trouble, that's why I stepped in."

"Talaga? Gano'n katalas ang pandinig mo?"

"I was listening to Belle, but I was listening more to you and Colin on the stage."

"Then I owe you big time!" Muli akong bumuntong-hininga. He's not the type to accept things at face value. Not responding is the better option sometimes."

"So me joining you and your friends will give us the perfect chance to dispel his suspicions, huh? What a coincidence."

"We have to thank Belle for that opportunity."

"By the way, I have to discuss something serious with you," Priam said, making me turn to him. Napatingala pa ako dahil sa tangkad niya. "It might affect our arrangement, so it's best to keep you informed."

He's always serious, but he had never been this serious. It must be related to the student council. What is it this time?

He thought this was the perfect place para mag-usap kami in private.

The silence was making me a bit uncomfortable. Gano'n ba 'to kaseryoso?

"What's bothering you? You wanna talk about it? I'm here to listen."

"There's a possibility that I'm going to step down as USC president this week."

"You're resigning?! Talaga? What happened? Bakit parang biglaan naman?"

"Cas did something that puts me and Val in a dangerous position," he explained as he turned to me. It turned out that he did not have to do so because the majority bloc eventually voted in favor of it. He inadvertently gave them ammunition, and Alaric is now threatening me and Val with impeachment."

I thought he's smart, I thought he's clever. He's so blinded by revenge kaya baka 'di niya nakita.

"I told Cas that I do not intend to enable him anymore, that's why I'm resigning," Priam went on. "But he asked me to give him a few days to find a way out. I did. If he fails to pull us out of this mess, I'm going to tender my resignation as USC president. Val may need to resign too, so my entire council will be kicked out of office. If that happens, Alaric will serve as acting president until the LEXECOM votes in a new president. A new USC will be then inducted."

The new president may choose not to renew yours in the next semester. If it's going to be Alaric, that makes the matter more complicated. But maybe I can strike a deal with him. He's a CBA student. He probably loves making deals.

I was touched—very touched—by his concern about me. He's even willing to reach out to Alaric just to make sure that I'd continue to enjoy my studies in this university.

"You don't have to do that," malumanay kong sabi. I always find ways! You don't have to worry about me.

"That's the least I can do for you," Priam said, "for dragging you into this mess."

If that's not selfless, I don't know what else is. If students could only hear what he's saying, malamang tuluyan nang magbabago ang kanilang opinyon sa kaniya.

"It's not you who dragged me into this mess," seryoso kong tugon. Seryoso rin ang titig ko sa kaniya. "It's Castiel. Ayaw ko sanang ungkatin ang nakaraan, but you should've fired him before. Siya ang nagpapahamak sa 'yo, eh! Maybe if you offer his head instead of yours, malulusutan mo 'tong threat ni Alaric?"

"Even if I fired him last week, the damage has been already done. Even if I fire him now, it will not make that much difference." Priam shook his head slowly, his eyes looking down. "I'm the USC president, and he's my chief-of-staff. I'm responsible for him and his actions, whether I'm aware or not. The buck stops with me."

Priam doesn't deserve that kind of humiliation.

I wished I could do something, pero labas na 'to sa kaya kong gawin.

"I don't think you should resign, Yam," I said as I looked him in the eye. "I can't believe I'm saying this, but give Cas a chance to get you out of this mess. Since he's so hell-bent in getting his revenge, gagawin niya ang lahat para 'di kayo matanggal sa puwesto."

Nabaling ang tingin niya sa ibang direksiyon. "I think that's what he intends to do—"

"Wala ako sa posisyon na sabihin 'to—ni 'di nga ako isang student council officer—pero sakali mang malusutan n'yo 'to at ayaw mo pa rin siyang tanggalin sa USC, I hope na you'll be more assertive with your authority."

He turned to me again. Wala siyang sinabi, tinitigan niya lang ako.

"You're the USC president, Yam," I reminded him kahit alam kong 'di kailangan. "You're the most powerful student-leader in all of Elysian University. Kung ayaw mo na siyang i-enable, don't let your chief-of-staff have his way. Don't let him do something controversial behind your back again. You want him to be within your reach kaya 'di mo siya tinanggal, right? Then put a leash on him."

"I have an idea or two on how to manage him now." Mariin siyang tumango. "But do we have to put a leash on our friends?"

"Not if they're as destructive as Cas," sagot ko.

"Show him who's the boss, Yam. Show him that you're the freaking USC president."
