"Hey." Keefe tilted Sophie's chin up to see him.
Her whole body shook, and he couldn't blame her, considering he'd appeared out of thin air after months of absence. "What hurts?"
"My heart, you jerk."
He winced at the words - even though he definitely deserved them. He held Sophie tight against his chest, reveling in the comfort of her small body folded into him.
Maybe she was in pain right now. And maybe she hated him. But he knew he'd spend the rest of his life making it up to her. After all, she was what made life worth living.
