Val

We stepped out into the Dingo parking lot and Dally, Johnny, and Ponyboy started inside.

But I just slammed the passenger door shut and stood, unmoving. "Val, let's go," Dally encouraged.

"What if he is cheating on me?" I asked slowly, looking down.

"Then you get to see me beat someone up. It'll be fun, savvy? Very entertaining. Now let's go, it's freezing out here."

When I finally decided to follow them, a grimy hand grabbed my arm and jolted me backwards.

I screamed, which caught the attention of the three greasers in front of me.

"Dallas Winston," the voice snickered, pulling a blade from his back pocket and pushing it against my throat so hard I was surprised that it didn't draw blood.

"Don't you touch her," Dally growled, stepping closer to the person who I could only assume was Tim Shepard.

Tim tightened his grasp, and I inhaled sharply. I felt some drops of blood dribble onto my shirt. "Is this your broad, Dallas?"

"Just go away, or you're gonna regret it."

Dallas stuck his hand into the back pocket his jeans, and I saw Pony look over at me, fear stricken.

He had a heater. I could almost hear Ponyboy saying those words.

"Dally, don't," I screamed, but that only caused my attacker to knee me in the back.

I could sense other boys behind me, snickering and whispering to each other, but I feared that turning around would only increase my chances of being hurt.

Dallas drew his gun, and I almost collapsed. Don't shoot, Dally. Don't shoot. I slammed my eyes shut, allowing hard tears to escape.

"What the hell did I even do to you?" he shot back.

Tim snickered. "Rocky, one of my gang. Bullet hole right in his stomach. Kid's lucky to be alive. Curly says it was you."

Dallas raised an eyebrow, lowering his gun. "Why the hell would I shoot one of yours?"

"Beats me, Winston. Betcha'd hate to see the same thing happen to one of your precious greasers."

I saw Tim's eyes avert to look at Johnny, and Dally tensed.

"If you hurt her, or come anywhere close to any of them, I'll slit your throat before you even have time to beg for mercy." The old Dallas Winston was gone, and all I could see is a rage filled, red-eyed, bloodthirsty hood.

I wanted to say something, but the blade was so close to my throat and blood now made a steady trail down my front.

"Well, well, well. Look who's gone soft for some little kids and a dumb broad."

Tim released me, and I collapsed to the ground.

Ponyboy and Johnny ran up and dragged me over away from Tim, and Dally lowered the heater.

However, my attacker took the opportunity and ran at Dallas. I screamed at the top of my lungs. Tim could kill him. He can't kill him.

Tim slit Dallas's jaw all the way from his cheekbone to his chin, and I gasped, shuffling to my feet. Suddenly, the rest of Shepard's outfit was running at us.

Johnny had a blade, and Pony busted a bottle and held it out. He pushed his long greasy hair away, nervously. I knew he wouldn't use it, he never could.

I had nothing, so I thought quick and found a large rock in the parking lot.

When I turned, Tim was choking Dallas. I threw the rock without thinking, and it hit Tim square in the lip.

He looked around to see who it was, and then released Dally to march over to me.

But Dallas Winston was too quick. He grabbed Tim's leg and he collapsed to the ground, unfortunately taking me with him. I slammed my head onto the parking lot, and felt my vision fading.

Dally raised his gun and pointed it at Tim, tightening on the trigger, but not pulling it.

Johnny and Pony stood in front of me, trying their best to seem threatening.

Tim laughed, a sickly cackle. Then he turned to the rest of his boys and walked over to his T-Bird.

As soon as they drove away, darkness engulfed me and the last thing I felt was Dally's arms around me.

My mouth couldn't form the words I wanted to say, which would have gone something like, "Dallas Winston what the hell happened to my girl?"

I just stood over her, staring with my mouth open wide. Luckily, Dally answered for me.

"Tim Shepard, that bastard," he growled, his face reddening.

"What does he want with you this time?" I asked, tenderly grabbing Val by the back and pulling her closer.

Some blood was on the back of her head and her neck, and Johnny and Ponyboy had already started wrapping her up with some gauze.

Her face was pale, and she just looked tired.

"Thought I shot some guy in his outfit. I dunno why."

"Does she need an ambulance?" someone called.

But as if on cue, Valerie's eyes fluttered open and focused on me. "Soda?"

"Oh thank God," I sighed, grabbing her and kissing her until she started to giggle.

"Guys, there are children here," Dallas grumbled, motioning to Pony and Johnny.

They rolled their eyes. "Dal, you do know I'm only a year younger than you, right?" Johnny asked.

Dally laughed and ruffled Johnny's hair. "I forget sometimes."

Val mustered up the strength to laugh. "We're taking you to the hospital," I told her, lifting her to her feet.

"I'm alright, honest," she replied quietly, brushing off her skirt.

"Don't be crazy, you almost got knifed out there!" Dallas retorted, lighting a cancer stick.

"What?" I cried, looking at her.

"I'm fine, I swear. Just take me home," she whimpered, hugging me. I think she was more scared than anything.

She grabbed my hand and we walked to my car. Valerie was draped over me and almost in tears.

Dally, Johnny, and Ponyboy ran to catch up with us.

"Thank you guys," Valerie mumbled, and stopped to hug Johnny and Pony.

After a few seconds of deliberation, she reached over to hug Dally too.

He tensed for a second, and then accepted it.

"No sweat, shortie," he replied.

"Soda, I'm going with Johnny, okay? Darry says it's alright," Pony told me.

"Okay, kiddo," I said.

I looked over at Dally, who was picking up his heater off the ground and walking towards us.

He raised it and pointed it at my foot, and pulled the trigger.

Val and I inhaled sharply, but it wasn't out of pain. Nothing came out.

"It's empty," Valerie analyzed.

"It ain't ever loaded, but it sure does hold a bluff," he replied with a smirk.

-

Valerie stared out the window on the drive home, watching the pinpricks of light shine on the vast sky.

"And you're one hundred percent sure you don't need a doctor?"

"Yeah, Soda. I'm fine."

We pulled into the driveway and I looked over at her. She was staring at me.

"Soda, do you know why I came to The Dingo?" her quiet voice asked.

"Why?"

She sniffled. "A girl, on the phone. She laughed when I said I was your girl and said you were busy."

Putting my head in my hands, I crashed back into my seat. "She's the reason you're hurt? Val, you have to believe me. I didn't... that waitress was all over me and-".

I didn't know what was happening until I couldn't hear my voice anymore.

Then I felt her soft lips on mine. "I believe you," she whispered. When I smiled, she continued. "You're always there for me, you're always gonna be by my side. I just know."

"I'm gonna marry you, Valerie Cook." The words flew out of my mouth before I thought about them.

Val grinned and kissed me again. I got out of the car and carried her inside, bridal style.

Pony wasn't home, so I took her into my room again.

We laid down in my bed and she snuggled up next to me, her head on my chest.

"I can't believe I actually thought you were cheating on me."

"Why would I cheat on the perfect girl?" I replied kissing her forehead. She beamed up at me and kissed me harder than she ever had.

"Is Pony coming home tonight?" She asked me.

"Doubt it."

"Darry here?"

"No, he's out."

"Good."
