It was mid day when the pogues were on the boat with the scuba gear that John B had stolen.
Meave and Kiara were looking at the tanks, making sure that they had air so they could dive safely.
"Hey uh John B" Meave called, turning around looking at him. "These are empty."
"What do you mean?" John B asked her.
"This is empty." Kiara said, pointing to the air tank. "You took empty tanks." She sighed.
John B looked at her, not knowing what to say.
"Oh my fucking god.." Meave sighed, putting her face in her hands.
Kiara picked up another valve and looked at the pressure, "Okay this one is about a quarter full." Kiara said to them. "Should be enough for one of us."
"Love it when the plan comes together." Pope commented from behind the wheel.
Meave looked at them in disbelief, "John B why didn't you check the tanks?"
"I didn't have time for that Meave, I could get fired for this." John B fired back at her.
"Okay does anyone know how to dive?" Kiara asked, ignoring the two.
"It's kind of a kook sport." JJ mumbled.
Kiara sighed, looking at Pope.
"I uh I read about it.." Pope muttered.
"Great, so we're screwed." Meave said, putting her hands up in the air.
"Okay look, you put the thing in your mouth and breathe." JJ unsurely said. "How hard can it be?"
"Okay JJ so can you dive?" Meave turned towards him with her hands on her hips.
JJ sighed and looked away.
JJ looked at Pope, "Uh pope.. so what are the dangers?"
"Well," Pope started, "If you come up to fast, nitrogen gets into your blood, and you get the bends."
"Bends?" Meave asked.
"Bends like bend over and.." JJ started, holding onto the railing of the boat and starting to bend over.
"The bends kill you." Pope deadpanned at him.
"Right.."
"I can... I can dive." John B suggested to them.
"You can dive." JJ replied. "I'm cool with that."
"Since when can you dive?" Kiara asked him.
"It's fine, I'll do it." John B said to her.
"Let me do some calculations real quick." Pope sighed.
"Okay Pope, lay it on us." Meave joked, looking at him.
"Okay so the boats about 30 ft down." Pope started to explain, doing the math in his notebook. "So it'll take 25 minutes at the depth. Which means you need to make your safety stop at about.. ten feet. All right? For two minutes."
"Yeah Yeah. Ten feet, two minutes. Got it." John B replied, nodding at him.
Meave looked up and realized that Kiara took up her shirt and jumped into the water. "Uh what..?" She looked around in confusion.
"What was that all about?" Pope asked.
"I don't know." JJ said, looking into the water where Kiara jumped. "But I liked it, I liked it a lot."
"Same" Meave agreed with him.
"Okay uh anyways." JJ started. "So when your down there, you look for the cargo hold." He said to John B. "You stick this thing inside, and twist and pull, okay?"
"Stick in, twist, pull." John B repeated him.
"Yeah." JJ confirmed. "My dad moved weight back in the day."
"Who didn't?" Pope asked while Meave was still looking out in the water for Kiara.
"Hey!" Kiara exclaimed, coming up from the water. "I tied my T-shirt to the anchor chain about ten feet down. That's where you need to do your safety stop."
"Cool" John B replied, starting to put on the scuba gear.
"By the way, if we get caught in the mash we're basically screwed, so better get a move on." Pope told John B.
John B nodded "Mhm, copy that."
John B was about to pull down his mask, when Kiara stood up, walking over to him and kissing his cheek. "Diver down?" She asked.
"Diver down." John B confirmed, pulling down the mask and jumping into the water.
Kiara sat down and pulled her legs up to her chest. Everyone was sitting, waiting for John B to resurface.
Meave was trying to calm her nerves. He only had a little bit of air, and she was worried.
Her nerves didn't calm down, but instead went up when she heard a police siren.
"Shit." Pope cursed when he saw the boat coming towards them.
"Guys that's the cops." JJ commented, looking at the boat.
"Yeah no shit JJ." Meave said to him, standing up.
"Damn it." Pope said, pitting his palm to his temple.
"Yep that's the police." JJ confirmed as the boat got closer.
"Just act frickin normal guys." Kiara hissed, pulling her arms down from her legs, trying not to look suspicious.
"Evening officers." Pope said as they reached the HMS Pogue.
"Evening." Shoupe said in a bored manner.
"JJ tie that off." Pope told him, passing the rope to him.
"How you kids doing?" Shoupe asked them, pulling off his sunglasses. "You know the marsh is closed?"
"No."
"No wow."
"We didn't know that.
"Why- why is it closed?" Pope asked.
"We're conducting a search out here, boat went down." Shoupe told them.
"Oh." Meave mumbled.
"Seen anything?" Shoupe asked.
"Nope."
"No boats, no."
Meave looked down at the water, but quickly looked back up, hoping Shoupe didn't see.
"Say uh.." Shoupe started. "Where's your friend you always hang out with? He here?"
"No uh he had work." Kiara lied.
Shoupe didn't seem convinced as he looked at them.
"I'm gonna check your little boat out." Shoupe said, climbing over and getting onto the boat.
"Yeah hop aboard." JJ said, as Shoupe looked around.
"You wanna check.. uh check her out." Pope stuttered nervously. Him and JJ moved out of Shoupe's way so he could look.
"Thanks." Shoupe muttered.
Meave was watching the scene nervously. Cops always made her nervous, especially now that John B was under that water and has no clue what was going on.
Shoupe went to the edge of the boat and looked down at the water. Meave prayed that John B wouldn't suddenly pop out.
A few seconds later, Shoupe decided he looked around enough. "Alright looks like everything is in order." He said and nodded, as he went back over to his own boat with the other deputy.
"Beautiful day isn't it?" Shoupe asked them.
"Sure is." JJ said to him.
"Yeah it's amazing." Meave replied.
"You kids let me know if you see anything on your way out." Shoupe told them as he got ready to leave.
"Will do." Pope replied, saluting the officer.
"We'll be gone soon sir." JJ said, as Meave nodded.
"Yes you will." Shoupe said, starting the boat and leaving.
"Oh my fucking god." Meave sighed, sitting back down.
