If you were to get the chance to see your potential future with someone, would you?
Y/n had been so excited to get to go to study abroad with all their friends. Including their girlfriend, Kang Haerin.
Unfortunately, yet miraculously, Y/n happened to miss their flight.
Which.... saved their life.
The plane Y/n was supposed board with all their friends, with their teachers, and most importantly with their girlfriend, Haerin.... it crashed into the ocean.... and no survivors were ever found.
- Y/N POV -
"보고 싶다 (I Miss You)," I whispered to the picture in my hand.
I always carried a picture of Haerin in my wallet.
Ever since the plane crash.... I always made sure to carry her picture with me. It brought me comfort and I felt like I could live on my life as long as she was with me in some way.
Today was my university graduation day.... and I need Haerin's picture with me now more than any other day.
It was scary.
It's was scary to think that now that I'm gonna graduate.... and I have to really move on.
Everyone always gave me the "excuse" that I was still a student... to not move on from losing my girlfriend... from losing my friends... and my teachers.
I was the lone survivor....
It killing me inside...
But I was supposed to move on.
Society just told me to move on.
"Congratulations!!"..... "YESSS, YOU'LL BE A PILOT SOON!!!"..... All of my peers cheers as I lowered my head on my way out of my graduation.
Yes, I was to become a pilot.
I choose this career path out of fear. I was afraid that one day family members couldn't get to see their loved ones or that lovers wouldn't ever reunite or that children's cries would echo through the cabin of a plane as the very same plane descend to their very own death.
I was scared and angry. I was ready to show the world how a plane should be flown.
Haerin's plane... the captain... he was at fault. He wanted to flirt and show off. He let an untrained, unauthorized person into the cockpit.... and... his negligence cost lives.
The official accident report recorded that the captain of the plane had brought in an individual, untrained and unauthorized, into the cockpit to fly the plane. The individual then took the seat of the captain and accidentally disengaged the autopilot. The unauthorized individual then began to play with the steering wheel and the plane began to nose dive within second.
All of the people I loved.... they lost their lives in that flight.
Everything was okay and all of a sudden... they were dead.
The plane crashed straight into the ocean.
Even after months of rescue efforts..... no survivors were ever found...... just debris and part of the plane itself.
The sick part was that there was footage found... of the untrained individual... bragging that they got to fly the plane.
"Are you okay? Are you nervous?" My first officer asked me.
My life was like this......
My memory was mostly like this.... just random times of consciousness... the rest was just blacked out.
I was just going through the motions of life.
My first ever flight as a captain was a flight from South Korea to Florida in America.
After years of training and collecting flight hours, I finally got the chance to go to the country that I had once gotten the chance to go to when I was just a child.
"Captain, we're coming into the Bermuda Triangle," My first officer informed me.
We had been flying for hours now.
I chuckled at his remark and said, "Don't be scared now. It's just a myth. Radio the control tower and let them know that there might be a delay due to the impending weather. "
We were flying into the myth that was the Bermuda Triangle. The weather was a bit strange. It was raining heavily.
One of the coolest things about being a pilot... was being able to see the clouds and it's conditions.
The cloud we were to fly into were grey and rainy.
After radioing in our status report, We flew into the weather we had expected.
All of a sudden....
Thunder and extremely winds greeted us.
"Capetian, we're losing altitude!" My first officer yelled.
"I know! I know!" I yelled in a panic.
I followed my training and pulled my steering wheel up, along with my lever.
The plane stabilized a bit....
When all of a sudden...... we saw a bright white light before our eyes.
It looked like the sun had just exploded or something.
My eyes were burning and I held on to the steering wheel as tight and steady as I could... and... all of a sudden...
"Hey, are you okay? Did you have a safe flight here?" I was greeted by a stewardess.
"Y/n-ah, oh my god. You scared me!" Haerin-ah exclaimed.
I jolted up from the plane floor and felt my heart race in fear and excitement.
"Haerin-ah!!" I jumped into Haerin's arms.
Haerin just awkwardly giggled but hugged me back as tightly as she could.
"We're here!" Haerin exclaimed.
"Yes, I can see that!" I unknowingly remarked.
We then all started to unload the plane.
The whole time I could feel my brain banging against my skull.
I looked down at my feet and could see the uniform I was wearing. I could feel the excitement in the air. I felt so alive and so excited to start my life.
"Did you think that's how she felt?" A voice suddenly asked me.
I turned to look and I was greeted by the face of an old man. He seemed like he hadn't slept in ages. He looked very serious and very angry.
"I was brought here by immense grief. The grief worth killing yourself for," The man spoke angrily.
"Okay?" I chuckled a bit.
I had no idea what was going on.
As far as I knew, I was just a kid that had just arrived to America for some international studies.
Suddenly, the man took my wrist and dragged me with him.
I was transported into my high school graduation.
"You see that? You both met at the end of the stairs were you first kissed her. She kissed you first this time.... do you know why?" The old man asked.
I was a bit confused but I remember how on our first year... I was the first of us to peck Haerin on the lips.... before I even asking her out.
Suddenly, another bright light moment happened and I found myself on my first day of college.
"Ohh there you are! I thought you'd get here late!" I heard a familiar voice exclaimed. I then suddenly felt a hand interlock with mine....
It was Haerin.
"You're so cold! We should get you some heat packs!" She cutely exclaimed as we walked into our news school campus, hand in hand.
The bright light began again and I was confused.... I wanted to spend more time with Haerin....
"Congratulations, Pilot!" I heard Haerin said as we walked out of my graduation ceremony.
I laughed and hugged her.
"Thank you so much for being there for me!" I exclaimed as I picked her up to twirled her around the room.
It was in that moment, that I realized..... I wasn't actually living all these moments.
It was all some sort of fantasy or a delusion I was having.
Haerin knew that I wanted to be a veterinary. I wanted to take care of horses and cows and dogs and animal.... because I they were the alternative to having kids.
Yea, we were young.
And just like any young couple......
We fantasized and talked about kids, about our future.
"You'd be great parent. Even if all our kids are animals," Haerin always told me.
"So," a deep voice said.
I was suddenly dragged into this cold and dark room. There was a circle around with many buttons and some sort of library surrounding us.
"Do you think that's how she felt?" The man asked.
"I'm not sure," I answered.
"But you became a pilot out of revenge, right?" The old man asked.
I thought about it for a second and then took a deep breath. "Why do you ask?" I asked him.
"You're in this plane.... upset and with immense grief. What's to stop you from plummeting down this plane in the very same spot your girlfriend died?" The man began to taunt a little.
I angrily walked up to the man's face.... and I was back in the cockpit.
"Captain, are you tired?" My first officer asked.
"Yes," I answered him. I was being a responsible pilot.... knowing I wasn't feeling conscious enough to fly.
To feel better, I went to my captain quarters and laid on my bed. I needed to rest a bit before we landed at our destination.
Suddenly.....
The old man I had seen in my brain...
appeared....
"Ready to go on a crazy drive?'" He excitedly exclaimed.
I looked at him confused before I was dragged through a white mist in my room.
I was then taken back to that day.... the day... the day she died....
"I'm coming. I'm running! I promise I'll be there, you know me and I'll always be there!" A person yelled as they ran through the airport.
I shed a tear.
I was seeing myself.
"I'm right there! Almost there. Don't let that plane take off!" My younger self yelled as I tried to get through my plane terminal.
I was suddenly transported to the inside of the plane.
"Ahhhhhhh~" There was some sort of roar or groan echoing through the plane.
It was Haerin.
"My stomach hurts! Do we have any medicine here?! Let me get some medicine or I will have to walk out of the plane!" Haerin dramatically yelled to the stewardess and teachers.
I could see that she was trying to delay the plane for me.
"Your wife was sweet, huh?" The old man suddenly leaned in to ask.
"Wife?" I questioned.
The white light that kept blinding me suddenly returned, I was then suddenly put into a living room.
There was children running around.
There was Haerin's favorite candles all around the room. They were lit and filling up the room with her favorite smell. She was cooking.
"Did you mow the lawn like I asked?" Haerin-ah asked.
"Yes, baby!" I exclaimed with a giggle before walking up to the kitchen to try to hold her waist as she cooked.... but I was suddenly taken back into the plane's cockpit.
"What do you think?" The old man asked.
I took a deep breath.
"I think that I wish I would have died with her," I lowly answered.
"If I sent you back in time.... what would you do?" The old man asked.
"I'd die with her," I answered.
"Excuse me?" My first officer suddenly asked.
"Sorry, I was running through our safety check list. I want to make sure this terrible weather doesn't get the best of us!" I abruptly answered.
To be honest, my tongue kept speaking without direction.
I would wake up from the bright light and be confused.... but then suddenly... I would talk.
To my surprise, I was suddenly taken back in time to see what actually happened to the plane.
"MAYDAY! MAYDAY!" A distraught captained radioed into the Miami air tower just seconds before the plane clashed.
The old man suddenly appeared in front of my eyes again..... "you can either save her or you can save yourself....," he asked.
I chuckled .
"You're joking right?" I asked in anger.
"If she lives..... you never have kids. You die before she does. You die.... you pick her back up from her abroad studies and you get in a car crash," the old man answers.
I snickered, "Okay?"
I thought he was just joking or being the movie style angel that shows the main character their future or their past... if the main character would have....
Whatever you get it.
"Don't laugh. If she dies... so do your children," The old man coldly said.
"What?!" I asked in confusion.
"Haerin.... she.... she's.... I didn't show you what your future would have been like for no reason," The old man seem to stuttered.
"Chose, I can't stay for much longer. So, just chose," the old man seem irritated.
"CHOOOOSEEEE!!" The old man yelled.
"Her.... even if what you say is true... about my future children..... even if it's just to manipulation me.... even if you're saying this as a lie to comfort me.... it's her. Save her," I answered him in a pained voice.
"That's a lie," the old man suddenly responded.
The old man seem angry.
"Tell me what your heart says!!!" The old man yelled.
"HERRR!!! YOU STUPID FUCK!!! HERRR!!" I screamed at the top of my lungs.
"What if I told you her death was a fixed point in time. She has to die for more important things to happen?" The old man calmly asked.
"THEN TAKE ME WITH HER!!!!!" I screamed in his face.
Suddenly, my eyes went blind.
Not with the white bright light I had been seeing..... but with a dark and black scene.
"I will love you and our kids, very very much. Even in the after life...." Haerin whispered to me as we reached for each other's hands..... squeezing each other's hands in fear.
Haerin's emergency face mask malfunctioned and I mine didn't.
I grabbed my face mask in hopes that everything would be okay.... In fear that everything the old man had shown me was real.
I gave my mask to Haerin and held her hand tightly.
I could see us descending at a very high speed. I saw the ocean outside my window and suddenly....
Everything turned white.
"You came!" A sweet voice greeted.
I turned in the direction of the voice and my heart sank to my stomach.
It was Haerin.
"Oh my god! I missed you so much!" I ran up to hug her.
"I missed you too!" Haerin sniffled as she hugged me back tightly.
"But..... you can't be here," Haerin suddenly whispered in my ear as I put her down.
I pulled away and looked at her confused.
"It's not your time yet," Haerin said as I felt my heart began to break.
"I don't care, I just want to be with you!" I answered her with a pained voice.
"Chose her and everyone in your plane dies," The old man from before suddenly appeared.
"Are you god or something?" I asked the old man annoyed.
I had become tired of his games.
"I'm the doctor. I help those struggling in times of need and loneliness," The old man answered me.
"Don't chose me," Haerin suddenly spoke up.
"If you do that, you'd die..... and so will everyone on that plane.... The plane you're flying it now," Haerin whispered as she walked up to caressed my cheeks.
I could feel tears rolling down my eyes at this point.
"I don't care. I just want to be with you. I miss you so much," I answered her as I took Haerin's hands in mine and kissed them in desperation.
"Don't make me go back," I cried.
"Y/n-ah, my sweet little troublemaker.... I'm not going to go anywhere. I'll be right here waiting for you," Haerin whispered as she cupped my face in her hands.
"You and I, we'll reunite and when we do.... we'll get to do all the things we ever wanted to do together. We'll get our own place, we'll get married and have kids, and we'll live the rest of our lives together," Haerin whispered.
I could see that Haerin to was beginning to cry too.
"Please don't make me go back," I begged.
Haerin just sniffled as began to wipe my tears away.
"If you back, we'll get to be together in the afterlife. If you don't.... we'll be stuck here forever. We'll wonder around as lost souls," Haerin explained.
"If you stay, Haerin has chosen to give up her afterlife to be a lost soul with you," The old man suddenly spoke up.
"What?" I asked in confusion.
"Ms. Kang, she has made a choice to give up her comfortable afterlife to be with you. You have the choice to stay if you'd like.... to die with her on that day....," The old man began to explain.
"But if you go back.... you can save that plane and reunite with her when your time comes. You get to live all those memories I showed you. You get to have kids and live a happily ever after," The old man finished off.
Haerin began to caress my cheeks again.
"If you go back. We get to be together forever. We will get married and have kids and I will love you and our kids, very very much. We'll live in a farm with all the animals you can ever imagine. Our days will never end and we'll never have to miss each other ever again. All you have to do is chose to go back," Haerin whispered as she wiped my tears away.
"Okay," I said in defeat.
Suddenly, I felt Haerin's lips on mine.
My whole soul felt like a heavy weight had been lifted.
"I love you," I heard a voice echo through my head.
"Captain, we're losing altitude!" I heard my first officer yell.
"I know, I know!" I yelled back as I pulled my steering wheel all the way up.
"Pull!" I yelled at my first officer.
My first officer seemed too in shock to do his job right.
I had never believed in the myth of the Bermuda Triangle. It all just seemed like tales or extreme weather conditions to me.
But after that day..... I would never doubt it again.
"We're stabilizing!" My first officer exclaimed with a sigh of relief as we managed to get the plane to an appropriate height.
Suddenly, the skies became clear and we could see our destination straight ahead.
"Sorry for the crazy turbulence. We will be arriving in just 20 minutes. Welcome all to Miami, Florida!" I said over the intercom.
You could hear all the passengers in the plane cheering.
Not long after, we landed our plane safely and without any issues.
After investigation, there was no way to explain why we lost altitude. The plane was well maintained and there was no human errors made.
I seemed to be the only one to remember going to my captain quarters to try to rest. To my whole crew, I was in the cockpit the whole time.
We were flying just fine and all of a sudden when we flew into the rainy clouds we started to lose altitude.
"Captain, you ready to fly once again?" My first officer asked as we boarded our plane back home.
"I'm as ready as ever," I answered as I looked the picture of Haerin in my hand.
