When a teenager gets left all alone at the beginning of an apocalypse and picked up by a small group.
Leo Campbell was always more reserved, quite. He didn't have much people to talk to, he could have, but he pushed them all way. The boy was raised in a small house only to know yelling and anger, he pretended it wasn't happening, that it didn't happen. It was the easiest way to deal with it.
But Leo couldn't run from it. Not when his body was littered with the caverns of long ago torment. The marks that always reminded him of the cane cracking over and over against his young body. Not when he lay awake at night haunted by the look in his dying dads eyes as Leo raised a gun to his head... Not when he found himself not being able to kill the man who had ruined his life.
Every day Leo put up an act, a false front to the people in camp. No one would ever know, he had to be strong. He had to grow up.
But when a red neck gives him a shirt to cover his scars... Leo finds his heart latching on to the simple act, someone understood him, someone knew him without him having to say anything. Daryl Dixon seen him, when no one else could. And Leo latched on, not letting go for the life of him. And Daryl found peace in it too, happy to have the boy follow him around.

Thought I should clarify because I think people are getting the wrong idea. Daryl and Leo's relationship is like a fatherly/brotherly dynamic. They are not together, that would be weird considering Leo is a child.
