back in la, june was roaring for the dodgers. vanessa was having so much fun as the vibes on the team were unmatched. she didn't really wanna do much for her birthday, but considering who she was friends with, that wasn't going to happen. they definitely had something planned. cody came into her office, with a note.
"here." he said putting the note on her desk.
"what is this?" she said looking at the paper.
"just read it!"
"i don't trust you."
"please!" cody begged sliding to closer to her.
"fine." vanessa picked up the note and started to read it aloud. "clue 1: i have a neck but no head, yet can still wear a cap." she looked at cody. "you know i hate riddles."
he smiled, "what do you think it is?"
"a water bottle?"
"where do we keep them?" she made an annoyed face at him and got up to head to the clubhouse.
she opened the refrigerator to see loads of waters and a another note. vanessa read it aloud, "clue 2: wanna get better? hit me now or never!"
cody smiled and let her think. "i came up with that one." he said proudly.
"is it you? i'd really like to hit you right about now." he laughed at her.
"no!"
"batting cages?" cody nodded and followed her around.
as she entered the cages, there was a note left on the plate. she read, "I have a plate but I don't have food eaten off me. I have several bases but I'm not the military. I make people happiest when they get home but I'm not a dog. I have a diamond but I don't glint. I have people on deck but I'm not a ship." she rolled her eyes. "the field?"
cody's smile grew as she figured it out. together, they headed out to the field. as they arrived, the rest of the players and staff were outside. there were balloons everywhere, and lots, and lots of bottles of wine.
"happy birthday!" the crowd yelled. she laughed and gave cody a hug.
"how did you manage to get everyone out here?"
"it really wasn't that hard, people like you y'know."
vanessa went around and talked to her friends for a while. she thought this was the surprise, but there was one other thing that some boys had in mind. mookie, trea, cody and gavin pulled her off to the side away from everyone.
"we have one more thing." cody said smiling.
"what could be better than all the free alcohol im getting?" vanessa laughed.
"trust us," mookie said.
"do i have to work for this one?"
"no," gavin said.
"okay, what is it then?"
the boys paused for a moment
"we all got tickets to 21 savage tonight!" trea said excitedly.
"what?!" vanessa yelled. "for real?!" she was practically beside herself.
he nodded with a smile. vanessa forgot all that was around her and kissed him. cody and mookie stood there shocked as they watched their best friends. gavin smiled and put his hand over his mouth. vanessa pulled away and realized that she wasn't alone.
"shit." vanessa looked around
"what? when? how? why?" mookie said confused.
"are you really that surprised?" cody replied to mookie's shock, to which he shook his head.
"don't say anything." trea threatened them.
"wait.. you knew?!" cody pointed at gavin.
"maybe," he said.
"how come he gets to know?" mookie added, annoyed.
"does it matter? you all know now!" vanessa said, frustrated and angry.
"its not that big a deal, ness. we're all happy for you!" cody replied.
"cody, anyone could've seen that! they're all standing right there!"
"no one saw ness, you're good!" mookie said trying to ease her nerve.
"no, i gotta go." she said before she quickly headed to her car.

after a few minutes of sitting in her car, trea opened the passenger door and sat down.
"hey, you okay?" he asked.
"yeah," vanessa sighed.
"talk to me." trea insisted.
"this was a bad idea, all of it, and its my fault."
"of course its not,"
"yeah, its your fault for being absolutely irresistible." vanessa put her head on his shoulders.
"sorry." trea laughed.
"if anyone saw that, im a goner."
"i really don't think anyone did, ness. plus, no one would snitch on you, everyone loves you to death."
"what if dave saw?"
"he didn't."
"how can you be sure?"
"because he was too busy trying to figure out how to take a picture of tyler and his wife."
"did he say that?"
"no, but he posted this picture on instagram with the caption 'thanks coach d for the photo!' "
vanessa sighed as trea rubbed her hair.
"you stress yourself out too much." he assured her.
"i know,"
the two sat together for a bit longer, just having small talk to make vanessa feel better. after a bit they were ready to get back inside.

"did you know 21 liked my instagram post one time?" vanessa said as the 5 walked up to the venue.
"really?" gavin asked.
"yep! were basically dating!" they laughed.
the group headed into the venue, stopping to say hi to a few fans on the way.

the show was incredible. it was unlike anything the five had ever seen. and much louder.
as vanessa got home for the night, she ripped her heels off and quickly changed into some cozy pjs.
she got a chance to call her brother for a bit, even though it was so late. she caught him up on her life and promised to call him more often.
when she finished, she flopped down inter her bed, feeling much better than she did that day.
and the next day, she would wake up with one of the worst hangovers of her life.
