  /pɛtrʌɪkɔ/

(n.) the scent of rain on dry earth.

   ●●●

I asked for you on rainy days.

   ●●●

It was a quiet Tuesday morning.

Little dews of moisture slid down Aaron's window as he watched them roll down, before many others joined; almost racing down his window.

The air seemed tense today, almost suffocating as Aaron thought.

He was going to miss school today.

It was something inevitable, something that he knew had to happen.

He needed to see his brother.

His blue eyes glanced at the morning rain outside, wondering whether one day, he too, could be a rain drop.

Falling down from the heights of the heavens, a rain drop always sounds like some angelic - utterly sacred as it descended onto the Earth.

He shook his head - he knew he never was going to be one.

H̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶s̶t̶i̶l̶l̶ ̶t̶h̶i̶n̶k̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶R̶o̶s̶e̶.̶ ̶

Aaron was always queasy when this time of the year came around, disturbing his mental state almost a week before -what he might do was probably illegal too- but somehow, this year his mind seemed less disturbed.

B̶e̶c̶a̶u̶s̶e̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶R̶o̶s̶e̶.̶ ̶

It was never something new for Aaron to be thinking, but it was something interesting when he was thinking of someone.

S̶h̶e̶ ̶c̶o̶u̶l̶d̶n̶'̶t̶ ̶l̶e̶a̶v̶e̶ ̶h̶i̶s̶ ̶m̶i̶n̶d̶.̶ ̶

Remembering her warm gaze send a rush of warmth through him, loosening the tight knots in his gut while calming his racing heart.

H̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶g̶o̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶m̶i̶s̶s̶ ̶h̶e̶r̶.̶ ̶

And he thought of Rose - he really did.

He thought on how she was going to be alone in English today, and how she wasn't going to have anyone to talk to in Literature and Chemistry, a̶n̶d̶ ̶h̶o̶w̶ ̶h̶e̶ ̶w̶o̶u̶l̶d̶n̶'̶t̶ ̶b̶e̶ ̶a̶b̶l̶e̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶s̶e̶e̶ ̶h̶e̶r̶.̶ ̶

Rose was indeed a mystery he could never unravel, but somehow thinking of her always seemed to make his mind less...catastrophic.

He could never seem to wrap his brain around the little blonde, wondering what her thoughts were, and even questioned whether he would ever be able to understand what her eyes were whispering to the world around them.

Aaron then glanced at the clock, 9 am, it read and Aaron thought he still had a few more hours before he had to go.

He knew the ride alone was going to take about 3 hours, and then there was 45 minutes to wait for classes to be over, so Aaron obviously still had a lot of things to take care of before he left.

Luke already handled the case of getting a car since the only one who had one was Aiden, and Aaron was in desperate need of one, Luke did it for him.

Aaron would never understand how Luke did it, but he somehow always seemed to pull it off every year, and Aaron was grateful - immensely grateful to him.

He knew he could tell Luke what was wrong, not that he didn't trust the other guys, but he knew Luke would understand.

H̶e̶ ̶h̶a̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶b̶e̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶j̶u̶d̶g̶e̶d̶.̶ ̶

Luke knew Aaron well - not well enough like the back of his hand, but perhaps he knew Aaron like the tips of his fingers ; subtle and smooth.

And Aaron always liked to think that when this time of the year came around, Luke would always leave before he wakes up, knowing that Aaron would like to be alone to think.

Aaron grasped onto the handle of his cup more tightly as his blue eyes flickered to the clock, and he quietly got up and went to get ready.

It was 11 am.

✕✕✕

Aaron let out a little sigh as he honked his horn again, gritting his teeth the further he looked at the traffic ahead.

He had no idea why there was this much traffic at 1 in the afternoon, and it was bundling his nerves in anxiety as he slowly moved.

It never occurred to him on how cool the Canadian air was, whipping his hair from side to side as he passed along high ways, tickling his arm on the steering wheel as he drove.

Aaron has been driving for about 2 and a half hours now, and he was slowly going to lose his patience.

But he didn't.

B̶e̶c̶a̶u̶s̶e̶ ̶h̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶t̶h̶i̶n̶k̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶h̶e̶r̶.̶ ̶

Rose always seemed to calm him down, allowing the traffic not to bother his mind too much, because h̶e̶ ̶m̶i̶s̶s̶e̶d̶ ̶h̶e̶r̶ whining over traffic wasn't worth it.

S̶h̶e̶ ̶s̶o̶o̶t̶h̶e̶s̶ ̶h̶i̶s̶ ̶m̶i̶n̶d̶.̶ ̶

His grip on the steering wheel loosened as he exhaled a small breath, running a hand through his hair as he took a gulp of his water.

Aaron had only made a few pit stops here and there, whether it was to buy a small pack of crisps, or even a bottle of water or use the toilet, that was pretty much the only reason he left the car.

Aaron suddenly felt his phone beep in his pocket.

He let out a breath, if it was Luke asking-

H̶e̶ ̶c̶o̶u̶l̶d̶n̶'̶t̶ ̶b̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶e̶,̶ ̶h̶e̶ ̶c̶o̶u̶l̶d̶n̶'̶t̶ ̶b̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶e̶,̶ ̶h̶e̶ ̶c̶o̶u̶l̶d̶n̶'̶t̶ ̶b̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶e̶.̶ ̶

He stared down at the text he has just reached while h̶i̶s̶ ̶h̶e̶a̶r̶t̶ ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶r̶a̶c̶i̶n̶g̶, his grip on the steering wheel tightened.

W̶a̶r̶m̶t̶h̶,̶ ̶w̶a̶r̶m̶t̶h̶,̶ ̶w̶a̶r̶m̶t̶h̶.̶ ̶

And perhaps it was then that Aaron thought that we didn't need actions to show care.

We didn't need to hold each others hand all the time, or to pat one's shoulder constantly to gesture ones presence or support.

One could use words.

The combination of simple letters, but yet, they seem to make the biggest impact on Aaron's heart.

H̶e̶ ̶m̶i̶s̶s̶e̶d̶ ̶h̶e̶r̶.̶ ̶

Because when he looked again at the text she sent him, and at the concern her words were whispering, he knew she cared.

A̶n̶d̶ ̶h̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶s̶o̶ ̶h̶a̶p̶p̶y̶,̶ ̶s̶o̶ ̶h̶a̶p̶p̶y̶,̶ ̶s̶o̶ ̶h̶a̶p̶p̶y̶.̶ ̶

He shoved the phone back in his back pocket before he continued driving - he was going to reply to her once he was done with this, o̶t̶h̶e̶r̶w̶i̶s̶e̶ ̶h̶e̶ ̶w̶o̶u̶l̶d̶ ̶n̶e̶v̶e̶r̶ ̶s̶t̶o̶p̶ ̶t̶a̶l̶k̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶h̶e̶r̶.̶ ̶

When Aaron reached Ontario, he knew he had about 5 minutes left until he would see his brother again.

The cool Ontarian air cooled his flushed face, erupting goosebumps on his exposed arms as he drove.

He always admired how beautiful Ontario was at this time of the year, the chilly wind gently brushing against the leaves of trees, and a few humming birds could be seen ; frantically flying as he drove.

Aaron took one last sip of water before he parked the car, right across the entrance of the school. He then unbuckled his seat belt, rubbing his face with his fingers before he got out of the car.

Aaron then walked towards the entrance, his legs headed towards the gigantic iron gate (He reckoned it was about 14 feet tall), his fingers trembling as his nerves knotted themselves everywhere.

H̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶R̶o̶s̶e̶ ̶w̶i̶t̶h̶ ̶h̶i̶m̶.̶ ̶

The gates were big, but they were absolutely beautiful.

The iron gates were ganished with gold plating, the gold and silver swirling in different patterns around the rectangular gates ; making the most beautiful gradient of gold, silver, rose gold and copper.

H̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶t̶h̶i̶n̶k̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶R̶o̶s̶e̶.̶ ̶

Underneath the iron gates were flowerbeds, blooms of life spouting in every colour, in every shape and size, and it was absolutely breathtaking.

They changed the flowers every year, Aaron noticed, but they were always beautiful nevertheless.

J̶u̶s̶t̶ ̶l̶i̶k̶e̶ ̶R̶o̶s̶e̶.̶ ̶

He pushed the gates open with a creak, letting out a little huff of air as he let himself in. He then closed the gate back with as much effort, sighing as he turned towards the entrance of the school.

It was time.

Aaron loosened the collar of red shirt (Obviously cringing) before he exhaled. He knew he couldn't wear black when he came here, he knew they would call him out on that for looking odd from everyone here.

And he desperately couldn't afford to do anything to drive him away now that he has arrived.

Aaron then messed his hair up a bit, running his fingers through his dark hair several times before he took in a small breath and marched right to the entrance.

No matter how many lies Aaron could make up, and how many excuses he could blurt, Aaron couldn't deny that this school was beautiful.

As Aaron entered, he could feel the clean air conditioned mist hit his face, running across his entire body as he moved along. He always took this time to admire how beautifully decorated this school was: with their milky white walls, the gold detailing on the side of the ceiling always seem to stand out to Aaron, along with the multiple large frames of pictures hanging on the streams of milk.

He could feel a small smile tickle his lips as he went along, his blue eyes immediately snapping to the older woman at the reception.

"Hello dear," She said warmly, giving Aaron a small smile as she asked. "is there anything I can do for you young man?" He even noted down the British in her tone.

"Yes," Aaron smiled at her, "you can help me Mrs. Claire." (He read her name off her name tag)

"What can I do for you?" Mrs. Claire smiled, tugging on the ends of her white gloves as she entwined her hands.

Aaron thought Mrs. Claire looked no older than fifty, noticing how her cloud white hair was set in a neat bun on the nape of her neck while her grey eyes held sincerity - honest care.

Aaron gave the elder lady a small smile. "I need to visit Class 2, Sector 5," Aaron said, letting the British accent that he has kept hidden for so long, glide freely across his tongue.

"Very well then," Mrs. Claire said, nodding her head as she adjusted her coat. "Name please."

"Aaron, Aaron DeGarner." Aaron replied, rubbing his hands together in anticipation as Mrs. Claire cocked her eyebrow.

Her gaze then turned soft, her eyes resembling a beautiful grey sky as she said softly. "Are you James DeGarner's brother by any chance?"

Yes

"No, I'm his cousin." Aaron said, the white lie slipping through his lips as it did every year.

"Well what business do you have with him?" Mrs. Claire asked, and Aaron stifled to roll his eyes.

He knew Mrs. Claire was just following protocol, but she was taking more time from him than the last receptionist did last year.

"I have something important to tell him personally," Aaron reasoned, nodding his head in confidence as he added. "It is of utter importance."

Mrs. Claire gave him a small smile, her gentle grey stare making something stir within him as she whispered. "James never gets any visitors, I'm glad you came."

Of course he doesn't.

Mrs. Claire then shuffled with a bunch of papers in her hand, getting off her chair as she told Aaron, "Well you're in luck, I'm already headed to Class 2 Sector 5, so come along."

Aaron nodded his head, stuffing his hands in his pockets as he quietly followed her lead through the halls of the gigantic halls.

Mrs. Claire's heels tapped against the orange granite floors, Aaron's blue stare still glued to the beautiful walls of the school as he walked along.

Mrs. Claire then turned to him, giving him a sad smile as she said. "I'm glad James has someone he could talk with," She said that all with sadness embedded in her eyes. "It's been so long since someone last asked for him."

H̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶c̶r̶y̶.̶ ̶

Aaron set his jaw, both his fists clenched in his jean pockets as he said firmly. "Well I hope he's going to be happy to see me."

Mrs. Claire gave him a wistful smile. "Of course he will be dear, he'll be delighted."

Aaron gave her a tight lipped smile, his eyes stuck to the ground as they walked along the marvelous corridors.

It was at times like this when he couldn't help but think about Rose.

S̶h̶e̶ ̶n̶e̶v̶e̶r̶ ̶l̶e̶f̶t̶ ̶h̶i̶s̶ ̶m̶i̶n̶d̶.̶ ̶

There was just something about her warm gaze that he deeply missed, and another thing about her gentle smile that he yearned for it, yearned for it, yearned for it.

He never thought something as simple as her smile could astound him as much, could swirl around every corner of his thoughts as he walked along.

C̶o̶u̶l̶d̶ ̶m̶a̶k̶e̶ ̶h̶i̶s̶ ̶h̶e̶a̶r̶t̶ ̶a̶ ̶s̶m̶i̶l̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶m̶e̶s̶s̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶h̶i̶s̶ ̶c̶h̶e̶s̶t̶.̶ ̶

"Alright here we are," Mrs. Claire gave Aaron a small smile, her thin lips stretching into a subtle smile. "Just sit there and wait for the children to finish."

He smiled at Mrs. Claire, and he could see her eyes widen at the sight. "Thank you Mrs. Claire," He then saw her shuffle with the papers in her arms, h̶e̶ ̶c̶o̶u̶l̶d̶n̶'̶t̶ ̶h̶e̶l̶p̶ ̶i̶t̶, "Do you wish for me to carry those with you?"

Mrs. Claire smiled as she shook her head, a few wisps of snow white hair settling on the nape of her neck, her eyes shimmering with gratitude. "It's quite alright Aaron, nothing to worry about. I can handle it myself, but thank you for the offer."

Aaron nodded his head, his blue eyes gleaming this breathtaking midnight turquoise. "If you insist."

Mrs. Claire gave him one last smile before she said. "Well I better get going then, these papers aren't going to get themselves delivered." Mrs. Claire turned on her heel and took a few steps away before she turned her head back to Aaron and uttered. "Good luck Aaron," And off she went.

Aaron grimly nodded his head, walking towards the seats right beside the class rooms before he took a seat on one.

He now needed to wait 45 minutes before class was dismissed, and his eyes couldn't help but take in everything around him.

Everything was still the same.

The same pictures were hung on the wall as they were 8 years ago, and the same decorations were put out, except they seemed more shiny and polished than the last time he remembered.

It was hard walking along these halls and not thinking of any memories ; after all, this was his school once too.

He knew almost every path this school had, memorised every shortcut he ever found, and by hearted all the quotes on the wall.

H̶e̶ ̶m̶i̶s̶s̶e̶d̶ ̶R̶o̶s̶e̶.̶ ̶

And Aaron did wait around for the next 45 minutes, his blue eyes mindlessly wandering about the hallways as time seemed to tick.

And then, the bell rang.

It made Aaron jump in his seat, just slightly as the doors to the classroom across him opened.

B̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶e̶,̶ ̶b̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶e̶,̶ ̶b̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶e̶.̶ ̶

Children then started pooling out of the rectangular door - children of all sizes and colour and cultures emerging from that door made Aaron stand on high alert.

His desperate blue gaze kept inspecting every child that passed along, the prayers whispered themselves in his heart as more children passed.

And then, he saw him.

He grew tremendously, at least 6 inches from the last time he saw him, and even his hair grew, but he would know that back pack anywhere.

B̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶e̶,̶ ̶b̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶e̶,̶ ̶b̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶e̶.̶ ̶

Every nerve in his body restricted as he blue gaze met the back of the boy's head, the ball of agony rolling down to his guts as he watched him.

B̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶e̶,̶ ̶b̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶e̶,̶ ̶b̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶e̶.̶ ̶

He seemed glued in place, his breathing becoming shallow as he let out small breaths every now and then, his blue eyes anchored on the boy right across him.

C̶a̶l̶l̶ ̶h̶i̶m̶,̶ ̶c̶a̶l̶l̶ ̶h̶i̶m̶,̶ ̶c̶a̶l̶l̶ ̶h̶i̶m̶.̶ ̶

His vocal cords seemed to tangle themselves together, knotting in the middle of his throat the further he stared.

B̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶e̶,̶ ̶b̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶e̶,̶ ̶b̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶e̶.̶ ̶

He couldn't breathe.

Aaron then wheezed out a small breath, his wide stare still settling on his brother before-

"James!" He tried to say it in the loudest voice he had, but it came out as a small whisper.

But he heard it.

He couldn't breathe, couldn't breathe, couldn't breathe.

James' green eyes widened as he stared at his brother.

And then he smiled.

And Aaron then, fell on his knees.

H̶i̶s̶ ̶h̶e̶a̶r̶t̶ ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶g̶o̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶e̶x̶p̶l̶o̶d̶e̶.̶ ̶

"Aaron!" James then rushed towards Aaron, wrapping his little arms around Aaron's neck as he embraced his elder brother. "I knew you would come!"

"Of course I did," Aaron replied, wrapping his arms around James as he pulled his little brother closer. "We made a promise didn't we?"

James nodded his head against Aaron's shoulder. "Yes,"

James' grip around Aaron tightened, holding his elder brother as though he never wanted to let him go. "I missed you Aaron," He croaked, burying his face deep in Aaron's neck.

Aaron then held his brother tighter, closing his eyes t̶o̶ ̶s̶u̶p̶p̶r̶e̶s̶s̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶t̶e̶a̶r̶s̶ ̶t̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶e̶s̶c̶a̶p̶e̶, before he whispered. "I miss you too James, always."

Aaron could feel moisture on his shoulders now. "Then why did you leave?" James asked, pain embedded in his voice as he spoke. "Why did you leave me all alone?"

H̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶c̶r̶y̶.̶ ̶

"You wouldn't understand James," Aaron said softly, patting James' blonde hair. "You know I wouldn't have left you if I had a choice."

James sniffled, a small whimper escaping his lips as he asked. "Well was your other choice worth it?" James then let go of his brother, wiping away some stray tears as he looked up at Aaron. "Are you happy?"

I̶ ̶f̶o̶u̶n̶d̶ ̶R̶o̶s̶e̶, "Yes," Aaron whispered, noticing how James' emerald stare resembled their mother's so much.

James nodded his head. "Then that's all that matters." He then smiled, revealing a few missing teeth before he said. "I guess I'll be going home a little late today."

Aaron grinned. "Yeah you are. Do you need a phone?"

"That's quite alright Aaron," James grinned, his childish buzz radiating from him again before he reached into his back pocket. "We got walkie talkie for that." He replied, the British rolling off his tongue just like Aaron's.

"Very well then," Aaron nodded his head, watching as James turned the black piece of metal on.

"Hello?" James said into the long rectangular piece of old technology.

"Yes sire, how can I be of service?" Aaron knew that voice.

"I won't be coming home soon George," James was smiling, his cheeks puffing out while his eyes turned excited.

"Is that so sire? And why is that?" George replied, and Aaron could sense the concealed panic in his tone.

James eyes became gentle - almost subtle like the colour of damp mint leaves before he whispered. "It's that time of the year again,"

Aaron heard George wheeze out a breath, immediately clearing his throat as he said. "Is it? Well then, hello there Aaron,"

"Hi George," Aaron replied, slightly smiling. "How have you been?"

"I've been alright boy, same as always. How have you been though?" George asked, a slight edge to his tone. "Have you been eating properly boy? If not, then God so help on what I am going to do to you,"

Aaron let a little laugh slip through his lips. "I'm alright George, nothing to worry about. And yes, I have been eating properly." He hoped that one piece of toast counted as breakfast. "but I still do miss your amazing stir fry."

"I doubt I'd ever stop worrying about you Aaron," George whispered, his voice coming out leached with pain. "It's a pleasure to hear from you again sire."

Tears burned at the back of Aaron's eyes. "George what did I say about calling me-"

"Now go along both of you," George's voice was now loud and clear, filled with joy but Aaron could hear how it slightly quivered. "and do be back before dark."

"Will do George," James smiled, shutting off the walkie talkie as he shoved it back in his pocket. "Now about that ice cream."

And Aaron knew he was smiling.

✕✕✕

"I don't know how you like it," James grumbled as he watched Aaron eat another spoonful of his bright green ice cream. "It's gross." He scowled, shaking his head as he treated himself to another spoon of chocolate.

"We all have preferences James," Aaron said flatly. "and besides, I don't fancy chocolate as much."

"Which I find hard to believe," James said, giving Aaron a weird look. "What kind of monster doesn't like chocolate?"

H̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶l̶a̶u̶g̶h̶, "Me, now shush up and do eat," Aaron's tone was playful, something that always made a smile bloom on James' lips. "the ice cream is melting and I know how much you hate it when that happens."

And James didn't waste a moment before he started stuffing his face with the chocolate, successfully smearing some on the corners of his mouth and upper lip.

And Aaron watched as his little brother smothered the chocolate in his mouth, slightly smiling as he watched him gobble it all down.

James has indeed grown: his hair was almost to the bottom of his ears, curling slightly at the nape of his neck. His shoulders started showing signs of strength, the faint but visible muscle peeking through his thin uniform as he ate.

And Aaron knew that James was growing to be a polished man; with a blemish free complexion, and sharp green eyes, James was indeed making his way to a handsome man.

He was getting the medication he needed.

"You've grown," Aaron said to his brother, watching as James let out a little breath while he put his empty cup of ice cream down.

"Everyone has been saying that," James muttered, annoyance clear in his voice as he continued. "Like what am I suppose to bloody do? Tell my body to stop doing what it is suppose to do?"

"No cussing young man," Aaron said sternly, like he was one to talk.

James let out a little laugh as he took a napkin and wiped his face with it. "So has anything interesting happened to you lately?"

Aaron gave him a look. "Has anything interesting ever happened to me?"

James shrugged. "Just thought you'd have luck this year,"

A ghost of a smile tugged on Aaron's lips. "You're becoming sarcastic too, very delightful."

James grinned. "Innit?"

Aaron chuckled before he shook his head, looking down at his molten pistachio ice cream.

"Please tell me you have made friends other than Luke." James said, sighing as he already saw the answer on Aaron's face.

"Why are you looking me like that?" Aaron asked, shuffling in his seat as he met his brother's weird gaze. "And what is your problem with my friends?"

"The fact that you're my brother and you have no friends disturbs me." James said flatly, quirking an eyebrow to Aaron as though challenging him to deny it.

"Well I did make a few friends," Aaron retorted, taking a gulp of his molten ice cream as he slightly smirked.

James' green eyes widened as he grinned. "Did you? Who?"

A̶ ̶b̶e̶a̶u̶t̶i̶f̶u̶l̶ ̶g̶i̶r̶l̶ ̶c̶a̶l̶l̶e̶d̶ ̶R̶o̶s̶e̶, "Quit being nosy James," Aaron said, smugly smiling as he continued. "It doesn't suit you."

James scowled, rolling his eyes before he muttered. "It's not called being nosy, it's honest curiousity."

Aaron smiled playfully, hitching an eyebrow as he asked. "Is it now?"

James ignored his question. "Well is it a girl?"

A̶ ̶b̶e̶a̶u̶t̶i̶f̶u̶l̶ ̶o̶n̶e̶.̶ ̶

"So what if it is?" Aaron said, giving his brother a weird look.

"Well someone told me that if you're friends with a girl, then you're cool." James reasoned, the confidence spilling out of his tone as he explained.

"Now who on Earth told you that?" Aaron asked, his perplexed blue gaze meeting his brother's bright green one.

"George,"

"Why?"

"Because a girl came up to me and kissed me."

"...."

"...."

"On the cheek?"

"No, on the lips."

"...."

"...."

"Why are you making it sound like the most casual thing ever?" Aaron asked, watching as James just shrugged.

"She did it to my surprise, I wasn't expecting it," James said, his neck already flushing.

Aaron grinned. "I bet you didn't do anything."

James narrowed his eyes at his brother. "I did,"

Aaron shook his head, a sly smile on his lips. "Did you? I bet you don't know a single thing about-"

"I did the fishy face Mom told me to do!" James blurted out, turning a furious shade of magenta as he pondered on the words that slipped his lips.

"The fishy face?" Aaron teased. "I bet she must have enjoyed that,"

"Can we drop the subject?" James said annoyed, burying his burning face in his fingers as he exhaled.

"Why?" Aaron asked, a small smile on his lips. "Ashamed?"

"No!" James cried, pursing his lips as he sent his elder brother a malicious glare. "She said I was great, alright?"

And then Aaron laughed.

It was the very laugh that Rose adored, but it was also a laugh that James never saw.

One where both his dimples would protrude from his cheeks, his blue gaze holding amusement and his perfect chord of laughs slipping through his lips.

Even James seemed shocked, his mouth slightly parting as he witnessed the soft side of his brother; marveling at how beautiful he looked.

"So you did meet a girl," James nodded his head as his green eyes shone. "What's her name?"

"How could you be so sure?" Aaron argued, quirking an eyebrow as he looked at his brother.

"Because you didn't go off topic like you usually do," James said, giving Aaron a cheeky grin. "So, her name?"

Aaron was going to argue some more, but judging from the confident look on James' face, he just sighed. "Rose."

And perhaps James didn't notice, and Aaron didn't realise, but he said it in the softest tone he had.

"Alright then," Aaron said, recomposing himself as he grinned. "Girls are weird aren't they?"

James thought for a while before he shook his head. "No they're not, just a little special." Aaron was smiling. "But it felt weird though."

Aaron grinned, "You're becoming a man now,"

James gave his brother a look before he snickered. "And you'll be one too when you finish your puddle of green ice cream,"

James knew Aaron hated it.

✕✕✕

James buzzed the door bell, the shuffles of foot steps heard on the other side of the door before it gently swayed open - revealing a rather anxious looking George.

"Sire," George said, giving a respectful nod towards James as he opened the door for both of them, but his grey eyes were glued to Aaron.

Both brothers entered the mansion, Aaron mindlessly going in as though he was used to it all but, he wasn't.

It's been so long since he's been here, and he could feel anxiety creep up his spine.

"Aaron," George addressed him, giving him a friendly smile as he closed the door.

James has already removed his coat, going on his tippy toes to hang it on the jacket holder, his nose twitching in determination as he did so.

George smiled at the sight, immediately rushing towards James as he took his jacket and hung it up. "You can always ask me James, it won't bother me either."

James scowled at his failure, shaking his head at George as he muttered. "But I want to do it myself."

George smiled at the 7 year old boy. "You just need to grow a few more inches James, and I doubt that will take any time,"

James sighed before he told Aaron. "I'll just put my shoes away and perhaps even change and be back in a giffy."

He then dashed to the living room, settling himself on one of the arm chairs as he untied his shoe laces, and then peeling the shoes off his feet to reveal white socks.

"He's growing up just like you Aaron," The gentleness in George's voice made Aaron snap his gaze to him. "He hasn't given me his jacket since he turned 6." George said, wrinkles garnishing his aged eyes as he smiled.

Aaron could remember when his silver hair was a jet black, greatly contrasting against his grey eyes as strands of black fell against them.

He even remembered being jealous of how tan George always seemed to be, his grey eyes were always so prominent against anything the man wore, while Aaron was blessed with a rather pale complexion, along with dull blue eyes.

George Martin has served Aaron's family his entire life. He was hired as a butler, but Aaron always thought he was a maid, a cook, a cleaner and perhaps parents bundled up into one human body.

Because for as long as Aaron remembered, George never left him. His persistent efforts to break down the walls Aaron has created have worked, and Aaron cared about the old man deeply.

"Perhaps he's just being kind," Aaron said mindlessly, his blue gaze settling on his little brother, slightly smiling as he watched James struggle with one of the laces.

"Perhaps he is looking up to his elder brother," George replied, grey orbs also setting on James as he continued. "He barely knows his other elder brother."

Aaron stiffened. "That's good, I'd prefer he kept it that way," Aaron said firmly, jaw set as he clenched his fists.

"But you're very brave Aaron," George whispered, his aged eyes glancing at him. "for coming back here." George then adjusted his collar, clearing his throat as he said. "If it were me, I'd never show my face again."

Aaron's gaze softened, looking at George. "It wasn't particularly easy George, but it must be done." James looked healthier. "He is my brother, and nothing will ever change that."

George smiled wistfully. "And that's the beauty of it Aaron, you gave up everything to the boy who already has everything."

Aaron slightly smiled. "That's what brothers do. I know he would do the same for me."

George smiled, his grey eyes becoming glassy as they both watched James neatly put his shoes on the side before the little boy started unbuttoning the buttons of his shirt, heading upstairs as he left to change.

"And he is too young to understand," Aaron said gently, exhaling a small breath. "I never wanted to burden him like this."

"I try to make James as happy as I can," George whispered, his eyes still fixed on the spot James was. "but no matter how many toys you buy him, or how many friends he makes, he always asks for one thing."

Aaron's hands were trembling. "What is it?" He voice shook, quivering with fear as he awaited for George's answer.

"You," George said, his voice barely a whisper as he continued. "To be able to let you come here whenever he wanted, no matter who saw you."

H̶i̶s̶ ̶h̶e̶a̶r̶t̶ ̶s̶t̶a̶r̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶s̶h̶a̶k̶i̶n̶g̶.̶ ̶

James then came back down, dressed in his pajamas with a bunch of toys in his arms, cracking a smile at Aaron and George.

And as Aaron played with his little brother, he looked at George as though telling him Perhaps I will make that wish come true with his eyes.

And it was one promise that Aaron planned on keeping.

✕✕✕

This was the worst part about coming back.

And James knew, watching with a pained stare as Aaron wore his shoes, the emerald stare already becoming glassy.

Aaron could feel his heart clench in his chest, delivering pained blood throughout his entire body as he met his brother's stare.

I̶t̶ ̶h̶u̶r̶t̶s̶ ̶t̶o̶o̶ ̶b̶a̶d̶,̶ ̶t̶o̶o̶ ̶b̶a̶d̶,̶ ̶t̶o̶o̶ ̶b̶a̶d̶.̶ ̶

"James..." Aaron trailed off, watching as James even handed him a spare coat, along with some water and some left over stir fry.

All with tears in his eyes.

It hurt Aaron to see his brother like this, but he knew it had to be done.

James was quiet, the tears swelling up in his eyes before they trickled down his face; James furiously wiping them with the pad of his palm.

Aaron knew James was trying to be strong, his jaw set as his eyes held this determination to not let the tears fall.

But he was only 7, and for a kid to witness his elder brother leaving yet again for another year, was something that could break you.

"Come here," Aaron said, falling to his knees as he opened his arms for the little guy.

James immediately rushed into Aaron's arms, wrapping his own around Aaron as he took multiple breaths, to stifle the sobs threatening to escape his lips.

But when Aaron leaned into James' touch, James couldn't bear it anymore.

It was first tears, the moisture falling onto Aaron's shoulder, before the sobs echoed through the room.

James started ferociously sobbing, pulling Aaron's shirt as he cried, wheezing for breath as he bawled his eyes out.

With a heavy heart, Aaron rubbed James' back soothingly, leaning his head against James'.

There wasn't much Aaron could do, there never was.

James then sniffled, taking in deep breaths as he wiped away his tears. He then let go of Aaron, and just like that, his eyes started filling up with water again.

"Aaron," James croaked, inhaling a fresh whiff of air as he continued. "don't forget to come next year."

H̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶c̶r̶y̶,̶ ̶c̶r̶y̶,̶ ̶c̶r̶y̶.̶ ̶

Aaron's bottom lips quivered as he squeezed his eyes shut, exhaling. "I never will James, I never will."

James nodded his head, the emerald in his eyes glistening brightly underneath the unshed tears. "Good."

Aaron then wrapped his arms again around his little brother, kissing the top of his head as he tried to relish this moment before they would part for another year.

"I hate it when you leave Aaron," James sobbed. "I just feel so lonely here, all alone."

All Aaron could do was listen; listen to the sobs and hushed whispers of his brother.

Sometimes this hurt too much, but Aaron knew better.

It was all for him, all for him.

"Mom and Dad are always busy and away, and sometimes George can be occupied with some work," James whispered, his voice cracking with emotion as he cried in his brother's shoulder. "and I don't want to bother them because I'm just a silly 7 year old who doesn't know half the things they do."

Something in Aaron snapped, shredding in 2 pieces as he listened to James.

He needed to comfort him.

"You're not silly James," Aaron said, his tone confident and gentle. "And sometimes, it is alright if you feels lonely." B̶e̶c̶a̶u̶s̶e̶ ̶I̶ ̶a̶m̶ ̶t̶o̶o̶, "You have my number James," Aaron said softly. "and you know you can call me anytime you want."

James sniffled, laying his head on Aaron's shoulder and whispered. "Mom uses the phone Aaron, she'll know."

And Aaron broke.

Completely shattered underneath his brothers touch, the feeling of multiple knives attacking his spine as he hissed out a breath, his chest shivering in raw pain while he hears his brother's whisper.

"We'll get through this James," Aaron had an edge to his tone, as though he was trying to re-assure himself too. "I promise."

"The next time you come," Aaron couldn't ignore how shaky James' voice was. "I would like for you to bring Rose."

Aaron instantly gave James a weird look, questioning blue eyes staring into James' emerald stare before he asked. "Why?"

James shrugged. "I want to meet her."

He wanted to meet the girl who Aaron talked about with an unknowing smile on his face.

Aaron nodded. "I'll see what I can do." H̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶h̶e̶r̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶m̶e̶e̶t̶ ̶J̶a̶m̶e̶s̶.̶ ̶

"Alright then," Aaron said, getting to his feet. "I have to get going."

Aaron embraced James one last time, ruffling the little guy's hair before he whispered. "Good bye James."

He then turned on his heel and started walking away, picturing James' pine green eyes shimmering with tears, a sad expression on his face as Aaron walked away.

Each step he took became heavier, the pull of gravity intensifying on his toes.

And it hurt.

His entire leg felt numb, as though walking away from his brother was a sin.

James never says goodbye.

Gritting his teeth, Aaron let a groan slip his lips as he looked at the traffic ahead.

H̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶c̶r̶y̶.̶ ̶

James was still lingering in his mind, those emerald eyes were just too beautiful to forget.

Aaron sometimes pondered on whether he did do this all for the best, whether his decision was worth it.

But James was one of the few who could make him reconsider and think again, and it killed him.

He let out a small sigh as he noticed how slow this traffic was going, and Aaron was grateful he left now than later.

H̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶s̶e̶e̶ ̶R̶o̶s̶e̶.̶ ̶

Depression stitched on his heart, pumping itself into his blood stream the further he drove. Slowly his entire mind was under this toxic emotion, making tears swell in his sky blue eyes as he drove.

Something about seeing Rose smile at him, or perhaps laugh at something Aiden has said seemed really comforting now.

It was a small curve of her lips that could drain away all the sadness in his body, and he yearned for it.

And all throughout the 3 hours traffic, he thought of her.

Aaron's limps felt numb as he unlocked his door, demanding rest as he entered his house.

Luke was surprisingly there, anxiously sitting on the coach as Aaron entered, and immediately jolted his head up when he heard the door close.

"Hey man," Luke said, his hazel gaze becoming soft as he looked at Aaron. "How did it go?"

Aaron nodded his head as he kept his keys on the cup board. "It went alright," Aaron then shrugged off the coat James gave him and sat down beside Luke, a small sigh escaping his lips.

"How's the little man?" Luke asked, a small smile on his face as his hazel eyes brightened.

Aaron smiled a bit. Closed his eyes. Exhaled. "He's alright, even asked about you,"

Luke's hazel gaze twinkled. "Did he?"

"Yeah, asked me to bring you the next time I go." Aaron said mindlessly, running a hand through his dark hair.

"I'd love to see him again," Luke said, grinning as he snuggled deeper into the small sofa. "So was it better than last year?" Luke asked, instantly regretting the question as he saw the pain slip through Aaron's eyes.

Aaron nodded his head stiffly, blue eyes transfixed on the ceiling as he whispered. "Much better," H̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶c̶r̶y̶.̶ ̶

Luke nodded his head before he let out a small yawn. "Well if we're going to school tomorrow, we better get some sleep now. It's almost 2 in the morning," Luke said as he got up, stretching a bit before he grinned. "Or are you being a rebel and ditching again?"

Aaron shook his head. "No, I'm going."

Luke nodded his head, before he said. "Alright then, call dibs on the bed." He then strolled off to the bedroom, an obvious smirk on his lips as he went.

Aaron glared at the direction Luke went in, scoffing at how noble he was acting.

The idiot even forgot to switch off all the lights in the apartment, inevitably making Aaron let out a frustrated groan as he got up and switched off the lights - each and every single one of them.

The only light that was tip toeing into Aaron apartment was the 3 am Moon, creeping its reflected rays through his window as he laid on the sofa with pillows and a blanket.

But even though he felt warm underneath the blankets and comfortable with the pillows, Aaron couldn't seem to sleep.

It was at these times of the day when he would think.

He wondered what the people outside the window he was looking at were doing, what the continent next to his were up to and perhaps if anyone was awake with him.

He wondered if Rose was awake now, secretly reading a book beneath the covers of her bed,

Or if she was soft asleep, her bright eyes regenerating the energy for tomorrow's warmth and beauty as she dozed to a world of her own.

He then remembered the text he sent her at around 11 pm, wondering whether she already read it, or was probably laughing at how stupid he sounded.

Rose made the hole in his heart tickle; as though the edges were slowly coming together. It felt weird, but it felt nice.

Thinking of Rose made an idea bloom in his head, making him sprint out of bed as he went to grab a hold of the item before he stuffed it in his bag and went under his blanket again.

Her warm eyes were the last thing he thought of before he fell asleep.

S̶o̶ ̶b̶e̶a̶u̶t̶i̶f̶u̶l̶.̶ ̶

✕✕✕

The next morning he felt icky - as though his entire body was drenching with sticky slime as he rolled off the sofa.

He then decided to take a shower, and judging from how it was still dark outside, he didn't see why not.

Aaron never got much sleep after he sees James, perhaps even for a whole week, he would only get 2-3 hours of sleep.

He would get nightmares.

And he thought it would be better to wake up before they had a place to happen, and considering how Aaron has been doing this for about 2 years now, he was used to it.

The hot water soothed his tense muscles, but it couldn't soothe his aching heart.

He missed James, deeply.

By the time Aaron was done with his shower, the morning dawn was slipping through the cracks of his window, alivening the cold air around him.

Aaron felt relief and satisfaction as he put on his black shirt, letting out a little breath on how cold it was.

He just ran his fingers through his hair before he slung his bag over his shoulder and walked out the door.

Luke was going to have to wake up himself (That's what he gets for making Aaron sleep on the couch) as Aaron waited for the 6:15 am bus.

He shivered as he waited on the bench, and he was smart for wearing a long sleeved black shirt, but stupid for wearing a thin one.

R̶o̶s̶e̶,̶ ̶R̶o̶s̶e̶,̶ ̶R̶o̶s̶e̶.̶ ̶

The thought of her sent an impulse to check whether he did place the small gift in his bag, and when he saw it, he closed his bag again before waiting for the bus.

It was on days like this that Aaron was glad Riley was late.

The morning sun was just whispering its rays to the world, the grey atmosphere slowly becoming brighter and brighter. Even though he shivered in the cold air, it made little swish and swash noises that Aaron enjoyed.

"Good morning Riley," Aaron said as he entered the bus, looking at his own seat as he heard Riley mumble a small Good mornin Aaron.

H̶e̶ ̶c̶o̶u̶l̶d̶n̶'̶t̶ ̶w̶a̶i̶t̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶s̶e̶e̶ ̶R̶o̶s̶e̶.̶ ̶

The halls of Bitterne Park High were as they were the day before, whispers echoing throughout the halls as Aaron moved along.

He felt cold, shivering as he pulled his black shirt closer to him. He managed to rub his hands together as he blew into them, confusingly watching as some girls came in with shorts and short sleeved shirts - it was freezing.

He then made his way to his locker, h̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶l̶o̶o̶k̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶ ̶R̶o̶s̶e̶, stuffing his books in it while he grabbed some out.

"Aaron!"

H̶e̶ ̶s̶t̶o̶p̶p̶e̶d̶ ̶b̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶i̶n̶g̶.̶ ̶

He looked at her, s̶h̶e̶ ̶l̶o̶o̶k̶s̶ ̶s̶o̶ ̶b̶e̶a̶u̶t̶i̶f̶u̶l̶, before he said. "Hey Rose," H̶i̶s̶ ̶h̶e̶a̶r̶t̶ ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶r̶a̶c̶i̶n̶g̶, "How are you?"

"Well last time I checked, I wasn't the one who ditched yesterday," She said flatly, crossing her arms as she sighed.

"I was busy," He shrugged. s̶o̶ ̶b̶e̶a̶u̶t̶i̶f̶u̶l̶,̶ ̶s̶o̶ ̶b̶e̶a̶u̶t̶i̶f̶u̶l̶,̶ ̶s̶o̶ ̶b̶e̶a̶u̶t̶i̶f̶u̶l̶.

"How are you?" She smiled. "Everything alright?"

H̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶c̶r̶y̶, "Yeah, I'm good, everything's fine."

She seemed unconvinced. "I don't really know how you do it," Rose said, a small frown etched on her lips.

"Do what?" Stay calm.

"Hang out with those friends of yours," H̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶s̶m̶i̶l̶e̶, "I thought I was going to put a bullet through my head."

"Glad to know I'm not the only one who feels that way," He nodded his head. "You'll get used to it though."

Aaron then felt pain; immense pain pass through his lower abdomen as they chatted a bit more.

He tried his best to hide it, and he did pull it off, except for how stiff he seemed.

He gritted his teeth in English, clenching his fists as the pain wandered around his body.

He let out a small sigh of relief as he heard the bell ring, and then he left.

The pain didn't seclude as he entered the library, but he was distracted by the books in the library.

He took one last breath before he headed straight for the shelves, already picking out a book as he seated himself on the floor.

But he heard her.

"Rose?" He hated it when he sounded stupid. "Is there something wrong?"

"Nice to see you too Aaron," Rose frowned, seating herself next to him.

"What do you want Rose?" He didn't mean to sound so annoyed.

"I want to cheer you up?" She said it more like a question rather than an answer.

He pressed his lips into a thin line before he uttered. "And what makes you think I am upset?"

"You're aura is really dull and depressing." H̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶l̶a̶u̶g̶h̶.̶ ̶

"You can read aura now?"

"It's a gift."

Aaron then sighed. Looked up to the ceiling. "Well I'm not upset," said Aaron. "Just thinking."

"Aaron," H̶e̶ ̶c̶o̶u̶l̶d̶n̶'̶t̶ ̶b̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶e̶,̶ ̶c̶o̶u̶l̶d̶n̶'̶t̶ ̶b̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶e̶,̶ ̶c̶o̶u̶l̶d̶n̶'̶t̶ ̶b̶r̶e̶a̶t̶h̶e̶, "Did you really think I came here to ask you whether you were upset or not?"

H̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶s̶m̶i̶l̶e̶, "Well knowing you, of course I didn't," said Aaron. "I just wasn't expecting you here."

"Well what did you do you little rebel?" Rose grinned, playfulness clouding her eyes as she spoke. "It must be nice having a day off from school."

J̶a̶m̶e̶s̶,̶ ̶J̶a̶m̶e̶s̶,̶ ̶J̶a̶m̶e̶s̶, "I just laid around."

As if sensing his discomfort, "Aaron," She said softly. "I hope you know you can tell me anything," She gave him a tight lipped smile, brown eyes concerned as she continued. "anything at all."

H̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶p̶o̶u̶r̶ ̶h̶i̶s̶ ̶s̶o̶u̶l̶ ̶o̶u̶t̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶h̶e̶r̶, "You're getting way ahead of yourself if you think I'm going to tell you what's wrong."

"So something is wrong?" She grinned, obviously content with her observation.

H̶i̶s̶ ̶h̶e̶a̶r̶t̶ ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶e̶x̶p̶l̶o̶d̶i̶n̶g̶, "You're quite a handful aren't you?"

"I could say the same to you."

And when the silence settled upon them, he rummaged through his bag, and got out the book.

He never realised how someone could look so enticing when they day dream, h̶e̶ ̶d̶i̶d̶n̶'̶t̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶d̶i̶s̶t̶u̶r̶b̶ ̶h̶e̶r̶, but he needed to give her this.

He poked her forearm with the edge of the book, watching as she snapped back from her daze and looked at it.

And then, she smiled.

H̶e̶ ̶e̶x̶p̶l̶o̶d̶e̶d̶.̶ ̶

"What is this?" H̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶l̶a̶u̶g̶h̶.̶ ̶

'What do you think it is?"

"Fine geez, I was just trying to sound glad." She snickered, her eyes still locked onto the cover.

"You don't need to sound glad," b̶e̶a̶u̶t̶y̶,̶ ̶b̶e̶a̶u̶t̶y̶,̶ ̶b̶e̶a̶u̶t̶y̶, "Your smile is plenty enough."

Her warm gaze was locked onto the cover, the most beautiful smile tickling her lips as she stared,

B̶e̶a̶u̶t̶y̶,̶ ̶b̶e̶a̶u̶t̶y̶,̶ ̶b̶e̶a̶u̶t̶y̶.̶ ̶

"I liked this book," He told her, "And I thought you might too."

"I've always wanted to read this," She breathed, her syrup eyes shimmering with glee. "Thank you."

And Aaron knew that if the world ended the next moment, or even if he caught an incurable disease, the smile on Rose's face made his life worth living.

✕✕✕

Aaron was coughing when he arrived home, a small sneeze slipping through his lips as he closed the door.

Oh no.

It was truly ironic on a non living thing like a virus could affect an entire human being with its venom.

Aaron was never one to get sick, but when he did, it hit him hard.

He would have the worst fevers, blocked noses and if he was really unlucky, a bad case of nausea.

That explained why he felt weird all day - because of the dreadful virus growing in him.

Aaron then scowled - he knew he should've killed that kid.

He told himself he wouldn't wait for James long, but then some kid just popped out of no where and sneezed on his face - explaining the virus reproducing itself in his body.

There was no questions of antibiotics or viral resistant drugs - he simply couldn't afford them.

But after a couple of months of experience, he has developed an effective and affordable method of healing - The-Anti-Social-And-Ramen-Supplyment.

This specific remedy consisted of being anti social -avoiding any contact with anything with a pulse- while the virus grew within him, and that also meant Luke.

Ramen was a food high in protein and carbohydrate ; the things that he needed when he was sick. And with Ramen being extremely cheap and a 2 minute meal, who could say no?

Aaron peeled off his sweaty black shirt and put on another, letting out a small sigh when he could feel something cool against his flaming body.

But then he realised he needed to go to work.
