DECISIONS
Iris' POV
It has been five months since I accepted Dashiell's heart but I still couldn't wrap my head over the fact that he's truly mine. I mean, what the heck did I do to deserve this kind of happiness? Is this all just part of a long dream? Because if it is, I hope I never wake up.
"In love na in love ang loka," asar ni Tiffany sabay iling at talikod sa akin. Humagikgik lang ako at binalik na ang mga mata sa wallpaper ng phone ko. It's a picture of us inside my room, with him kissing my right cheek while I'm taking a mirror selfie. His arms are wrapped around my waist, hugging me from behind.
Our friends would often say, don't we ever get tired of each other? They say most couples usually get irritated at each other few months after they started dating. But with me and Dash, it's totally different.
Each morning I wake up with the same excitement that I felt when I agreed to be his girlfriend, always looking forward into seeing him. Who wouldn't be, especially when you'll get that sweet kiss on the lips exactly the moment he sees you when he picks you up at your house? And that jaw dropping smile that would make your heart skip a beat? I feel like I'm a part of a romance movie.
"Stop staring at your phone! It's creepy!" pagsuway ni Ava kaya tumawa na ako at ipinatong dito sa lamesa ang phone ko.
Nandito kami ngayon sa The Grove, nagpapalipas ng oras. Madalas kong ginagawa ito dahil mas maaga natatapos ang pasok ko kumpara kay Dash. I usually wait for him to finish his training so we could eat dinner outside or go home together. Halos hindi ko na nga nagagamit ang kotse ko dahil walang palya ang paghatid sundo niya sa akin araw-araw.
Tumingin ako sa orasan at ngumiti. Almost time!
I grabbed my bag and started combing my hair. Tapos nagpabango na rin ako at naglagay na ng lip balm.
"Ayon na nga, nagayos na siya dahil parating na ang jowa. Grabe wala nga si Dash dito pero pakiramdam ko, third wheel pa rin ako. Psh tigil mo na 'yan please! Nakaka-bitter na," Caylee playfully pushed me a little, making all of us giggle.
"Seriously, what's the secret? How do you keep the fire burning?" Ava asked, leaning into me so she could hear my answer clearly.
"Sleeping together, obviously," Naomi murmured, sounding so bored.
Naghiyawan silang lahat kaya namula ang mga pisngi ko. "Not really..." mahinang sambit ko.
"Sus Iris! Okay lang 'yan. Wala naman ang mga boys. We can talk about it." Tiff grinned.
"Besides, you know us. Hindi naman makakalabas dito ang mga sasabihin mo," Ava added.
"I know you're not a kiss-and-tell but we're dying to know. How big is Dashiell's? Or atleast give us an idea on how long it is," humahagikgik na tanong ni Naomi.
"Oh my gosh Naomi! Ang lala mo!" Tiff commented, laughing at how naughty our friend was. I never get offended at Naomi's green jokes. She used to live in America so it's only natural for her to be like that.
"Bakit ba? E sa curious ako e!"
"And why would you be curious about someone else's boyfriend's dick?"
"Gusto ko lang malaman if napapasaya niya itong kaibigan nating ito. Mukha namang oo dahil humpay ang pagngisi niyan ni Iris. Yieee! Sana all!"
I looked at my hands and frowned. "Well...uhhh....we haven't..."
"Huh?" tanong ni Naomi. "Ano ulit? 'Di ko narinig, sarehhh."
"W-we haven't...you know..."
"Wait. Are you telling me you haven't done it with Dashiell yet?!" Caylee almost shouted.
My eyes widened in shock and I hushed her immediately. Alam ko sound proof ang The Grove pero ewan ko ba, sobrang nakakahiya pa ring pinagsigawan niya. "Caylee naman!"
"Hindi pa nga talaga, Iris? Seryoso ba? Tell us!" Naomi demanded.
I crossed my arms and frowned at them. "Is that a crime? May batas ba na kapag five months na kayo ng jowa mo, dapat may nangyari na sa inyo?"
"Oo nga naman. Wag niyo nga igaya itong si Iris sa inyo," Tiffany defended me. "Mabuti nga 'yon na may self control sila. Napakadelikado kaya kapag nakikipagtalik ka. You can get pregnant at a young age. We're all financially stable but are we emotionally ready? Tsaka hello? We're not even graduates yet. Our parents would be so disappointed at us. Kaya lagi niyong iisipin 'to ha. Always think about the consequences of your actions."
"Hoy eto naman, 'di ko naman siya tinutulak gawin 'yon! Grabe ka. Nagtanong lang ako ha." Naomi pouted.
"Oo nga," pagtango ni Caylee. "Iris sorry ah. I'm also not encouraging you to do it. Nagulat lang talaga ako kasi dumaan ang pasko at new year. 'Di ba lagi kayong magkasama nung Christmas break at ang clingy niyo pa sa isa't-isa? Kaya nag-assume na akong may nangyari na." Even my sister Irene thought so too. She reminded me that Dash and I had to use protection. That was such an awkward conversation, I had to push her out of the room just to make her stop.
"Pero matanong lang girl. Have you both never felt like doing it? Alam naman naming parehas kayong hindi na virgin, duh. And I'm sure there's that ranging hormones na sobrang hirap pigilan." Naomi chuckled, making all of them laugh again. Halos mabatukan na nga siya ni Caylee na tawang tawa na ngayon.
I blushed even harder. "Sa totoo lang, ilang beses na ngang muntik-muntikan nang may mangyari pero tuwing nadadala kami, parehas kaming nagde-decide tumigil."
"How can you both stop? That's hard especially for the guy's part, 'di ba?" Naomi pointed out.
"Kaya nga. Anong ginagawa niya kapag turned on na siya?" Ava added.
Why am I having this conversation with my friends again?
"Ano...uh...pumupunta siya sa CR."
"And does it alone? Poor Dashiell----ARAY! Tiffany ha! Ano ka, nanay ko? Makahampas 'to!" Naomi glared at Tiff.
"Tumigil na kayo."
"Yes, Mom!" The three girls replied at the same time. Napahalakhak sila dahil doon.
"Anyway, that's really cool. Atleast nakakapagisip pa kayo ng maayos ni Dash. Bilib na talaga ako sa kanya. He has so much will power that he's able to restraint himself just to show you how much he respects you. Grabe, ilang lalake na lang ba ang ganyan ngayon?" Ava commented.
"Kaya nga nasasabi kong sobrang swerte ko kay Dashiell. He's so perfect."
"Awww!" They all mumbled.
"Wait lang. Sorry Iris ha, hindi ko kasi magawang matanggal ang pagiging curious ko hehe. I wanna know. Who's hesitating first?" Naomi asked. She just won't give up.
I chewed my lower lip and pointed a finger at myself.
"Can we ask why?" tanong ni Caylee na halatang gusto ring malaman ang sagot ko.
"Pakiramdam ko kasi hindi pa tamang panahon para mangyari 'yon. Besides, hindi naman kami nagmamadali ni Dash at hindi 'yon importante para sa'ming dalawa. We're still in love even though we haven't done it."
They all nodded.
"I wish I had that feeling when I was with Aaron. Masyado kasi akong mapusok noon kaya ngayon, nagsisisi tuloy ako. Hindi ko muna kinilala mabuti 'yung tao bago ko ibinigay ang sarili ko," Caylee murmured sadly and we all became quiet because of that.
Gusto kong i-comfort siya ngunit hindi ko alam kung paano. Mabuti na lang ay binago bigla ni Tiffany ang usapan.
Minutes later, Dash finally came. He greeted everyone and stayed for a couple of minutes before he grabbed my bag. We said goodbye to my friends then we walked towards his car. Habang naglalakad ay naalala ko ang naging usapan namin nila Caylee kanina.
I feel bad for not being hundred percent honest with them. I lied about one thing, the answer to the question 'Who hesitates first?'.
Nung una, ako ang nagdalawang isip. Pero nung mga sumunod na, palaging si Dashiell ang pumipigil. I guess what happened after my birthday party got stuck on his mind. Not really sure if he's only being a gentleman but he just never tried to touch me again. Hindi naman ako nagrereklamo. Sex isn't what I want from him. Like I said, I am happy with Dashiell. But I'm starting to feel strange about it like I'm wondering if I did something wrong to held him off.
I don't know. Maybe I'm being weird.
"And coach was upset with Royce again for the third time! It was hilarious, right?" Hindi ko narinig kung ano ang kinukwento niya pero nakitawa na lang ako at sumakay na sa kotse niya. I watched as he sat at the driver's seat and continued to talk about how the training went this afternoon.
"So, saan tayo ngayon?" He asked.
"Kahit saan..."
Sinandal niya ang ulo niya sa upuan at nagisip. "How about we go home early and then spend the whole day together tomorrow? Sorry my life, I'm exhausted today. Gusto ko na lang matulog." Hinalikan niya ang kamay ko at hinintay ang sagot ko.
"Sure. Wala naman akong lakad bukas kaya ayos lang. Sa mall lang tayo bukas?"
He nodded. "Yeah, that sounds good."
"Okay." And then he drove me to my house and kissed my goodnight.
For some reason, I feel like I should have insisted on spending more time with him. Pwede naman kaming mag-dinner sa kanila at kung napapagod na siya mag-drive, tatawagan ko na lang ang driver ko para sunduin ako. We can spend hours together at his room, watching a movie while cuddling together. Kahit makatulog pa siya, wala lang sa'kin as long as yakap yakap ko siya.
Okay that sound silly. Magkakasama naman kami buong araw bukas. Why am I being like this? Siguro dahil na-miss ko lang siya. Buong araw ko kasi siya hindi nakita. He and his team had a sponsored lunch at a hotel. Hindi ako sumama kahit niyayaya ako ni Dashiell dahil syempre, oras nila 'yon ng team niya. May mga sponsors silang kasama doon at mga member ng school board. I don't want to interfere.
Huminga na lang ako ng malalim at pumasok na sa loob ng bahay.
Damian's POV
Ever since Nova got out of the hospital, a lot had happened. She had changed into a complete different person. Kung dati rati ay mataray lang siya lalo na sa mga hindi niya kilala, ngayon lahat ay iniiwasan na niya. She continued to study at our university but she secluded herself from the world. Nilayo niya ang sarili niya pati na rin sa aming mga kaibigan niya. I barely see her hanging out with her friends or classmates.
"Nova!" I shouted but she didn't even look behind. It's impossible for her not to hear me. I'm just a few feet away from her. Alam kong susunduin na siya ng driver niya anytime kaya kailangan ko siyang malapitan bago ito dumating.
"Nova, come on." Hinawakan ko ang braso niya at humarang sa harapan niya. "How long are you going to do this to me?"
May hindi man lang siya tumingin sa mata ko. She just looked away with that cold expression glued on her face.
"I miss you. I miss my friend," pag-amin ko.
Life isn't as fun as it was, now that Nova's not part of it anymore. Wala nang nangungulit sa akin at nangaasar. Walang biglang dumarating sa bahay upang makitambay sa kwarto ko o 'di kaya nagdadala ng merienda dahil alam niyang wala kaming oras um-order.
Inalis niya ang pagkakahawak ko sa braso niya at naglakad na muli.
"Kausapin mo naman ako oh. Please!" pagmamakaawa ko kahit na sangkatutak ng mga estudyante ang dumaraan dito sa hallway.
Everyone glanced at our direction but Nova.
"Ano bang ginawa kong mali? Galit ka ba kasi wala ako dito nung nangyari ang aksidente? Nova, I went back as soon as I heard about the incident."
She stopped so I used that chance to ran towards her. I frowned at I saw tears started building up on her eyes.
"Talk to me." Hinila ko siya at niyakap. Hindi naman siya nagpumiglas ngunit hindi rin siya yumakap pabalik. "If I did something wrong, then I apologize for that. Kung ano man 'yon, sana mapatawad mo 'ko."
"Hindi mo talaga alam?"
"Oo Nova. I'm clueless as to why you're treating me like this. Hindi ko alam kung anong nangyari at bakit mo ko nilalayuan pagkatapos kitang bisitahin araw araw sa hospital. Nababaliw na 'ko kakaisip---"
I was shocked when she pushed me away and slapped me. Pagtingin ko sa kanya ay naiyak na siya. "You're a jerk! An asshole! Stop that!" rinig ko sa boses niya ang pagmamakaawa. "That's exactly why I have to stay away from you, why I have to force myself to hate you! Damian, you're confusing me! You act as if you like me but the truth is, you don't!"
"What are you talking about? I do like you!"
"But only as a friend! Right? You never looked at me the other way!"
I was too stunned to speak.
"Damian, I have feelings for you. I'm sure you're aware of that. Didn't you try to stay away from me after we almost kissed? Unfortunately you failed miserably because you felt guilty with what happened to me. I know why you're always at the hospital. You wanted to make it up to me. I'm telling you, you don't have to. Wala kang kinalaman sa aksidente. I was being reckless because I was angry at you. I wanted to go somewhere alone but it was raining and I wasn't being careful. That was all my fault, not yours."
"You had it all wrong. Nova, palagi kitang binibisita dahil nagaalala talaga ako sa'yo."
"I'm doing you the favor, Damian. Since you can't do it, I will. I'm removing myself from your life. You should thank me and not beg me to stay." She sobbed and wiped the tears on her cheeks. "Please stop bothering me if you have no plans to be with me."
Umiling ako. "Why can't we be friends again? Why can't we just go back to the way things were between us? We were happy and contented!"
"You're so f*cking selfish! What, you're gonna keep me at your side until you meet your one true love? Damian, I'm not a freaking masochist. I can't spend time with you and see you build what I want with someone else."
"But there's no someone else! What the heck are you talking about?!"
"No one for now. But what about tomorrow? In a few months? A year? You can never tell."
Hindi ko na alam ang dapat kong sabihin para mabago ko ang isip niya.
"I don't want to be there when that time comes. I just can't handle that," She added.
"So that's it? Kakalimutan mo na lang ang pagkakaibigan natin?"
Umiwas siya ng tingin at huminga ng malalim. "I really think it's better for us to cut ties while it's still early. In the end, I'm the only one who's going to get hurt. Not you, Damian." She looked at me and forced herself to smile. "Let's be strangers again, hmmm stiff?"
Tumulo na ang luha sa mga mata ko. I can't believe she's really doing this. Naiintindihan kong nasasaktan siya pero... ang tagal na naming magkasama para itapon niya na lang lahat ng iyon.
"Don't fall for someone like me again, okay? Choose someone better." Hinalikan ko ang noo niya bago ako tumalikod at nagmadaling pumasok sa kotse ko. Then I drove away as fast as I could.
Why is it that I instantly fell for Irene but I couldn't with Nova? I barely know that girl from Paris unlike Nova whom I spent most of my second year college with.
Nasasaktan ako pero wala naman akong magawa.
Tama si Nova. I'm too selfish if I keep her with me when I couldn't give her what she wants.
"I'm sorry if I can't love you back, Nova. I really wish I could. I wish someday, my heart would choose you."
Dashiell's POV
Physical touch is Iris' love language.
Surprisingly, she's way clingier than I thought she would be but I like it. In fact, I'm thankful that she is. Gustong-gusto ko tuwing nagi-initiate siyang hawakan ang kamay ko. Sometimes she'd lean just to get a peck on the lips. Madalas pa siyang yumakap sa akin kaya kahit anong pagod ko, nawawala talaga agad kapag nandiyan siya.
"Ang bango mo, sobra." Inakbayan ko siya at hinalikan ang buhok niya.
Hindi siya nagsalita. Ngumiti lang siya at kumain ng popcorn.
I kept on kissing her hair every know and then until the movie ended. Paglabas namin ng sinehan ay nagyaya naman siyang maglakad lakad.
Kuntento na ako na nakaakbay ako sa kanya kahit hindi kami naguusap. May oras din kasing katulad ako ni Iris na hindi masalita. I prefer to keep my mouth shut and enjoy the moment.
While walking, I saw a store full of video games. Napangisi agad ako.
"I'll go inside and look for something to buy. Do you want to join me?"
"Actually, I think I'll buy some new clothes. Dito lang ako sa tapat."
"Okay. I'll go there after I'm done here."
Pumasok na ako sa loob at nagtanong agad ng mga new released games nila. Ang laki ng ngiti sa mukha ko habang binibili ko ang mga iyon. Panigurado maiinggit ang mga kaibigan ko kapag nakita nila ang mga ito.
"Salamat boss!" I told the guy before I walked out of the store.
I was about to go straight to where Iris said she'll go when someone grabbed my arm.
"Hey---" I thought it's Iris but I was wrong. There stands a girl wearing a seethrough white shirt and blue jean shorts. Sobrang layo sa suot ng girlfriend ko na naka-dress ngayon.
"Hi Dash. Long time no see!"
Kumunot ang noo ko. Sino 'to?
"Hello?"
"Wait, don't tell me you can't remember who I am?"
"Sorry, I have a bad memory." Ayokong maging rude dahil baka mamaya ay importanteng tao pala ito, hindi ko lang maalala kung sino.
"It's me. Diana."
"Who?"
"Oh come on! You're seatmate during our highschool days..."
"AHHH! DIANA! Uy musta?" I gave her a quick hug. "Grabe ang layo na ng itsura mo kumpara dati. Ang itim mo pa noon 'di ba atsaka 'yung buhok mo parang si Dora?"
"Ang sama pa rin ng ugali mo!" Hinampas niya ko sa braso kaya nagtawanan kami. "But seriously, you're right. Ang dugyot ko pa noon, nakakainis! I even had bad odor remember? Sorry for that."
I chuckled. Good old times. "I thought you're living in Australia now? 'Di ba nag-migrate ang family mo doon pagka-graduate natin?"
"Yup. I'm only here for vacation but I'm still living in Australia. I even go to same school as your brother's. Actually nakikita ko si Damian palagi sa campus. He's friends with my cousin, Ate Nova."
"Pinsan mo si Nova? What a small world!"
"You've met her?"
"Oo, pumunta kami nila Papa sa Australia last year."
"Well it's good to see you. I'd love to catch up with you but I'm meeting a friend and I'm late."
"Sayang. My girlfriend's actually with me. It would be great to show her some old faces."
"The Elite girl? Damn Dash, that one's really beautiful."
"Yeah, I'm a lucky man." Ngumisi ako at naalala ang sinabi niya. "You said you were late? Hanggang ngayon ba naman? Hay nako Diana. Sige na. Go ahead. It's nice meeting you. Take care."
"You too! Bye!" Bumeso siya sa akin at naglakad na palayo. I smiled as I remembered how she used to copy my answers during exams. Tamad kasi magaral ang isang iyon pero mukhang malaki na talaga ang pinagbago niya.
Pumasok na ako sa loob ng clothing store at hinanap si Iris. Nakita ko siyang kuha ng kuha ng mga naka-hanger na damit at iniaabot doon sa naga-assist.
"I'll get those," she ordered around.
"Lahat po ito, Ma'am? Gusto niyo po bang isukat muna---"
"Here's my card." Nanlaki ang mga mata nung naga-assist at agad tinawag ang kasamahan niya. Halos tumakbo sila upang i-swipe agad ang card ni Iris. I think they're afraid my girlfriend might change her mind.
"Ang dami niyan ha." Lumapit ako at hahalikan sana siya ngunit tumalikod siya at kumuha pa ng ilang damit. I chuckled. "May event ba?"
"Wala naman."
She keeps on walking so I decided to sit at the side and just watch her. She looks so preoccupied with shopping. First time ko siyang makitang ganito. Hindi niya kasi ugaling mamili ng sobrang dami kapag kasama ako. She said she can do those with her mom or her girl-friends.
Mukhang matatagalan pa siya kaya naman tiningnan ko na lang isa-isa ang mga game CDs na binili ko.
"Have them delivered at my house, please." I heard Iris say before sitting beside me.
"Tapos na?" I asked, holding her hand.
"Nooe," she simply answered without even looking at me.
"Ma'am, papirmahan na lang po ito," pagtawag nung babae.
Walang anu-ano'y binitawan ni Iris ang kamay ko at lumapit doon sa cashier. I frowned and stood up. I walked towards her but she walked out of the store without saying anything.
I followed her to the next store. "Bakit mo 'ko iniwan?"
I rested my hand on her waist but she moved away again. Kuha siya ng kuha ng mga bag. "I'm in a hurry."
"Bakit? May pupuntahan pa ba tayo?"
Iris ignored me again. Pagkabili niya ng mga iyon ay binuhat niya lahat ng mga shopping bags na walang pasabi sa akin. I only heard from the shop owner that they don't offer delivery service so Iris had no choice but to carry all of it.
"Ako na." Sinubukan kong kunin ang mga dala dala niya ngunit umiling siya.
"Kaya kong magbuhat, Dash."
"No. I'll do it." Wala siyang nagawa nang agawin ko sa kanya ang mga shopping bags.
"Okay, if you say so."
Akala ko tapos na siya sa pamimili ngunit nagulat ako nang lumipat na naman siya sa kabilang store. Ibinaba ko sa gilid ang mga bitbit ko at nilapitan siya.
"Galit ka ba?"
"Huh? Bakit naman ako magagalit?"
Napakamot ako sa ulo ko. "I don't know. You're acting strange."
"Shopping is strange?"
Nagkasalubong ang mga kilay ko. Maybe I'm overthinking.
"So we're good?"
"Miss, may ibang kulay ba kayo nito?" she asked as if she didn't hear a word that I just said.
"Hindi ka ba magsusukat?" curious na tanong ko. She just picks whatever she likes. Nakakapanibago.
"I'm not in the mood."
I smirked at a thought that entered my mind. "I can do it for you. Ako magtatanggal at magpapalit ng damit mo."
"Actually tinatamad na pala ako. Let's go home."
"Already? Anong oras pa lang ah. Why don't we eat---"
"I'm tired, Dash."
Tinitigan ko siya at mukha naman siyang hindi galit. Well yeah, why would she be? Siguro red days niya kaya siya ganyan.
Nagkibit balikat na lang ako at sinunod na ang gusto niya.
"Okay. Let's go." Hinawakan ko ang kamay niya at naglakad na kami papunta sa elevator. Aakbayan ko sana siya nang lumayo siya nang kaunti.
I knew at that moment that something's wrong. Kanina pa siya umiiwas.
I decided not to say anything until we were at the basement parking lot. Pagkalagay ko sa compartment ng mga pinamili namin ay sumakay na ako sa kotse. She's already sitting at the shotgun seat, looking outside the car window. I started the engine but didn't put my seatbelt on.
Hinintay kong makaramdam siya hanggang sa tiningnan niya na ako.
"What?" She asked.
"You're awfully quiet..."
"I am always quiet."
"No, it's different. There's something else. What is it?"
She stared at me for a few seconds before she shook her head. "I don't know what you're talking about."
I'm not being ridiculous. Kung walang mali, bakit ang lamig ng pakitungo niya sa akin? She won't just dodge my hand away just to pay for her clothes. And she won't leave me behind as if I'm not with her.
"Iris, paano tayo magkakaintindihan kung maglilihim ka sa'kin?" mahinahong tanong ko. "I want to know why you're upset."
"I'm not upset. I'm just tired."
"Iris Fleur Leona---"
"I have no problem, Dash. Iuwi mo na ako."
Tsk. Fine.
Kung matigas ang ulo mo, mas matigas ang ulo ko sa'yo.
I started to drive but not towards the direction of her house. Mukhang malalim ang iniisip niya dahil hindi niya napansin iyon hanggang sa makarating kami sa bahay.
"W-why are we here?"
"Sabi mo iuwi kita," simpleng sagot ko bago ako bumaba ng kotse. She immediately went out as well.
"Ano? Dash, I told you I'm not in the mood to play any games with you. Gusto ko na sabing umuwi---"
"Let's go inside for a minute, okay? If you're tired, you can rest at my bed." She was still going to argue but I decided to pull her hand. Wala siyang nagawa kundi magpahila na lang sa akin.
Pagpasok sa kwarto ko ay umupo agad siya sa kama. I locked the door but did not go near her. Sumandal lang ako sa pintuan at pinagmasdan siya.
She's pissed off. Halatang halata sa mukha niya.
"Will you please explain to me why you're so distant? Are you mad because I bought so many video games?"
She crossed her arms but didn't answer me. Tumingin lang siya sa ibaba at hindi umimik.
Shit. What did I do?
"Iris..."
And there it is again. Silence.
Lumapit na ako sa kanya at umupo sa tabi niya. I faced her and touched her leg but she didn't move. Ang tagal kong naghintay na magsalita siya ngunit wala yata talaga siyang balak pansinin ako.
I bit my lower lip and stared at her.
Nakaka-frustrate. Wala naman akong maisip na ginawa ko para magkaganito siya. Spending too much money was never an issue in our relationship. So what is it?
Ni-recall ko lahat ng ginawa naming dalawa hanggang sa may pumasok sa isip ko.
"Was this about Diana?" I tried to guess and bingo! She frowned and almost glared at the floor. "Are you jealous?" amazed na tanong ko.
