Chapter Fourteen

Resistance

Hailey Jane Rexler

His beautiful blue eyes bore into me, it was if he was reading my very soul like a book. And it was safe to say, it was kind of uncomfortable. I didn't want him seeing the suck I had going on inside of me, he didn't need those kinds of dampered emotions holding him down. He diserved better... so much better. I hardly knew him, yet I wanted him to have the world. I needed him to be happy, and I don't think I could give him that. I didn't know what to do now... I came with every intention of pouring out the truth to him, and never having to see him again... no matter how much it hurt me. Then of course, stupid Drew Holiday had to kiss me with the most amazing kiss I'd ever imagined. A kiss that left me longing to have his lips bac on mine, where they belonged. I took a step back. He took a step forward.

'You're making this difficult...' I said.

'What happened to not leaving me?' he asked grinning now.

'Spur of the moment...' I said.

'Too bad, I took it seriously.' he said.

'I don't want this...' I muttered.

'I do.' he said. He grabbed my arms. The inviting flames tasting my skin. He lifted my chin to look me in the eyes, I didn't protest, his eyes were godly, much like the rest of him. Oh lord... might as well take a belt and call me whipped. 'More than anything in the world.' he said seriously.

'I don't see why.' I said.

'Get some eyes sweetheart.' he grinned. I knew what they meant by a breath-taking smile.

'What do I do now...' I muttered.

'YOU don't do anything, it's we from now on.' he said.

'We...' I muttered. The fact that a simple two letter word sent flutters to my heart and set my mind aflight, had to be a bit frightening. But instead it made me too happy for my own good. 'You have a girlfriend.' I said. He stepped back and looked at me shocked.

'That's what you're thinking about?' he asked me dumbfounded.

'Well...' I said. He did.

'I'd take you over her any day.' He would?

'You would?' I asked.

'That's not even a question worth asking.' he said.

'It isn't?'

'No. I'd do anything for you.' he said. He's unbeleivable, he really is.

'We hardly know each other...' I muttered.

'Then we should get to know each other.' he said.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I took a deep breath. Was this stupid... maybe. Was I going to do it... yes. I sat at the chair to left of the head of the table. Our pack was having a meeting, we were discussing the war and the ever present issues of rogues. Suddenly, the topic shifted back towards the South pack, I gulped. Drew was going to be Alpha of that pack some day. I nudged my father. The group was getting extremely rowdy and unkempt.

'Dad,' I whispered. 'I need to tell you something.'

'Not now Hailey,' he said softly. 'We need an advantage!' my father shouted over the group.

'But what?!?' asked Greg, a man about my father's age. 'We've used all the tricks in the book!'

'There has to be something!' my father said.

'Dad,' I nudged him again. 'I really really need to tell you something.'

'Hailey, I told you already, not now.' he said. 'I think we should run new battle tactics.' he said finally. Everyoen groaned. This was his pattern. We couldn't come up with anything new, so we ran battle tactics.

'Dad!' I shouted. Everyone went silent and stared at me, I guped. 'I have to tell you something.' I said quietly.

'Well...' he said expectantly. 'What is it?' I looked around at everyone's equally expectant eyes.

'In front of everyone...?' I asked. He nodded. 'It's kind of... personal.'

'The pack is family, there are no secrets.' he said. 'We except everyone for who they are.' I took a deep breath.

'I found my mate.' I said. Everyone was silent. Then my Dad broke out in a grin.

'I knew you'd find him! We have to have him over immediately to meet his new pack!' Dad said cheerfully. Everyone shouted out their besh wishes and congratulations. Come on people! I'm not getting married! But this whole "new pack" thing wasn't going to roll, Drew had his own responsilities, as did I. We weren't even together!

'He's already part of a pack.' I said.

'Well, it's happened before, he has to come.' my father said sternly. 'You're the next in line for Alpha, so you can't leave.' he said.

'That's just it.' I said. 'He can't either.'

'What are you talking about?' he asked suspiciously.

'He's next in line.' I said. My Dad's face lit up.

'That's it!' he said. Everyone's eyes dashed to him.

'What?' asked my mother. Lucy was grinning at me madly.

'That's our advantage over the South pack!' he said. 'Once Hailey mates with her mate, our packs will join with their combined status and we'll be twice as strong!' he said proudly. Everyone cheered. I slunk into my seat. Hell. Like Drew would help give us an advantage over his own pack. 'What's his name sweety?' he asked me. I gulped.

'Drew...' I said. 'Drew Holiday.' I said quietly. His grin dropped, and everyone went silent.

'John's son?' he asked. I nodded. He grimaced. 'You can't be with him.' my father said.

'Wwwwwwhat?' I stuttered in shock.

'He's the enemy.' he said coldly.

'Bbbbbbbbuut...'

'No buts about it!' he said. I trembled with both fear and anger! 'Are you actually considering any other option?!?' I bit my lip.

'Yes.' I said.

'WHAT?!?' he said. I glared at him.

'Honey... you can't keep her from her mate...' my mother warned him coyly.

'I CAN DO WHATEVER THE HELL I WANT!' he said. 'IS IT THE PACK?!? OR... HIM?!?' he asked. Something flipped in my mind. I instantly knew my answer. I loved my dad, and my mom. I loved Lucy like my own sister. My friends, my home, all of it. I loved it to much to ever leave...

'I choose Drew.' I said simply. Then I walked out the door.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Drew!' I shouted as I opened the door to his house panting. He appeared within seconds, with his friends and his father on his tail.

'Hailey?!?' he asked confused. Tears were welling in my eyes. 'What's wrong?' he growled. 'Who did this to you?'

'My Dad kicked me out of the pack...' I choked out. Tears breaking loose.

'Pack?' John asked confused. 'Is she... one of us?' he asked cautiously. Drew stared into my eyes as he held me. I didn't want to answer, I didn't want to move.

'Yes.' Drew said.

'Is she...' John asked.

'Yes.' Drew said.

'Well she's welcome to stay here then.' John said instantly protective of his son's mate. 'What pack do you belong to? Your father has no authority to kick you out!'

'But he does... he's Alpha.' I said. John's face hardened.

'Do you have any siblings?' he asked. I shook my head. 'So you are next in line?' I nodded my head. 'What pack?'

'North.' I said quiet as a mouse.

'Tell me this...' he said coldly. 'Is your father's name by any chance Peter?' he said my father's name like it was a disease.

'Yes.' I said.

'This is difficult then...' he muttered.
