Chapter Twenty One
The next morning, Angie opened her eyes to the smiling face of Jared. “Wake up Gela,” He whispered, “Put on your bathing suit.”
Angie moaned, but remembered Izzy was still in the room. She slowly got out of the bed, and pushed on Jared. “What’re you doing?” He laughed.
“I need to get changed, and you need to get out,” Angie murmured, “So out.” Jared smiled at her, and then was out the door. Angie walked over to her drawers, and pulled out a bathing suit. It was a white bathing suit with a small heart on the butt in the corner. She put on shorts and a pink tang top over her bathing suit. Then she slipped on her old flip flops, and walked out the room.
“Where are we going?” She groaned as she met Jared in the hallway.
“Swimming,” He answered, grabbing her hand, and then pulling her down the stairs.
“Where are you going?” Allie asked who stepped out of her room, rubbing her eyes.
“Swimming,” Jared repeated.
“Can I come?” Allie smiled.
“Sure,” He said, and then continued down the rest of the stairs.
“Why this early?” Angie asked, and then she got her answer when she was outside. The sun was rising, and it made the sky beautiful. The color of the sky was a warm yellow and orange. The sun kissed the water, which was slowly hitting the beach behind the Shay house. “Wow,” Angie gasped.
“Come on,” Jared urged, and then he was running with her towards the water. He pulled off his shirt, and kicked off his shoes. He dove into the water.
Angie waited anxiously for his black head of hair to pop back out of the water. When it did, Angie let out a small sigh of relief. “Come on Gela,” He yelled, “You’re not scared of the water, are you?”
“No,” She said hesitantly.
“Then hurry up,” He called, “The water’s awesome, and you know, I’m pretty awesome too.”
Angie rolled her eyes.
“What if I catch you?” He asked, “I’ll make sure you don’t drown. I promise!”
Angie looked around, and sighed. She pulled off her tang top and her shorts and then she ran into the freezing cold water. “Jared, this is so cold,” She shrieked, and tried to turn around.
“Oh no you don’t,” Jared muttered, and swam quickly towards her. Angie shrieked again as Jared picked her up and slowly swam her back through the water.
“Jared,” She squealed.
Angie shivered, and Jared just held her tightly in his arms. “It’s…c-c-cold,” She stuttered, and Jared held her tighter.
“Warm yet?” He asked.
“A little,” Angie admitted.
Jared kissed her lightly on the lips. When he pulled away, Angie pressed her lips to his again. He laughed, but Angie kept him close. He smiled trough their kiss, which made Angie smile.
“Oh my God, is that you guys?” Allie called, and the two broke apart. They both looked at Allie, who was knee deep in the water. She turned around, and called over her shoulder, “It’s too cold. I’m going inside!”
Angie looked at Jared, and smiled. “It’s only fair,” She shrugged.
Jared smiled too. Then they raced towards the water’s edge. Allie looked over her shoulder with wide eyes. She screamed as she saw them racing towards her.
Jared lifted her off the ground, and swung her over his shoulder. “Jared,” She laughed.
Angie picked up all the water she could, and threw it in the air. “I’m getting all wet,” Allie cried.
“That’s the point silly,” Angie giggled.
“Hold your breath,” Jared warned, and then threw Allie into the water. She came up gasping for air, but was laughing.
“Here I come,” Kate yelled, as she raced into the water. She tackled Jared, and Jared went into the water.
Angie couldn’t stop laughing. She was soon pulled into the water too. She held her breath, and just floated in the water. She liked the way her hair spread out in the water. Angie kept her eyes closed, but she could still imagine what was lying under the layers of water.
Strong arms lifted her out of the water. When she opened her eyes, Angie saw Jared’s worried face. “You alright?” He asked.
“I’m fine,” She laughed, “But you’re not going to be.”
Jared’s eyebrows pulled together, but his question was answered. Kate tackled him again, and Angie slipped from his grip so he would land in the water.
“Angela and I,” Kate announced, “Against Jared and Allie.”
“It’s on,” Jared growled, shaking his hair.
Angie laughed, and then slapped hands with Kate. Jared slugged his arm around Allie’s shoulders, and snapped, “It’s on!!”
“You just said that,” Kate growled, crossing her arms over her chest.
“Well I’m saying it a third time,” He warned, “IT’S ON!”
“Three, two,” Kate counted, “One.”
Angie let out a battle cry and attacked Jared. Jared held her away, and then pushed her under the water. Angie clawed at his shoulders, and pulled him down into the water. She sat on his stomach, and held him under the water. “I’m winning,” She told Kate, who had Allie in a headlock.
Jared grabbed her around the waist, allowing him to get out of the water. “I’m not a surfboard,” He told her with a silly smile. Angie laughed, and kicked her legs. Jared held her up though, and she was unable to touch the seafloor.
Angie screamed, and kicked and splashed. Jared turned her around and stared at her face. “Now I’m winning,” He proclaimed.
Angie was pressed tightly to Jared. Her hands were pressed tightly to his chest, and she was unable to move. She tried to kick her legs, but it was no use. She was stuck.
“How do you know you’re winning,” She asked, even though she knew he was winning.
Jared smiled at her, and then kissed her on the lips. His kiss was perfect, and different than the ones Ethan had given her. Even though it was a rough kiss, it wasn’t back like Ethan’s. It was like an urgent kiss. Like Jared needed to kiss her.
When they pulled away, Angie was smiling too. “That’s how I know I’m winning,” He murmured.
Kate and Allie stared at them with open mouths. Angie smiled at them, and shrugged. Kate and Allie came running over. Jared put Angie down, and his two sisters hugged her tightly, with huge smiles on their faces.
“Jared Shay,” Someone yelled. Everyone turned around to see Officer Ridly. He was standing where the water met the beach, with his hands on his hips.
“Yeah?” Jared yelled.
“You have some graffiti to paint over,” The Officer called.
Jared ran his hand over his head, and grumbled, “Oh yeah.” He turned to Angie and kissed her lightly on the forehead before he made his way towards the shore.
