"Ok, I'm heading out. See you tomorrow Jane."

"Alright. Have a good night Vincent."

The woman watched as her last coworker left, the light to his office flickering off before he walked away.

The faint ding of an elevator sounded through the empty hall, signaling that she was alone.

Jane sighed, wishing she could join him but unfortunately, her brother said she had to stay late, wanting her to meet the new member to their group.

To be quite honest though, she didn't really want to. She wanted nothing to do with whoever this new guy is.

Ever since they started on this little endeavor of theirs, it had always been just her and Jason. They vowed to take on the world together and make things right where the authorities had failed.

Obviously, no other high tier would believe them and no one else had the power to bring them to their knees.

If they wanted to initiate change, they would have to do it themselves. They had been making leaps and bounds in their progress with just the two of them, uncovering more and more each week.

So then why now of all times did Jason want to add in a third?

Her twin had mentioned great things about this mystery man, how he shared their ideals on changing things for the better and how he could give them great insight as to who to keep an eye on.

But it did little to sooth her annoyance. While she trusted her brother, she didn't trust others.

Too many backstabbing *ssholes trying to hurt them or gain something from her have proven that more than enough times.

What if this new guy was here just to spy on them? It wouldn't be the first time they've found someone snooping.

What would they do if all their plans were exposed thanks to Jason trusting some random high tier who just happened to 'believe' in what they did?

As much of an idealist as Jason was, he had to accept that other people out there who shared their goals were slim to none. Either because they were brainwashed, killed, or just truly did not believe in it, there was no one else besides them.

Yet for some reason, he still hung onto this delusion.

This was all just another un-needed headache. And she had yet to even meet the guy!

Jane was snapped from her thoughts when she heard something thud against the window.

Her eyes began to glow, reaching into her side drawer where she kept a switchblade.

There was absolutely no way someone could be outside her window. She was on the 6th floor and there was no balcony for anyone to perch on.

Levitation? No, she couldn't sense any active abilities.

She slowly opened the glass out into the cold night air, feeling the wind brush her cheeks. She saw nothing and was about to shut the window when she heard a voice.

"Uhm...hi?"

Jane swung her arm out, knife flying through the air in a silver arc.

The figure leaned back with a gasp, the woman just stopping at his neck.

They held a hand up. "Easy...I'm not here to fight." Slowly, he pushed her hand back slightly.

Jane kept the knife aimed at him as her gaze traveled up the figures bicep and to a set of broad shoulders. Their face was hidden under a mask and a hood of dark grey fell over their head, blocking them from view.

But Jane caught their gaze, staring into pooled mercury. The faintest glimmer of...something...sparked in their eyes. "You should really be careful where you swing, Miss."

The woman huffed, eyes narrowing as she readied her stance again, blade still pointed at the intruders throat. "Who the hell are you?! And how the hell are you out on my window sill?!"

The man scratched his head. "Uh, the roof? I just propelled down using a rope."

To emphasize his point, he tugged a thick piece of cable rope attached to a harness at his hip.

Well...that's an interesting way of going about it.

Raising an eyebrow, Jane eyed this mysterious stranger. "You still haven't answered my first question. Who are you?"

It took the man a moment before she could practically see the light bulb go off in his head. "Oh! I'm William. Jason sent me to meet you."

Oh...it's this guy.

How wonderful.

Jane stared at him for a second before turning away. "Great. We met. You can leave now."

She heard the man practically sputter. "W-wait, what?! Miss, I-"

Jane turned back around and held up a hand. "Just- stop. Look, I don't know what's so appealing about you to my brother, but we're fine as it is, thank you very much. We don't need help and we don't need yet another high tier meddling in our affairs. So go bother someone else who'll have you."

There was silence.

Then, "PFFFT-HAHAHAHAHA!"

Staring at him in bewilderment, Jane eyed him as he hunched forward, hands on his knees where he was crouched on the thin shelf of the sill.

"...Are you laughing at me?!"

William held up a hand as he caught his breath. "Oh...oh boy...no, sorry. I don't mean to laugh. Just-...it's kinda amusing that you think I'm a high tier."

Huh. Not exactly what she was expecting, but she wasn't surprised.

"Then...what exactly are you? An Elite?"

William shook his head. "Did Jason not mention it to you?"

Crossing her arms, Jane looked away. "I...don't recall if he did or not."

Truth be told, she didn't want to admit that she had tuned the man out when he mentioned the man's details, still salty about the whole situation.

A hum came from William. "Well, you don't have to worry about another high tier because I'm not one. In fact, I don't have an ability at all."

Jane's head snapped up in record time.

'No ability at-...WHAT?!'

She stared at him with wide eyes. "YOU'RE A CRIPPLE?!"

William held up a finger to where his lips would be, pointing to the open window.

Jane flushed a faint red at her outburst, but tried to state the absurd fact again anyways.

"You...you're a-...?"

The man rolled his eyes slightly. "Yes, I'm powerless, I have no ability, I'm a cripple, etc, etc. Believe me, you're not the first one to point that out."

There was a beat of silence as she stared at him. Then Jane pulled up a seat from her desk and sat down, putting her head in her hand, her blade still in her grip.

Whatever God was out there, may they have mercy on Jason because she was about to kill him.

A cripple?!

He took on a cripple?!

They're in the middle of trying to bust the authorities for their abuse and negligence to the public, one of their most important missions to date, and Jason takes on a man who has no abilities?!

Slowly, she found her words as she looked back up at the man. "How...the f*ck...did you manage to convince Jason to let you do this?! No, scratch that, why the hell did Jason agree to let you do this?!"

She ran her free hand through her hair with a frustrated huff before reaching over to her desk. "That's it, I'm calling him!"

William waved his hand. "Wait, stop. He didn't convince me or anything. I was the one who asked him if I could join."

Jane put the phone down as she stared at what she now knew was this absolutely insane mess of a human being.

Did he get into one too many fights as a kid?!

Was he suffering from some long term head trauma?!

Just what the hell was he thinking?!

She looked up staring at the man still crouched outside. "...HOW?!

Because seriously, how the f*ck was this even possible?!

"What, did you lie to him that you have an ability or a hidden trick or something?!"

William raised an eyebrow. "What? No, I-"

"The how the f*ck did you manage this?! Because there's no damn way that Jason would be stupid enough to take on someone who can't even-!"

William glared at her past his mask and before she knew it, Jane was pinned by him, her switchblade now out of her hand and against her throat, but not yet drawing blood.

"...defend...himself..." she finally got the rest of her sentence out.

Jane stared at him, mouth agape as his silver eyes had become sharp. It felt like they were piercing into her soul as he stared her down.

Holy sh*t...

She didn't even see him react...

Though to be fair, she wasn't expecting the surprise attack.

Before she could react by kicking him off, the man pulled the knife away and she could see a faint smirk behind his mask.

"Is that enough proof for you?"

He eventually got up, reaching out a hand to the stunned woman.

She stared at him in shock before accepting it, letting him pull her up with ease.

William handed her back the switchblade carefully before his tone got serious. "Look, I didn't con your brother or blackmail him into doing anything for me. We happened to cross paths one day and found out we had the same goal in mind."

He crossed his arms slightly. "He was just like you when we first met, but I earned his trust. I had to show him that just because I'm a cripple, it doesn't mean I don't have anything valuable to offer."

Jane looked away, letting his words sink in.

She sighed slightly. "You're right...I'm sorry. It's just...odd. Low tiers normally don't know how to fight back, least of all decently. So...it's just a bit hard to believe when my past experiences have told me otherwise."

William seemed to huff a small chuckle. "Yeah...I know I'm a bit out of the ordinary. But just like I've proven to Jason, I can help you guys. That is, if you're willing to give me a chance."

The white haired woman raised an eyebrow as William looked around. He eventually pointed to a chair across from hers. "May I sit?"

Jane nodded, also sitting back down and placing her knife on the desk as William sat down rather awkwardly in the seat.

He cleared his throat before speaking. "Jason hasn't made a final decision on if I'll join you two or not. In fact, the only reason he really asked me to come see you was so I could meet you and, well, gain your approval. Jason may trust me, but he also trusts you and your judgement. Meeting you is like a final test for me."

Golden eyes stared at him as she thought about what he was saying. "So, if I wanted to, I could just say no and you wouldn't come here again?"

William nodded. "Look Miss...uhm..."

"Jane."

He nodded. "Jane...I'm not going to beg or grovel for you to accept me. But I don't want to make a bad impression on you either. Whether you decide to accept me or not isn't going to alter my views on changing things for the better. I'll still do what I can and make sure not to hinder your work. But if we both have the same goals in mind and we both want to work towards it, I believe it best for us to work together. But it's neither mine or Jason's decision. This is entirely up to you."

Jane stared at him for a minute.

In all the time she's known others, all anyone had ever done was ask things of her and from her.

To them, her decision didn't matter. She wasn't allowed to make choices unless it was Jason.

Now though, William was giving her that choice. He was giving her every chance to say no if she wanted to.

Looking away, she held her chin as she thought, not knowing what to think exactly.

William decided to stand up. "Would it help if I left so you can think about it?"

Jane looked up at him before giving a small nod. "Yes, that would be helpful."

The man nodded, turning towards the window. "Then I'll take my le-"

The ding of an elevator sounded through the hallway and immediately, Jane knew they were screwed.

There was no way she could hide an entire person from view! The entire wall to the hallway was made of glass!

Oh f*ck, how would she explain to whoever it was about a strangely dressed man in her office?!

Jane saw Vincent round the corner as he waved slightly, still frozen in shock. "Hi Jane. I forgot some paperwork here that I need to grab really quick-...you ok? You look a little pale."

It was then that the woman finally looked around her.

The chair was back in place, the window was closed, but above all, William was gone. It was as if he straight up vanished.

"Jane?"

She snapped her head back, feeling like she was somewhere within a weird dream.

Crossing her arms, she shifted slightly. "Y-yes! Yeah, I'm perfectly fine Vincent. Just late hours getting to me I guess."

Vincent stared at her for a second before shrugging one shoulder, buying her excuse. "Alright. Well, make sure not to stay too late. Have a good night."

She waved as he left, going back the way he came.

The woman stood there for a minute until she heard the elevator before looking around.

How the hell did he just-?

"Phew, that was a close one."

Jane almost jumped out of her skin when she looked up at the ceiling, seeing William braced between two wooden rafters.

"How the f*ck did you get up there...?!"

William tilted his head in a slight shrug. "Well, it's just one of my many 'hidden tricks.'"

Then he winked. He actually winked.

Forget Jason, someone have mercy on Jane cause she was not going to survive with this man around.

.

.

.

William had departed as promised, leaving Jane alone to her thoughts.

He certainly was talented, she'll give him that. But could they actually trust him to help?

'I'll still do what I can and make sure not to hinder your work.'

Jane closed her eyes.

There had been a sort of passion in his voice when speaking to her. It was one she rarely saw in people nowadays.

And if he was truthful, it would make sense why he'd want to help. He was at the bottom of the ladder and any sort of change they could bring around would greatly benefit him and others of the sort.

He was even dedicated enough to work on these goals himself whether he received their help or not, yet not selfish enough to hurt the progress they've made.

It...was refreshing in a way. Even though he didn't have an ability, he didn't seem to let that stop him from trying to make a difference and actually doing something despite what others may tell him.

Call her a softie or weak or whatever, but not even two hours after William left, she had called Jason, telling him that she was in agreement.

Maybe slightly reluctant mind you, but there was something about William that she wanted to understand more of.

He was an enigma.

A cripple with expert combat training who could sneak around like it was nothing.

What was he? Some sort of spy?

She almost laughed to herself. That was absolutely ridiculous.

.

.

.

It wasn't until the next day that Jason gave her the confirmation.

She then proceeded to face plant into her desk with a groan.

How the hell did she not realize it sooner?!

The sneaking around, the gear, the outfit, even his combat skills. That came from years of training and experience; experience that only a select few had.

When told about the encounter, Jason had only stifled a chuckle and patted her back in a 'there, there' manner.

"It's really ok Jane. Most people get that impression when they find out he doesn't have an ability."

Jane lifted her head up. "Yes, but I feel so stupid now! I made a fool of myself in front of the guy when he's a-!" She looked around really fast before lowering her voice. "when he's a damn spy...!"

Jason couldn't help his laugh this time, almost falling out of his chair.

Jane glared at him, her gaze heated. Now he understood why Jason liked William so much. They both loved to laugh at her misfortune.

Crossing her arms and turning away, she stared out the window as Jason pulled himself together.

"Aw, come on Jane. Don't be like that. Really, he doesn't take it to heart. And if it makes you feel better, he was nervous about meeting you to begin with."

Raising an eyebrow, Jane looked to him only to receive a nod. "Oh believe me, I've bragged about your skills enough times to know you aren't someone to mess with. While he may have gotten the jump on you, he knows damn well what'll happen if he tries anything serious."

He leaned back in his seat, hands folded behind his head. "So in a way, he was trying to prove himself to you."

Jane looked down, brows furrowed.

But she didn't dwell on it for long until Jason tapped her shoulder. "Now, if you're done sulking, let's go. We have a press conference to attend soon."

Nodding, Jane eventually peeled herself from her desk and followed Jason out to the car.

.

.

.

The press conference was about as boring as she thought it would be.

Just more high ranks talking about their start up companies and even one with a weird name called 'NXGen' who was planning on doing ability research should they get the funds for their projects.

Thankfully, neither her nor Jason had to speak at any of the panels. Just be in attendance.

It was boring enough that even Jason of all people was losing interest with the panels. She was pretty sure that was how the rest of the day was going to go.

And it was. Until a man came to sit next to her, a reporter/writers badge around his neck. He was careful not to bump into her as he settled down in his seat. "Ah, pardon me, Miss."

Her eyes had snapped wide open then.

She knew that voice and quickly, she whipped her head to the side to take a closer look. Midnight locks were gelled and styled, a serene smile pulling at his lips and just like from the night before, mercury was swirled in his eyes. A notebook and pen were clasped in his hand and a white binder was tucked under his arm.

Jane looked back and forth before even daring to whisper his name.

"William...?"

The man looked at her out of the corner of his eye, but the edge of his mouth kicked up in a warm smile. "Lovely to see you again, Jane."

Jane was left speechless as the panel began, reporters asking questions here and there.

Most of it was purely mundane.

Questions were asked about what they hoped to accomplish, goals they had for the future, if they were planning on expanding. Overall, pretty boring.

So when Jane saw William raise his hand, she was expecting another dry question to leave his lips.

But no. Just like with everything else about him, nothing was ordinary about William.

Unlike the other reporters, he didn't ask questions that would show off their highlights.

He asked factual questions on their history, how they planned on furthering their company besides any outside help they may receive. He even managed to get exact numbers on the number of volunteers who had offered to participate in their projects.

To most, many just saw it as thorough questions from a writer. But to Jane, she saw exactly what he was doing.

Intel gathering.

His questions were specific, but not enough that others would easily catch on. They always hovered around what he wanted to actually know, practically coaxing the information from them until he had enough pieces that he could put the rest together himself.

But he made sure to keep the conversation light, almost casual to an extent. A joke or two here and there, small compliments and words of praise that kept their focus on their own highlights. It was genius in a way.

Jane couldn't help but be slightly in awe.

There was a natural charisma about him, drawing his audience in and he kept his questions simple but factual, enough so that he wouldn't end up boring everyone. It was hard not to answer him truthfully when he made the conversation flow so easily.

Soon enough though, he had nodded, thanking the panel for their time before sitting back down.

Jane didn't realize she was staring until she fell her twin elbow her in the side, a sh*t-eating grin lining his face.

Yeah, now she could see why Jason wanted him to join.

And quite frankly, she also wanted to see how this would play out.
