Tommy POV
"Happy birthday Tommy!" Mum said handing me a present
"Thank you mum" I say
"I'm sorry dear but we couldn't afford a cake so I just got you a lollipop."
"Ooohh thank you mummy! I love lollipops, where's daddy?"
"He's probably at the bar, you know how he is"
"Oh yeah"
"Alrighty dear now I want you to open that present tomorrow ok?"
"Ummm ok!"
"Ok your dad will be home soon so you need to go to bed"
"Ok goodnight mummy! I love you"
"I love you too dear"
~Next day~Still in flashback~
When I woke up I saw a note on my dresser
My dearest Tommy,
I love you so much and I'm sorry I did this but I just couldn't handle your father anymore. I hope you like your gift I will leave it to you to open it. It will be valid forever my dear. I really wish I could've taken you with me but sadly, I wouldn't be able to support you. I truly wish I didn't have to leave you with that awful man but I had to. I will miss you so much.
A few tips for your father
- Don't raise your voice
- Don't swing back
- Try not to scream
- If he limits your food, don't sneak it
- Don't tell anyone, as much as I want you out of that house he might find a way to get you back
- Leave on your 18th birthday, he cant force you to stay then

Karl's POV
I walk in and see him holding a present and a piece of paper. The wrapping looks warn but the actual box is perfectly intact.
"If you are alright with talking about it, what's that?" I say with a soft smile.
He was clearly hurt from what Dream said
"My mum gave it to me on my birthday, the day before she left"
"What's inside?"
"I'm not sure to be honest, I could never bring myself to opening it"
"And the piece of paper?"
"A note she gave me before she left"
"Oh" I walked over to his bed
"Am I annoying? Be honest"
"No of course not, Dream was just being an ass, wait you changed out of your skirt?"
"Yeah I guess dream was right I was just looking for attention"
"No you weren't but where is it?"
He chuckled a bit "I got mad and cut it"
"Better than cutting yourself I guess"
"I'm actually really proud of myself, I mean I sound like such an arse but I'm proud I didnt cut"
"I'm proud of you as well. We are going to go to my house now alright?"
"Oh thank god I don't want to be here right now"
"They all went to bed and I will tell them we left"
"Ok and Karl?"
"Yeah?"
"Thank you"
"Of course"
~Timeskip in the car to go to Karl's house~
"Tommy you should get some rest it is going to take a bit"
"Ok I will, Thank you again"
"No problem and Tommy?"
"Yes"
"I'm proud of you"
He just smiled
Tommy's POV
I smile. Someone is proud of me, I fall asleep fairly quickly
I wake up in the car, gasping for air.
"Hey hey hey, you're alright, you're alright. I'm here."
Of course a nightmare
"Sorry I had a nightmare"
"You don't have to say sorry"
"Hmm"
"What?"
"When I woke up, you didn't tell me to calm down or just breathe"
"I have nightmares too, I know it wont help"
"Oh that makes sense"
"Do you want to talk about it? If you don't I understand but I'm always here"
I look at the clock
3:34am
"I was back with my dad, you had l-left me with him and he was standing over me. He had a knife in one hand and his belt tied to the other. He was sober which makes it even scarier. When he's sober he beats me twice as hard and I don't know why."
I just realized I was crying.
"I'm so sorry"
"Why are you apologizing? You didn't do anything wrong"
"Well I have been suspecting something going on for a while with your father but I was just to scared to ask you about it. I hope you're not mad at me"
"No I'm not mad but you could've asked me about it, I probably would've freaked out but It would've been nice to talk to someone about it"
"I'm sorry, I should've said something"
"Don't worry about it really it's ok"
"Is there anything I can do to make it up to you?"
"Karl, you got me out of that hell hole I think we're even"
"Are you sure"
"Yes I'm sure"
"Ok you can go back to sleep if you would like"
"I think I'm going to stay up, it's always hard to go back to sleep after a nightmare especially a new one"
"Ok that's fine" he says with a kind smile
"Are you hungry?"
I was dreading that question
"Y-yes" I say sadly
"You're allowed to be hungry. What would you like?"
"Anything's fine" I say almost instantly
"How about McDonalds?"
"What if I gain weight? Did I actually just say that?"
"Tommy you wont gain weight but even if you do, your dad can't get to you"
"He can't get to me. I like that"
Karl just smiles as he pulls into a McDonalds
"What would you like?"
"Chicken nuggets please" I say ashamed
"How many?"
"4 actually can I have 6"
"Yes of course and to drink?" He says happy because I'm eating
"Coke please" I answer, still ashamed
"You don't have to be ashamed everyone eats"
I sigh "Yeah I know it's just my dad-nevermind I've talked too much already"
"No, no please tell me I just have to order" he says reassuringly
"Ok" I say with a smile
"Hi can I get a 6 piece chicken nugget meal with coke to drink and a BigMac meal with a Monster to drink" (Lets just pretend they have monsters)
He drives up to the window
"That will be $11.18"
I reach to grab my wallet to pay but Karl pays first
"Can you please wait up there?"
"Sure"
I check the clock
3:58am
"I can pay you for my half"
"Don't worry about it" He says with a smile
"What were you going to say earlier? Before I had to order" He says
"My dad always used to make fun of people who were overweight and he did it to me. He used to put me in a room and draw a black circle wherever he wanted me to lose weight. If the weight wasn't lost in a month he would beat me. I was never and will never be good enough. He convinced me I didn't deserve food and now I think I've convinced myself the same thing"
Karl's POV
I felt a tear run down my face as he said this.
"I am so sorry Tommy. You are good enough. You deserve food. Now you're with me and you are safe"
"Thank you Karl that means a lot to me. You are the first person I've ever opened up to about this stuff"
"Well I'm always here"
Then the drive thru worker knocked on my window and gave me the food
"Oh and Tommy"
"Yeah?"
"I'm not leaving you. Ever."
