Song for this chapter: Merry-Go-Round - Joe Hisaishi (yes, Howl's Moving Castle )

A/N: totally spaced and meant to post this last chap, but here's Violet's outift y'all. I didn't give her a dress or anything too formal for a reason you'll find out soon....

Violet POV:

The party had already been in full effect when Dabi and I ascended the gilded stairs, arm and arm.

It was incredibly crowded-which was good for what we had planned tonight. The more people scattered around the giant area, the less likely I'll be noticed missing when the time comes.

Everyone was dressed incredibly nice, with waiters expertly weaving in and out of crowds holding food and drink trays, and a nice orchestra of light classical music playing in the corner.

As expected of what I've seen of Midas' taste so far, the entire scene was pretty extravagant.

But, 'extravagant' doesn't always mean 'impressive' in the eyes of a certain someone.

"Bunch of pricks, huh?" Dabi commented to me at a loud, comfortable volume, making the nicely dressed couple chatting atop the stairs glare at us.

I gave a nervous laugh and wave of apology to the pair as Dabi and I continued descending the endless staircase. Though, I couldn't say I felt all that bad. Anyone who's here is either a Midas recruit, or looking to be.

"I mean, seriously. What if I just want a fucking beer?" The cranky stitched man followed up, gesturing to everyone's matching gold champagne glasses that seemed to multiply with every look.

"Well, then I'd say you can have champagne or candied whale semen. Which would you rather have?" I asked teasingly, causing Dabi to scrunch up his studded nose in disgust as we walked.

"Shit. I'd rather have your cooking." He murmured lightly, causing me to roll my eyes in amusement and lightly nudge his shoulder with my own.

"My cooking could be amazing for all you know." I defended, studying Dabi's side profile with an internal drool.

Sure, his face is burned, but for some reason, he still looks pretty clean cut tonight. The countless piercings in his face and nose are gleaming brightly against the lights of the place, and his hair looks clean and even a bit windswept, in a way that makes me wanna run my hands through it-

"I'll bet all my hoodrat shit that your cooking is awful." Dabi commented casually, causing me to giggle as I warmed into his side closer.

"You know, I don't even know how to take that. But, let's just leave it at screw you." I smirked, causing my date for the night to look at me with raised brows of challenge.

"Oh? What happened to the swearing? Did you wear yourself out from it this morning?" He asked condescendingly, allowing me to grip his arm more securely when a slippery curved stair was coming our way.

"That? Oh, that was just a moment of weakness. It won't happen again-and yes." I uttered, hearing Dabi hum in genuine amusement for my antics.

He quickly brought his free hand up to his face, acting as if he was adjusting one of the staples on his cheek, in order to conceal the smile that wanted to curve on his lips.

"You're a quirky one, sunshine." He murmured warmly, clearing his throat a bit to get rid of the affection that unintentionally creeped into his voice.

I smiled softly at his words, knowing they were meant as a compliment coming from Dabi.

"Well, back 'atcha.'" I tried cooly, failing with a dorkiness that made Dabi and his clean cut face look up at the decorated ceiling when we descended the last stair.

"Ugh, hold on. Don't annoy me, yet. The night's only just started. At least let me drink first." He teased, causing me to laugh and let him lead as we made our way through the suffocating crowd of beautiful people.

For once, Dabi actually seemed to be following directions as he made the way to the assigned place him and I, along with Akio, all agreed to meet up. We came to this mansion together. It's only appropriate in the eyes of others that we're seen conversing with each other a bit, before I run off. Don't want to do anything out of the ordinary tonight.

That familiar head of hair came into view a few moments later as Dabi and I reached the assigned standing cocktail table. Akio had his back turned to us, resting his elbow against the table clothed table with his stance lined up in a way that let me know he was definitely flirting with someone.

Dabi smirked ferally at the sight, clearly having some obnoxious karma up his sleeve as he spoke loudly.

"Hey. Don't go giving another person crabs now, Lamp Shade. I still haven't forgiven you for last night." He chimed out snarky, lugging a harsh, mocking arm of friendship around Akio before grinning knowingly at the handsome guy he was flirting with.

I pressed my lips together at Dabi's way of messing with Akio, knowing he got to my best friend when his glowy orange eyes rolled in annoyance.

"A-Agh. He's kidding. Don't listen to him. He's not even all there, if you know what I mean. Cuckoo." Akio said to the man cooly, clearly trying to play off Dabi's cockblock.

But, his possible one night stand had already heard enough as he quickly grabbed his glass of champagne, briskly starting to retreat from the area as Dabi cackled rudely.

"Hey-Hold on, where are you going? He's kidding. He's-ahhh, you fucker..." Akio groaned lazily, quickly shrugging Dabi's arm off as he turned to face him in annoyance. "Can't a guy try to get laid in peace around here?"

"No. You deserve to be miserable for the rest of your life. And, anyways, that's for bugging the hell out of me at the club a few weeks ago." Dabi said bluntly, giving a proud look of glee when he saw how genuinely annoyed Akio was now.

The sexually frustrated bright man looked rather dull now as he took a dry sip of his champagne, mumbling curses under his breath about how much he hated Dabi.

I quickly made myself comfortable between my two friends, ruffling up Akio's hair encouragingly as I tried to hype him back up.

"Ahh, don't you worry about it, buddy. You're a beautiful man. You can easily find another..." I started off honestly, before I just couldn't resist adding on. "If a man doesn't love you for your crabs, he's not the one."

Dabi broke out into a genuine laugh now as Akio glared at me for my joke. But, even with the glare, his lips curled up in a smirk of fun, allowing me to squeeze hug him in giggling apology.

"Vi, I'm wounded. I never thought the day would come when you'd turn on me." He fake pouted, wrapping his arms around me for a friendly hug before swaying us back and forth.

I rolled my eyes lightly as I squeezed him vigorously, not even caring about the completely un-elegant scene the three of us were probably making at the moment.

"Pleaaase, I'd never turn on you." I reassured innocently, giving his suit clad back one more pat before releasing him.

"Both of you knock off the sappy shit before I hurl all over you." Dabi commented sourly, grabbing Akio's half full champagne glass off the cocktail table before downing the rest of it in one gulp.

"Ohhh, you hush." I reprimanded him softly, watching Akio's mouth open with a retort.

Before his eyes quickly looked behind Dabi and I, causing the sight to make his shoulders drop.

"Besides, if you're gonna hurl anywhere, do it behind you." He murmured in warning, making Dabi and I turn around to see what he saw coming towards us.

Ohhhh, great. Of course.

"Looking dapper as always, you two." Euphoria said to my two friends, holding up her champagne glass for a fake cheers.

My shoulders tensed up nervously, but I still shot the gorgeous woman a kind smile as she approached our group now.

"And you look like shit. Now, all the facts have been stated." Dabi retorted brutally honest, deciding now was the time to snake a protective hand to my back.

He's just doing it cause we're supposed to be a couple. No other reason.

Euphoria simply rolled her eyes at Dabi's comment, not seeming as if she had anything up her sleeve just yet as she turned to me.

I stiffened a bit and felt my palms sweat as Euphoria assessed me in her outfit, unable to stop myself from taking in her appearance as well.

Perfect as usual. This time she decided to sport a tight light blue dress with some nude heels to match. She had on a new necklace, too.

Contrasted to the bright silver diamond she wore on her neck yesterday, now she had a bright orange one instead. It didn't really go with her outfit, but I assume Midas must be the type to give her new things everyday. Regardless, definitely a 10/10!

"And youuu," she started off to me vaguely, giving her little fingers a snap like she forgot my name.

"Violet." I reminded her in a little annoyance, causing her to quickly remember the realization.

"That's right. Violet. You look good, too." She complimented casually, not adding any of her usual bully comments to the end of that.

I furrowed my brows at her unexpected attitude, deciding to just roll with it before I found myself under wrath once more.

"Oh? Wow, really?? Ummm, thanks..." I muttered curiously and relieved, running a hand through my hair a bit awkwardly as I tried to make sense of her compliment.

She simply smiled, once again not seeming to have any retorts up her sleeve as she addressed our trio as a whole now.

"Well, feel free to make some rounds to the drink and food tables. It's all free, of course. Midas was sad he was unable to attend tonight, but an offshore meeting called him elsewhere. I'll be hosting in his place." She explained a bit too nicely, giving us a nod before quickly excusing herself from our posse.

No one in our group said a word, as Euphoria wiggled her way between Dabi and I...slowly sauntering off to make her rounds of greetings.

"That was weird." I mumbled slightly dazed, causing Dabi to grunt dryly in reply as he watched Euphoria walk off suspiciously.

Akio pursed his lips in contemplation before giving a dismissive shrug to his shoulders.

"Eh. Yes and no. I saw her snorting something before you guys showed up. I'm sure that whatever the hell it was...it's definitely helping with her mood." He pointed out, looking at Euphoria in annoyance before giving his head a small shake.

"Is that so? Damn. The only thing I want from her." Dabi mumbled dryly, causing me to chuckle softly.

"Whatever. She's not our priority. Right now, anyways. What is our priority, is-" Akio mumbled quietly, quickly stopping his sentence when a waiter came over to our area with a tray of champagne glasses.

I jumped slightly at the intrusion, yet admittedly a little thankful for the small pick-me-up as I grabbed myself a gold encrusted glass.

"Do you want one?" I murmured to Dabi warmly, watching him scoff and scrunch up his nose in disgust at the idea.

"If I was a prissy bitch, then maybe." He commented obnoxiously, gesturing to the way Akio quickly swiped another glass off the tray.

"Let's not forget you drank my first glass, bitch." Akio chimed in, pursing his lips to the rim of his cup in content as he sipped.

I rolled my eyes at Dabi's sass, ignoring his denial as I turned back to the waiter.

"I'll take one more of those." I whispered to him knowingly, grabbing a glass for Dabi as I knew there'd come a point when he wanted it.

With my two glasses in hand, I took a sip of my own, humming softly in delight for the sweet flavor.

"Mm. That's good champagne." I murmured, causing Akio to laugh.

"Says the girl who buys box wine at the dollar store." He teased.

"Anddd, what's wrong with that? You know what they say. Nothing says 'party' like a good value!" I said, causing Dabi to groan and quickly swipe my glass out of my hand now.

"If you're gonna talk nerd all night, I'm gonna need this." He said, looking down at me with challenge.

"Excuse me, Mr. Edgy. That was my cup." I murmured, attempting to reprimand him-and failing.

Dabi knew I failed, too, as he looked at me smugly, raising the glass to his lips daringly.

"Was it? Cool story. Don't tell me more." He snickered like a little bully, giving the gold glass a taunting swirl.

I looked at him with a light glare, raising my brow with challenge as he took a drink while meeting my gaze.

He didn't even rotate the rim of the cup. He simply molded his lips over my lipstick imprint. Surely, that was...an accident...

Dabi removed his lips from the cup a few moments later, subtly gliding his tongue along his bottom lip to savor the residues of the flavor.

"Hm. Tastes like strawberry." Dabi commented suggestively, yet we both knew the champagne wasn't strawberry flavored.

That sounds like a flirt. Interesting, coming from the guy who claims to hate me.

My cheeks suddenly began to feel warm as I pressed my lips together and tasted my strawberry flavored gloss, causing me to exhale a small breath and run a hand through my hair in frustration.

What type of frustration, you may ask? Oh! You don't wanna know!

His signals are so confusing. I hate this man. I hate him so much, I wanna make out with him.

"As someone who only lives off cigarettes and energy drinks, I'm surprised you even know what a strawberry tastes like." I huffed slightly, earning a snort from Akio.

"Damn, Vi. That sip of one percent alcohol is really coursing through your veins now, huh?" He laughed, as Dabi rolled his eyes.

"And, besides, they have strawberry flavored energy drinks. Duh." Dabi followed up casually, trailing his bored half lidded gaze around the premise as he sipped from my cup once more.

I scrunched my lips in only light annoyance, brought back to the ambiance of the party when I heard Euphora's sultry laugh a few feet away from us.

She was schmoozing a couple pretty darn good, radiating confidence and control that would make anyone wanna listen.

Anyone, except Dabi, Akio, and I, considering the antics we're about to commit right under her nose.

The thoughts made my heart jump out of my chest in nerves, causing me to turn back to my friends with slightly more focus as I just wanted to rip the bandaid off this anticipation and complete the job successfully.

"So," I started out a little quieter, effectively gaining Dabi and Akio's attention. "Akio....you were speaking of...priorities for the night, just a minute ago. What are these priorities, exactly?"

In other words, I'm asking what our plan is for completing this mission.

Akio nodded in acknowledgement to my words, setting his champagne glass down on the cocktail table next to us as he decided to get down to business.

"Right. Well, we're in good shape right now. I've already been in contact with Kurogiri. He's all eyes in at the hotel, ready to transport anyone anywhere, once we give him our signal." He explained, adding in a fake smile at the end of his words when a passerby gave him a nod.

I paused the conversation, smiling at the stranger as well, while Dabi glared the way he usually would.

"Alright. And what is the 'signal' exactly?" I uttered quietly once our space was clear.

Akio remained leaning back against the table, reaching into his pocket for something as casual as possible.

"Simple," he started out before pulling out his phone. "This is our signal. Vi, when you're ready for 'Giri to transport you, just send him a quick text. Your portal should be ready within seconds after that. I gave him the layout of the third floor. He should be good to go, in terms of getting you to the right place."

I nodded softly in understanding, hearing the broody stitched man next to me hum condescendingly.

"And I suppose you just expect me to sit in the corner, doing jack shit with a thumb up my ass, right?" He questioned rhetorically, downing the rest of my champagne in one gulp.

"Well, even though I'm sure that's no different from what you normally do..." Akio started off with a grumble, causing Dabi to smirk as he sensed the irritation. "I actually have a different plan for you, Dabs."

"Do you now? Then enlighten me on the fuckery." Dabi mocked out with a wave of his hand, resting his shoulder against mine comfortably.

Akio took a sip out of his glass to figure out how to phrase his proposition, before muttering a small 'fuck it,' and going for bluntness.

"Euphoria. You're gonna distract her. That's your involvement tonight-no 'ifs,' 'ands,' or 'buts,' please." He groaned out, quickly holding his hand up in protest when Dabi laughed off the request dismissively.

"Fuck no. I can't stand that bitch. What else you got?" He stated matter of factly, causing Akio to roll his eyes closed in losing patience.

"Nothing, because she's one of the main obstacles to this night. Her and Kaito are the only ones who've met Violet. Therefore, they're gonna be the only ones who are suspicious of her whereabouts. The plan was for you to distract Euphoria, while I go over to that corner and distract Kaito and his little posse of goons." Akio explained, barely nodding towards the opposite corner of the venue.

I subtly followed his nod, confirming the sight of the yellow eyed man I met yesterday. Kaito was actually dressed up now, rather than slumming it in the tattered clothes he wore yesterday. But, for some reason, even with his hair slicked back and a suit on....he looked even more intimidating now...sitting back in one of the chairs, with an army of followers surrounding him.

I assume he's popular, here at Midas' mansion. It makes me wonder about who else has power here, other than Midas, of course. Euphoria is one. Kaito is another.

Are there more? I guess that's what tonight is about figuring out.

But, regardless, my social anxiety almost prefers my job in this of going somewhere where no people are supposed to be, compared to Akio's job of having to assert himself into that mess...

"Forget it. I'll deal with Ugly over there. You take that crazy bitch." Dabi fought back naggingly, immediately locking his eyes on Kaito like a target as he clearly meant to cause problems.

Akio's shoulders slumped slightly at Dabi's problematic attitude.

"No-saying stuff like that is exactly why you can't go over there. You and I aren't supposed to do anything that's gonna draw attention to us, Dabi. You'll be able to handle Euphoria better than Kaito." He concluded matter of factly, causing Dabi to start getting genuinely agitated with Akio's leadership.

As expected. Both of these guys have incredibly strong personalities. But, honestly, the more I see them interact together....I think they're more alike than they realize...or would like to admit.

"You're stupid to think I can't handle both. Both of them are equal dipshits. You just wanna call the shots and that's not happening, roach boy." Dabi challenged grumpily.

Akio chuckled dryly as he started to get more irritated, shrugging his shoulders condescendingly.

"Actually, I thought you'd be better with Euphoria cause your social skills and personality are shit. And anyone who's dumb enough to like you-let alone, hookup with you, clearly has some issues with common sense." He commented, before his gaze gaped in realization and he quickly turned to me. "Oop-No offense, Vi."

My eyes widened at Akio unintentionally calling out my feelings for Dabi, making me hold my hands up in frustration. Not that my thirst for this psycho killer wasn't already obvious enough.

"Dude. Seriously?" I reprimanded Akio knowingly, giving him a small sneer of irritation for blabbing his mouth.

The situation continued to fall apart as Akio cringed softly, opening his mouth to apologize before Dabi chimed in obliviously.

"I'm not going over there. I'll do things my own way." He concluded stubbornly, already starting to walk away before Akio gripped his shoulder firmly.

"Dabi, come on. Stop purposely trying to make this harder." I groaned, scoffing in irritation with both of my partners now.

"You're going over there, you stubborn piece of shit." My best friend growled out impatiently, causing Dabi's eyes to start darkening in a fight mood as he slapped Akio's hand off him.

"Oh yeah? Who's gonna make me? You and your crabs?" He snickered ferally, turning back around to face Akio in challenge.

Akio grit down on his teeth, clenching his fists together in frustration as his anger slowly began to bubble over.

"I don't have crabs! Stop telling everyone I have crabs!" He exclaimed a little too loudly, drawing a few eyes over to our area in a way that caused me to groan.

This teamwork is going nicely so far!

I face palmed slightly as Akio and Dabi began to bicker, hearing the stitched man egging my hot-headed friend on with another comment, but I was more focused on trying to fix this.

After all, there needs to be at least one reasonable person in all groups!

"Alright-hey-alright!! No one has crabs-and-that's a harsh thing to call Dabi-Let's all just relax here!!" I groaned out tiredly, placing a hand on both of their shoulders before pinching their skin harshly.

"Ow." Akio hissed out at the same time Dabi did some weird, involuntary arm spasm.

Regardless, both men stopped their arguing, turning to me with glares of their own.

Okay. Come on. I'm the main character, after all. Time for some good pep talk.

"Uhhh....listen you guys," I started off with a smile, giving a small wave of victory with my fist as I continued.

"I know this situation isn't ideal. And I know you hate each other. And I know the plan is still pretty shaky, but that we have no other options. And I also know we're being watched, and that this assignment might go very...poorly......I...I also know that failure would mean a...hmm..a full blown Midas takeover.....oof, definitely death for us. Crap, I also know I haven't paid my rent, yet, to my landlord and I don't wanna die being in debt....ugh, and...andddd..."

Where was I going with this?

Akio and Dabi gave me deadpan glares as my attempts to make the situation better only made it worse.

My lips scrunched up in irritation as my face turned sour, causing me to ditch the pep talk and say what we all wanna hear instead.

"You know what, fine. Can we just do this and get it over with? How about that approach? Can we all agree on that?" I questioned dryly, crossing my arms in resigned annoyance.

But, it seems my negativity was exactly what Akio and Dabi needed as both men seemed to temporarily stop the attack at each other's throats, muttering their own grievances about the other before responding.

"I don't fucking care." Dabi retorted grumpily, matching Akio's simultaneous 'whatever.'

Ugh. Weirdos.

Regardless, I pressed my lips together and nodded encouragingly, finally placing down my own champagne glass as I prepared to get things into motion.

"Good then. I assume step one of the plan-making our appearance, is completed? We've been chatting here for over thirty minutes. Not a weird time for me to head to the 'bathroom.' Right?" I questioned, attempting to stay as calm as possible when my heartbeat began to pick up.

Luckily, the boys didn't seem to notice my nerves, with both of them settling into seriousness and looking to their assigned targets begrudgingly.

Kaito was still at his spot in the corner, smoothing out the jacket of his all white suit with a smug grin as he spoke to his 'fans.' He had a new drink in his hand now, making me wonder how much he's had tonight. Definitely more than three or four by now, and the night's still young.

Euphoria had now moved spots. Instead of conversing with 'her' guests, she was seated at the swanky bar on the opposite end of the venue, swirling an olive around in her martini with her legs crossed elegantly.

She was also currently alone. Perfect timing there for Dabi to swoop in.

"You're right in saying we should move onto step two of the plan." Akio started off, turning his eyes away from Kaito to face Dabi and I. "But, we all came to this mansion together, and it's weird if you break away now without talking to anyone else first. I think now's the time to split-up and set the plan in place."

Akio swiped his glass of champagne off the cocktail table, giving his dark red suit jacket a quick shrug down before zeroing his gaze in on Kaito once more.

"I'll distract Kaito and his guys for the time being. Vi, Dabi, you two go over to Euphoria together and start talking her up at the bar. After five minutes, Vi will excuse herself to go to the bathroom. Euphoria already knows how uncomfortable she is here, she wouldn't assume her to wander anywhere else. Pretend you're going to the bathroom, and once you're out of camera range....give Kurogiri a ring." He explained clearly, pulling his phone out of his dress pant pockets once more.

"And the last thing. Violet, keep your phone unlocked and navigated to Dabi or I's number when you scope out the third floor. If you run into trouble, you may not have time to unlock it so quickly and dial us for help. That simple screen tap may be the only way you can get in contact with us." Akio finished, causing me to nod and quickly pat my bag in reassurance to his point.

A buzz of dread swirled around in my chest as I realized the split up would begin now. First, Dabi and I would be separated from Akio. Then, all three of us would be separated from each other to complete the mission. It all depends on our teamwork.

And, as much as Dabi and Akio fight like babies, I have to say I enjoy hanging out with the three of them together. It just feels right, and even if they don't get along....they seemed to figure out how to work off each other's personalities surprisingly fast.

I swallowed thickly at my nerves about splitting up, hearing the iron and ivory clock somewhere on the premise chime with a new hour.

"Alright. Enough of this shit. Are we gonna do this, or not?" Dabi piped up impatiently, already snaking his hand back to my waist and pulling me back into him.

I hate to say how much it eased my nerves. His touch so gentle and warm. So reassuring and intimate. But, also meant to be so 'fake' and 'emotionless'. Right?

"Yeah. The night's still young, but not for long." Akio concluded, turning his glowy eyes from Dabi to me with a parting smile.

My face was written with worry as I looked to Akio, hating the way my anxiety thought up scenarios of the worst possible case.

I can't lose him. I can't lose my best friend. I can't lose another person.

"Be careful, okay?" I said to Akio seriously, quickly walking out of Dabi's hold to throw my arms around my best friend.

Dabi willingly released me, surprisingly giving me the quick moment to say goodbye to Akio for now. Sure, he scoffed and muttered complaints, but he still complied and waited no less.

Akio hugged me back chastely, giving my back a soft, friendly pat as he spoke.

"Hey. Don't worry about me. I got the easy job. You got the hard job, but that doesn't matter. Nothing's gonna happen to you, okay? I won't allow it." He reassured me softly, taking a break from his leadership hero role to play the best friend role once more.

I nodded softly to his point, giving him one more friendly squeeze before releasing him.

Turning on my heel, I walked back towards Dabi...feeling my heart squeeze when he lazily extended his arm out for me to grab. My heart only squeezed more when I grabbed it and he used it as leverage to gently pull me into his chest, gliding his hand so convincingly down my back, before curling it to my waist.

Neither of us said anything about the touch, yet we both knew our thoughts mingled with a million words about the affection.

I cleared my throat softly and turned around to face Akio once more, giving him a small parting smile as we went our separate ways.

"Good luck. I'll be waiting for your signal." I murmured to him, before Dabi spoke up.

"I'm still waiting to kill you." He snickered obnoxiously, unintentionally lightening the serious mood with his usual antics.

I couldn't help but giggle and snake my arm into his, watching Akio roll his eyes lightly and nod.

"Yeah, yeah, Dabi. I get it, you enjoy making my life harder. Now, that either means you're edgy, or you secretly want me. Haven't decided which one it is yet." He teased smugly, snickering in his own victory when Dabi scoffed in annoyance.

"If you're that confused about it, I'd be happy to clear it up for you." The stitched man threatened, smoking his free hand a bit to emphasize his point.

Akio smirked and raised a small cheers at him with his glass, ensuring he got the last word in as he turned to leave with one more point.

"Just so you know, that sentence still doesn't clear it up." He called out over his shoulder, making Dabi hum in distaste as he glared at him.

Dabi and I remained in comfortable silence for a moment, watching Akio make his way towards Kaito's men.

"That fucker will always be annoying, huh?" He asked rhetorically, voice barely stripped down to a little softness now that it was just the two of us.

But, not much softness, considering we're about to make our way to Euphoria.

Regardless, I hummed softly to Dabi's point, letting a soft smile of amusement play on my face for my best friend.

"Akio's strong personality is definitely not for everyone. But, then again, my awkward one isn't either. Neither is your broody one, for that matter. Maybe that's why the three of us mix well together. We're weird and we know it." I chuckled lightly, giving Dabi's arm a small squeeze so we could make our way to Euphoria.

He grunted dryly at my point, no doubt feeling sour that I grouped him into a friendship with Akio and I.

"Speak for yourself. I already know I'm cool as shit." Dabi murmured, hints of tease barely detectable in his voice and minuscule smile.

His smile barely curled a bit higher when I giggled, snuggling up to him closer as we slowly began the trek across the venue and towards Euphoria.

"Mhm. You paint your nails black and don't hold the door open for people. What more can a girl ask for in a relationship?" I teased, causing Dabi to turn his gaze towards me with brows slightly raised.

"Oh? Where's your mind at, little sapphire. I thought we were talking about friendship shit. Not relationship shit." He pointed out, allowing me to glide him through the crowds of people with ease.

I kept my gaze forward, realizing he was right. But, of course, I'd rather not admit that. He already knows I like him. No need to bring anymore attention to something that's never going to happen.

"Well...I'm simply playing the character. You know, thinking like your fake girlfriend, of course." I uttered a bit unconvincingly, keeping my gaze forward as Dabi and I walked.

"Is that so?" He questioned condescendingly, curling his arm around my waist a little tighter.

"Mhm."

My response was short and sweet, even a little cold admittedly as my feelings for Dabi still linger bitterly in my mind.

We walked in comfortable silence for a short pass of time. It wasn't until we were halfway across the premise to Euphoria now, having just passed the classical orchestra and mural of roses, that Dabi finally spoke up.

"Well, since we're just acting, let me give you some advice. As your fake boyfriend." Dabi uttered, giving my waist a small squeeze with his hand.

The action caused me to jump and gasp, immediately turning around to face him with reprimand.

But, my discipline quickly fled when I saw he was already looking down at me, steely eyes piercing my features with hints of concern he wished were never there. He spoke plainly and boredly, contradicting the emotion his orbs held.

"You'd be dumb to spend longer than five minutes on the third floor. Look for something we can use to get dirt on the fucker, and then get out of there. If anything seems off, just forget it and leave. It's not the time to play hero when you're in a house full of villains." Dabi stated, giving his brow a small raise.

And that's kind of him to say. He'd rather I prioritize my safety and leave the third floor empty handed.

But, that's not what we came here to do. I need to try a little harder than that.

"Five minutes or not, I've gotta try to find at least something. Euphoria wouldn't keep it hidden unless she had a reason. I need to figure out what it is." I reasoned, feeling Dabi grip my waist tighter as his orbs became hotter with frustration.

"No. You don't. Here's what's gonna happen, little sapphire," he started off lowly, dragging me closer by my hip before my chest settled against his. "You're gonna be in and out. Five minutes, that's it. Or I'll go up there and kill you myself." He threatened smoothly, furrowing his brows subtly in unease with the situation.

I met Dabi's gaze fearlessly, leaning in tauntingly closer to call him out.

His eyes trailed to my lips as I did so, not even bothering to hide the way he studied them as I spoke.

"I don't believe you would." I murmured in challenge, standing my ground.

Dabi's jaw tensed at my defiance. And as much as he desperately tried to hide his care, it was only getting harder for him to do so as time went on.

"Then fucking try me." He said raspily, digging his fingers into my waist.

"Careful, Dabi. You're almost starting to sound like you care about me." I reminded him, mostly just saying what I knew would force him to let me go.

As expected, it worked when Dabi's eyes widened ever so slightly in realization. He released me from his grip and scoffed, still looking consumed with frustration as he spoke.

"If me threatening to kill you makes you think I care, then it may be time to get some serious mental help, sweetheart." He muttered, looking past me resentfully so he wouldn't have to meet my eyes.

"Good. Then, I assume that means you have no problem with me staying on the third floor longer than five minutes." I pointed out, not necessarily knowing what answer I wanted from him.

I want so badly for him to care. But, that's not the person he is.

"Do whatever you want. Your funeral." He dismissed coldly, still refusing to meet my gaze as he looked everywhere else.

Knowing that's the answer I should want to hear, I ignored the buzzing pain in my chest...giving Dabi a simple nod to end the tense conversation before looping my arm through his once more.

"It's settled then. Now let's go talk with Euphoria."

*****

I wasn't sure if Euphoria had seen Dabi and I approach her spot at the bar, considering she didn't even look in our direction. It was only when she spoke that I got my answer.

"Well, well. If it isn't my favorite Hollywood couple. Vabi. Hm? No, that's not right. How about Diolet. Davi? I'm not sure." Euphoria chuckled suavely, seeming to be in a much better mood than she usually is as she smiled at her own joke and sipped her martini.

I gave her a small nervous laugh to encourage the joke, while Dabi said nothing, gently pressing me to sit at one of the bar stools by the small of my back.

Taking his advice, I slowly slid into one of the chairs, leaving one seat between Euphoria and I so Dabi could sit next to her. It would be easier for me to slip out of here unnoticed this way.

Euphoria glanced over at me before Dabi took his seat, sucking on the olive from her drink as she eyed my appearance.

"Cool outfit." She said with surprising honesty, causing me to look down at her jumpsuit and smooth it out a little.

"Oh!-thank you-I mean, you would know! I really appreciate you letting me borrow it. I promise to return it-a-and I'll wash it first and everything of course." I babbled out anxiously, feeling Dabi's hand plop atop my head in reassurance before he slid in to barrier Euphoria and I.

The confident woman simply hummed, not answering for a moment as she took a sip of her drink.

"Mhm. You can just return it tomorrow." She concluded disinterestedly, causing my lips to purse since I literally just said that.

I didn't get a chance to question her anymore on it as she changed the subject, taking the bait of the plan and no longer acknowledging me as she set her sights on Dabi.

"And, how about you, handsome? You look good, too." She murmured with flirt, disregarding Dabi's 'girlfriend' on his other side as she scooted a little closer to him.

Mhm. Just like we planned! I should be happy about that, I suppose.

I swallowed thickly as I watched Dabi trying to play into her hand through the skin of his broody teeth, causing me to fiddle with one of the flowers on the table when he ignored me and allowed her to touch his arm.

"Tell me something I don't know. Or, better yet, don't talk at all. I always tell you you're the hottest when you keep your mouth shut." Dabi drawled out disrespectfully, making me raise a slight brow of question at such a degrading sentence.

Wow. Is that really how he flirts? Ha, I guess I really have been reading his signals wrong, considering he never speaks to me that way! Not that I'm upset about that.

Euphoria, on the other hand, seemed to play right into Dabi's hand....rolling her eyes softly as she downed the rest of her countless drink and rotated her body towards him.

"But, if I keep my mouth shut.....then how will you be able to....use it?" She smirked seductively, biting her lip and leaning closer to Dabi.

He didn't even look at me, gazing at Euphoria smugly as his tongue came out to wet his lips.

Okayyy. I'm starting to feel like a third wheel!

Didn't Akio say I should attempt to chat with Euphoria before I go? Lemme try that.

I coughed slightly to try and get the pair's attention, pressing my lips together in annoyance when neither Dabi or her looked my way.

Next, came the clearing of my throat in the most un-sexy way, yet Euphoria simply leaned in closer to Dabi's ear and whispered something I couldn't hear.

Classic stuff!

I drummed my fingers against the bar counter, giving a deadpan glare to the wine bottles in front of me, before letting out an ungodly hack to try and separate the two and get Euphoria's attention.

"Phew. Sorry about that. Got some phlegm happening back there." I apologized loudly, looking to Euphoria and Dabi to see they were both engaged in their own conversation.

Did they even hear me?!

I sighed softly as I realized Euphoria actually made the start of this plan go even smoother than we expected it to. She truly had no interest in saying anything to me. I could walk away right now and she'd never even know.

And that's exactly what I decided I'd try to do, subtly looking over towards Akio's spot across the way to see if he would give me the signal.

He was talking closely with Kaito, placing a 'friendly' hand on the man's shoulder, while someone from his posse continued to speak.

But, his eyes were distracted from the conversation, easily finding my gaze a few moments later before looking at Euphoria and Dabi.

Akio looked back to me now, giving his brows a small raise of confirmation to start the mission, before immediately turning his attention back to his own conversation.

It's starting! Oh god! Help! I'm gonna puke! Is it too late to quit?!

Digging my painted nails into the stone of the bar counter, I felt my heart immediately start wracking out of my chest at the tension that had suddenly leveled up.

My jaw was tight and my palms already started to sweat as I turned to Dabi and his new date, not making much of an effort to be heard as they seemed rather occupied in conversation.

"Um....so....I'm gonna........ugh. Bathroom." I mumbled resentfully, not even bothering to finish the sentence properly as I knew Euphoria wasn't even listening.

But, Dabi was listening....barely glancing back at me, before turning his attention back to Euphoria.

Welp. Okay. Here goes nothing.

With my bag, and indirectly my phone, in hand....I slowly hopped off the bar stool and turned away from Dabi and Euphoria....starting to make my way out of the interior of the venue.

Remember what Akio said...

"Cameras are located in the interior parts only. Find an exterior place, and then call for Kurogiri to transport you."

I nodded softly to my own thoughts, feeling my hands start to shake with adrenaline as I tried to exit the cocktail party at the slowest, most casual pace possible. The last thing I want to do is draw eyes on my quick leave.

As expected, no one seemed to notice my leave. I blended in perfectly with the crowd, weaving in and out of crowds, conversations, waiters, tables....you name it. One of the perks of not standing out, I guess, right?

Each step closer to the door made the cold sweat on the back of my neck perspire more, but there's no way I was gonna back out of this now.

Like I always say. I'm sick of being pathetic. I'm sick of being the weak one who can't ever do anything. I'm sick of letting everyone down and never being dependable.

I'm going to do my job today. And I'm going to do it right. There's no other option.

Be like mom.

A few agonizing moments later, I'd finally made it to the open door of the cocktail party, seeing some of the antics continuing into the elegant hallway of the mansion. Conversations. Promiscuities. Drinks. The blatant trading of illegal drugs, quirk enhancers, and other things.

But, I ignored them all, smoothly turning on my heel and starting to make my way down the dimly lit hallway.

At a party like this, the bathrooms will surely be too crowded. I'll head to the outdoor patio that Akio, Dabi, and I had lunch on earlier today. If that's got people, then I'll just try for another spot.

Euphoria's heels clacked seductively on my feet as I traveled down the hallway, noticing less and less people crowding the space, the more distance I grew from the party.

The turn of a corner and then another brought me to a completely empty area of the mansion now, with the opening to the outdoor patio being directly to my side.

Knowing I was still probably being watched indoors, I refused to hesitate as I slowly opened the patio door, knowing I'd have the valid excuse of saying I just 'wanted some air,' if anyone questioned me on this tomorrow.

A breath of relief escaped my mouth when I made it outside, away from the cameras-and everyone else, as well considering the place was empty.

Just to be safe, I quickly traveled down the length of the patio, turning the corner away from all the windows, before pulling out my phone and texting Kurogiri.

My hands shook with adrenaline as I sent the simple message that said 'ready,' feeling as if I waited simultaneous years and seconds before a fog of purple smoke slowly began to form directly in front of me.

Sweat had now gathered on my brows, but there was no turning back now as I watched Kurogiri's portal form fully, displaying the familiar mysterious path to the left side of the third floor that Euphoria had forbid yesterday.

Well, as mom would say...'the first step is always the hardest, right?'

Just go. There's no more time to waste.

Forcing myself not to think, a shaky breath escaped my mouth as I quickly walked through the portal....mostly not wanting to give myself the time to turn back.

I closed my eyes, and I don't know why...holding my breath as I walked the length of Kurogiri's portal...

....before feeling the purple fog already fading away.

Crap. I'm here, huh?

Gritting down on my teeth, I warily opened my eyes...expecting to see the absolute worst, like a firing squad or something, directly in my sights.

But, I didn't see that at all. Instead, I saw exactly what I'd been hoping for-which was the left side of the third floor, completely empty and isolated.

Kurogiri had transported me to the very beginning of the left hallway, allowing me to easily see the side Akio, Dabi, and I followed down yesterday, per Euphoria's request.

But, now it's time to break the rules a little and find out more on this Midas guy. As much as I hate taking risks, sometimes....I guess you have to.

Pressing my lips together, I didn't look back as my incredibly heavy legs started to move and walk the length of the forbidden hallway. I forced myself to see past my nerves and try to take in all the information around me as best I could. I don't want this trip to be for nothing, after all.

Nothing out of the ordinary so far. Sure, this side of the mansion is a little darker than the rest of the place. But, nothing besides that.

I kept walking slowly, each minute becoming more agonizing, before I was met with my first corner to turn.

The deeper I go....the harder it may be for me to get out...

Who cares. As Euphoria said, Midas is on a business trip away from the mansion. At least I can have a little comfort knowing I won't run into him.

"Don't be wimpy." I whispered to myself, shaking out my nervous hands a bit before slowly turning the corner and traveling deeper into the forbidden hallway.

My brows raised slightly at the new scenery ahead of me. I could only stand there for a moment and take it all in.

Now that I'd turned the hallway and got deeper into the place, I noticed the walls and ground were only more decorated. Even more so, compared to what Midas displays to his guests.

The floors were made almost entirely of gold now, with flecks of multicolored jewels splashing the walls.

"W..Woah." I uttered in admitted awe, almost feeling mesmerized by the amount of beauty as I willingly started walking the length of the hallway.

My nerves slowly began turning to impress as I ran my fingers along the smoothly jeweled wall, continuing to walk and notice various flowers and bamboo plants decorated in pots on the ground-and vines above my head.

"Smells good. Different than the rest of the place." I murmured with note, seeing murals of jewels and paint on the ceiling.

"Did he make that?" I questioned quietly, realizing I'd have to turn the next corner.

I did so a little more eagerly than the last corner, admittedly wanting to see what the next path held.

I almost had to shield my eyes at the breathtaking sight ahead, seeing the entire area covered in orange jewels. The walls. The ceiling. The floor. Everything was orange. Deep in beauty, and soft like the sunset.

Looks like the color of Euphoria's necklace tonight.

The smell and appearance of flowers only got stronger, and before I knew it....the room of orange jewels began transforming before my very eyes.

My gaze clouded over in pure admiration, barely registering my feet moving on their own as the scenery in the room transformed into the most beautiful things you could imagine. The ocean sunsets. The cherry blossomed hills. Happiness. Smiling faces. Clouds. Success.

Beauty. So much beauty.

I felt my nerves relaxing more and more, as I walked further into the forbidden hallway, feeling my fingers starting to tingle with a need to use my quirk.

Not only that, but I felt a pull here. A pull to all this beauty. It felt like heaven and I never wanted to leave. All my internal aches and pains felt alleviated. I no longer felt so incapable. I forgot my reasons for coming here, only able to relax and travel deeper into the hallway, hoping....so desperately hoping I'd get to see more.

I was no longer afraid. No longer wary. No longer caring about anything else, so long as I could see this beauty everyday.

When I turned the next corner, or the corner after that? I don't know. And I don't care. The sights only became more and more beautiful, and all I wanted to do was keep going further.

I felt rejuvenated. Happy-almost gleeful as I stumbled around the premise, feeling a smile grazing my face and a pep into my step as I freely strolled down the place.

And, at the end of the final hallway....I saw a door. A dark red door that was encrusted with jewels, just begging for me to open it.

I need to open that door. I need to see more of this beauty, or I might die.

Without a second thought, I began walking towards the door, feeling my hands starting to shake with an itch to use my quirk the closer I got.

Happy tears began to cloud my eyes once I was only a few feet away and I have no idea why. My fingers grazed the cold knob of the door, curling around it to throw it open....

....before the sound of slow clapping behind me finally penetrated my eardrums, popping the bubble of bliss I'd been in like a slap to the face.

I gasped in pure alarm at the revelation of reality, watching the beautiful illusions melt away before my very eyes and turn back to orange jewels.

Was everything I saw....just those jewels the whole time?-

There was no more time to think about the possibilities as the jewels themselves quickly dulled down into dust, leaving nothing more than a dark, empty hallway in my sights, that suddenly looked more eery and terrifying than ever before.

Oh. Crap. I've been caught. The question is, by who.

The person behind me slowly stopped their claps, causing me to bite the bullet and turn around....expecting the worst.

And it was indeed the worst!

Standing ahead of me was, none other than, Euphoria herself.

My brows furrowed in slight confusion to her all black, military style attire. Rather than the frilly, baby blue dress she'd been in a few minutes ago, she was dressed and showered in combat gear and weapons, looking like she was ready for a fight.

Isn't she supposed to be downstairs with Dabi?!

She smirked wickedly, a smirk that looked more familiar than anything else she'd shown me tonight, before ripping a gnarly looking knife out of the holster on her thigh.

"Oooo. That's frightening." I commented raspily, still feeling dazed and lightheaded from everything that just happened.

Euphoria chuckled darkly at my words, twirling the knife between her gloved fingers as she spoke her fighting words.

"Oh, Vicky. I'm so glad I didn't underestimate you."

Thank you guys for your votes and comments! They help me continue the story.

Got some big stuff coming up ;)

Next Chapter Title: You're Doing Alright, Touya.

A/N: all I had as a reference for Akio was that small pic at the beginning, so here's another for you! (I imagine his hair and eyes to be a little lighter like that first pic, but it's pretty close to my imagination).

The server has already seen this, but if you haven't then HERE! Cant find the artist unfortunately, so if you know, then please tell me.
While Akio is the character of the 'cool bestie✨🤙' he will play an important role to the plot of this story (meaning that his scenes in this book are not just character filler) <3

Lastly, thank you so much to KittyStealer for making me this BOMBBBB ko-fi banner!!! Absolutely adore it AND YOU!! Coffee is definitely my morning wine (and wine is my evening wine lmao).
