EVELYN SAT DOWN NEXT TO HER ONSCREEN MOM, PLAYED BY JOANNA DOUGLAS. Joanna started brushing her fingers through Evelyn's hair as Evelyn rested her head on Joanna's shoulder. "What happened to dad?" She asked. Through the corner of her eye, she could see Moira on the verge of biting her nails from her seat behind the screen as the cameras rolled. This was a big part of the movie. Evelyn felt Joanna remove her hand from Evelyn's hair, her cue to pick her head up and look at Joanna. "You know what happened, sweetie." Joanna said, offering Evelyn a tight smile. Evelyn sat up straighter.
"But I don't know, and that's the problem. Give ma any code and I'll crack it; tell me a joke in Swahili and I'll know when to laugh. I know a million different facts in more than a dozen different languages- but ask me what happened to my own dad? I've got.. nothing." Evelyn says, rushed and defensive at the beginning before settling down near the end of her statement. "Someone knows." She says, defeated as she leans back on the glass window of the window seat she was perched on. Evelyn closed her eyes as she asked, "Why this year? And why them?" She sighed as she heard Joanna say, "Cam, you know why."
Evelyn opened her eyes and looked at Joanna's apologetic face. "Josh." Evelyn said, and Joanna nodded. "After what happened last year, people got.. really, really scared. We realized that with all of this money we spend providing you with this curriculum, we never even thought about educating you about a big portion of the population. We never taught you how to work with people outside of this school that you'll have to trust one day." Joanna lovingly caressed Evelyn's hair as Evelyn nodded. It was Joanna who broke the silence. "If you hurry, you'll be able to catch him." Joanna says. Evelyn furrowed her brows. "Who?" She asked her mom. "Zach- the boys. The Blackthorne trustees wanted them to take their finals with the rest of their classmates." Joanna explained as Evelyn sat up, a little more confused. "They're leaving, Cam." Joanna said.
Within seconds, Evelyn was on her feet and yelling an "I love you!" to Joanna as she ran out of her onscreen mother's "office" and into the Grand Hall. She looked around, looking like she was trying to find someone in the crowd of young girls walking around and going about their day. Then, she looked towards the glass doors and jogged over and outside. Instantly, she felt the wind and the presence of another camera on her that had met her once she walked outside. She saw Louis's back and instantly her insides flipped. She pushed it down and walked towards the boy. "I see you're already packed." She said as she raised a hand to shield her eyes from the sun.
Louis turned around, a lopsided grin on his face despite the very convincing bruise on the right side of his jaw. "We've all got baggage." He said as he smiled at her. Despite the people moving around in the background and the cameras on them, Evelyn swore that for a quick second, it was only Louis and herself in the world. But, yet again, she wasn't Evelyn then. She was Cammie, so she reached out and lightly brushed her thumb over the fake bruise on Louis's chin. "That looks like it hurts." Evelyn said as she pulled her now burning fingers away from the boy. "No, it really isn't that bad. He punches like a-" Louis started to speak, but Evelyn cut him off. "Like a girl?" She laughed, but Louis's expression took the breath out of her. He wasn't smiling, he wasn't angry or mad or something, he was just looking at her.
"Not the girls that I know." He said, and Louis and Evelyn stood there for a second, just looking at each other, before Evelyn cleared her throat and snapped both of them back to reality. "Yeah, well. Good luck on your finals. Maybe I'll see you again sometime?" Evelyn started to back up. "But if I ever do see you again, don't try to kiss me in a random alley, ok?" She said, before turning around and beginning to walk away. "Cammie." Louis said, and Evelyn turned right back around. Within seconds, Louis had his arms around her and was dipping her in the courtyard. Evelyn expected for him to help her back up; they weren't supposed to actually shoot the kiss until later.
What she didn't expect was for Louis to give no hesitation and bend down and kiss her. Evelyn didn't know what to do for a second before she melted into the kiss. She reached her hands up to hold his face in her hands, savoring this moment for as long as it lasted. She had heard before that kissing while filming something was awkward and embarrassing, but Evelyn couldn't care less if there were other people around her. At this moment, all that she cared about was the fact that Louis Partridge was kissing her.
Then he broke away. "I always finish what I start, Gallagher Girl." He spoke in a breathy voice as he softly smiled at her. He brought her back up and let go of her and started to walk towards the bus. "So is this your way of saying goodbye?" Evelyn asked, trying her hardest to function after what had just happened. He turned back to her and grinned once again. "C'mon. What are the odds of that?" Louis said, stepping onto the bus. Evelyn watched before she turned around and started walking back into the building, not looking back to Louis and trying her hardest not to start grinning like an idiot.
Then Moira was running to her, telling her how amazing the take was. Veda, Val, and Dakota were running up to her and freaking out, and Dakota even had Lana and Sadie on video chat from their hotel room. Sage winked at her from across the room and gave Evelyn a thumbs up. All this chaos, and all Evelyn could think about was the fact that, even though it was for a role, she had just kissed Louis Partridge. Her whole body was on fire.
