"I don't speak English."
Y/n swallowed as they realized what they just said. Of all the words they could have spoken, they couldn't believe those four words fell from their mouth, "I could have said anything else..." Y/n thought to themself as they stared at the short, light blue gem in front of them, scanning them with her eyes as they did the same to her, "She knows I'm lying. I'm screwed..."
"Ya veo, ¿Eres Y/n?" The gem spoke after her scan, putting one hand over the other
Y/n froze; this is not what they expected at all. They didn't expect this gem to believe them, let alone be able to speak Spanish. They could barely speak Spanish, how could this Homeworld gem? Taking a deep breath, carefully thinking their response over and making sure to translate it perfectly, they responded.
"No."
The gem frowned and rolled her eyes, glancing behind her before looking back, "¿Dónde puedo encontrarlos?"
"...No," Y/n repeated, hoping their response was correct
"¿Estabas diciendo la verdad cuando dijiste que no hablabas inglés?" The gem questioned, squinting at them suspiciously
"No," Y/n said, trying to feign confidence in their response
"Topaz!" The gem shouted as she craned her head over her shoulder, "This is Y/n! Grab them!"
Before Y/n could stop and see who exactly Topaz was and where she was coming from, Y/n turned on their heel and bolted, quickly heading down the street and turning the nearest corner they could. Glancing towards the forest, they came to the conclusion the best way to lose these gems was to run into the forest, hopefully confusing them in the thick foliage. Taking a quick look to make sure they weren't going to run directly into the gems first, they took off running to the forest. Once they ran past the first set of trees, Y/n realized just how bad of an idea this was. Every step they took created a loud sound as leaves and twigs beneath them crunched under their feet. They quickly stopped and hid behind the nearest tree, taking a deep breath as they reached down and pulled out their weapon, clicking the safety off and pulling the slide back, loading a bullet into the chamber. As they did, Y/n could hear the crunch of other footsteps coming closer. Taking one more deep breath, Y/n closed their eyes and calmed themself, putting a slight bend in their arms as they turned from behind their cover.

"Okay Garnet, you just drew yourself," Steven sighed in annoyance as he looked at Garnet holding a simple drawing of herself
"Uh, I like me," Garnet explained to her best extent
"Well, anyway," Steven waved off as he looked back to Connie's drawing, showing an accurate depiction of what the gem he saw looked like, minus the cat ears, "I think Connie was the closest."
"Thanks!" Connie beamed
"This was a waste of time," Pearl groaned as she stood and crumpled her drawing, "We should be preparing for a fight," she told as she grabbed Connie's drawing, "Whoever this is, she's from Homeworld, she's gotta be here for us"
"She's not though. She said, she's looking for her Dad," Steven told
The gems stared in shock, unable to respond with anything besides, "What?"
"Her dad?" Pearl frowned, completely flummoxed
Steven nodded as he tapped his chin in thought, "There are all these people missing. Maybe her Dad's gone missing too."
"But gems don't have dads!" Amethyst reminded
Pearl shook her head as she looked down, trying to piece together the mess of events presented, "This doesn't make any sense..."
"Steven's a gem, and Steven has a Dad," Connie added
"There are no other gems like Steven," Garnet told
"Are you sure?" Connie asked, only to be met with silence and stares from everyone
Garnet shook her head as she looked back to Steven, "We got to get to the bottom of this. We should split up, and investigate."
"Ruby and Sapphire!" Steven gasped happily
"Uh, no. I meant split into teams," Garnet clarified
"Oh right... Wait! No, no splitting up! Y/n says you're dumb!" Steven told, "Sorry..."
"Speaking of 'em. Where even are they?" Amethyst questioned
"They were out looking for Lars... But they said they should be here in 15 minutes!... And that was like 10 minutes a-" Steven went to finish his sentence, but was cut off by two loud pops, sounding off in quick succession, "What was that?"
Connie stood up in shock, looking to the window as she saw groups of birds flying in disarray, startled by the sound, "...Sounds like... It sounds like Y/n's gun!"
"Why would they fire their weapon off like that?" Pearl frowned as she followed Connie and peered out the window
"They must be in trouble!" Steven said as he ran up and checked the window as well "W-Where did it come from?"
"It's impossible to tell," Garnet told, "We have to fan out and find them quickly"
Steven frowned as he turned around, looking up to Garnet, "But Y/n said don't split up!"
"The situation has changed. We have to split up if we want to find them quickly" Garnet said
"F-fine, but if Y/n slaps you, it's not my fault!" Steven warned, "Okay, Garnet you go with yourself, Pearl and Amethyst can go together, and Connie and I will search together!"
"Let's be quick," Garnet nodded as she headed for the door, "The longer we take, the more trouble Y/n could be in"
"Right!" Connie nodded as she headed towards the door, "Steven, let's go!"
"Right behind you!" Steven called as he followed her out.
----
"Steven, over here!" Connie called as she knelt down close the ground, picking up a small object among the fallen leaves and twigs, "I just stepped on this, look."
Steven quickly rushed over as he knelt down next to her, "Whaddya find?" He asked
"It looks like a bullet!" Connie said as she handed the small metal piece over to Steven
"Y/n must be close by then!" Steven jumped as he looked at the item in his hand, "Where's the other one?"
"I don't know..." Connie mumbled as she began shifting the leaves nearby, quickly glancing around before standing up and using her feet to clear the underbrush. Steven began to do the same, sweeping the leaves into piles as he scanned the forest floor.
"I found something!" Both of them shouted after just a few minutes of searching
"What'd you find?" They both said
"No, you first!" They shouted
"Okay, I'll go," Steven said as he held up another small metal item, but unlike the first bullet found, was nearly completely flat, "I think I found the other shot!"
"Whoa," Connie said a she squinted her eyes, "What happened to it?"
"I dunno," Steven frowned as he turned it between his fingers, "Looks like it hit something hard... What'd you find?"
"Their gun!" Connie announced as she held it up, "They dropped it just behind this tree!"
"Whoa, careful!" Steven warned as he approached, "Y/n says you shouldn't wave it around,"
"Right, sorry," Connie said as she slowly lowered it, "H-Here, I don't know what do with it"
"Uh, Y/n told me how to handle it..." He mumbled as he carefully took it from her hand. Steven looked over at both sides before lighting up, "There! It's that switch thing, the safety," he said as he clicked it into position, "It should be safe now! Right?"
"Probably, they wouldn't call it a safety if it didn't make it safe," Connie reasoned, "What'd Y/n say about that?"
"Uh, I don't remember," Steven admitted, "But it's fine!... Probably." He said, putting it into his back pocket.
Connie nodded as she looked around, "So... They were here... Something scared them so they pulled out their gun and shot twice... One bullet hit something and the other didn't. Then they dropped their gun... What happened next?"
"Who knows," Steven murmured, "I can't imagine they'd just drop this and run... Whoever's been taking everyone and that gem's dad must've gotten them!"
"Be careful, they could be anywhere," Connie warned as she widened her stance and lowered her body
Steven nodded as he mimicked her position, hunching over as he began to look around carefully, "I'll go look over there... You go over there, okay?"
"Got it," Connie said as she began to walk the opposite direction of Steven, who was carefully approaching a hollowed log on the ground, peeking into it before beginning to crawl inside.
"Steven!" Connie called out, "It's the gem!"
"What?!" Steven jumped, hitting his head on the log as he attempted to exit
Connie looked up to see a small, light blue gem with a teardrop shaped gem under her eye perched up on a tree branch. Carefully approaching, she put out her arms, "She looks just like my drawing. Come on! You don't have to be afraid, we'll help you. Jump down into my arms, my body will break your fall."
"Are you my dad?" The gem asked
"What? Uh- no, I'm not your dad," Connie said in confusion, "but we can help you find your dad."
"I'm not looking for 'your dad'!" The gem groaned, "I'm looking for 'my dad!' I need to find 'my dad'"
"Riiight, well, we'll... help you." Connie told
"Connie!" Steven called, still struggling to free himself from the log he crawled in, "Be careful!"
"Connie." The gem stated, "Are you Connie?"
Connie nodded as she gestured to herself, "Yes, I'm Connie. Me Connie, Connie friend."
The gem laughed as she flew off, calling out to an unseen friend, "Topaz! I found one! I found one! I found a Connie!"
"Steven?" Connie frowned as she looked back to Steven, still stuck in the log
"Connie!" He grunted as he struggled.
Suddenly, the ground began to shake beneath them. Connie drew her sword out in response, scanning the area carefully. Not long after, a large yellow gem approached; all the humans the two were looking for were merged into her body, struggling.
"Another Gem! She... She has everyone" Connie stammered. The large gem glowed brightly for a moment, turning into two separate gems, each holding the humans under their arms. Before Connie could even react, they ran towards her, holding hands once they reached her and fused back together, trapping Connie inside them.
"Connie!" Steven shouted out as he finally managed to escape the hollow log.
"Look at those organics squirm around," The smaller gem laughed as she perched on top of the larger gem, "Oh, look at this one," she laughed to herself, looking at a human obscured from Steven's vision, "They don't look like they're doing too well. Oh well, that's what it gets for trying to fight back."
"Give me back my friends!" Steven demanded as he summoned his shield
The small gem scoffed as she turned her head in disgust, "Don't bother listening to that 'Steven', he's not 'My Dad'" With a flick of her wrist, she took the bow out of her hair and turned it into a wand, sending a beam of some form of energy towards Steven and flinging him into a nearby tree, "Now, all we need is "My Dad" and we're out of here!" She laughed as she and the large fusion began to walk off, "Can't believe they wasted an Aquamarine on a job like this. It's so easy you could've done it yourself, Topaz."
"No..." Steven mumbled as he reached out to the gems slowly leaving his sight, "You... Can't... Take them..."
