Now when my young naive 10 year old self pictured her future the reality I was in now wasn't what she saw.Although I have to be fair in saying that were I am now isn't too bad either.
You see I lived in an orphanage, well up until the ripe age of 13 when my two best friends and I ran away in search of something more.We knew at the time that leaving the safe security of the orphanage was a very stupid idea and is how we landed up living in an old abandoned barn on the outskirts of a large town. But our strong senses of adventure simply didn't care. Its also how we came across two other young homeless girls and having our Clan expand from three to five.
Now all together we live in our barn, which was no longer manure filled and rotting, but a secure and inviting home inhibited by us.We had everything you could possibly need including a sofa, table and chairs that were quit rusty and old but we don't exactly have any money either. We also fixed up the old rotting walls, covered any holes and a dirty floor with old carpet we found. In the hayloft is were we slept, granted through our circumstances we have had to opt using hay bales with blankets and pillows for beds and my back doesn't thank me for it.But all in all it may not look or sound like much but it's home.
Although I sometimes wish to go back to such a life with order and discipline but I couldn't stomach the sense of shame and guilt I would suffer by leaving my clan, so I stay. Its not that I hate this life that gives you a sense of freedom and away from the clutches of society but I do also want to go back to school and finish my education.Everyday I see regular teenagers going to school and having fun at the park.My 13 year old self would never have missed school or having such a normal life but my teenage 17 year old self strives to maybe integrate back into it.
Now-"HARLOW"! someone shouted as I clumsily stumbled out of my hay bale bed landing with a thump on the ground.Annoyed I looked up to see Loki, she was one of my friends that I left the orphanage with and as her name suggests, yes she was most definitely the most devious and mischievous among us all.Now she has stated multiple times that she misses nothing of her old life and, if anything, hated it.She never was very good at school so I can understand the freedom and sense of individuality she must get.Even I must agree that she was defiantly made for this sort of life in the 'wild'.
"Loki what the hell" I grunted as I heaved myself up onto my feet glaring directly into her chocolate brown eyes "well I saw that you were in another one of you inner monologue things, so I decided that I shouldn't pass of this perfect chance to scare the shit out of you" she answered with an irritatingly smug look on her face.
"Unbelievable" I muttered, shoving past her to climb lazily down the ladder before she could say anything else.Once down I came face to face with Arden, she was our hunter-gatherer and quite short to, but don't let her small size deceive you as she and I quote (by her) 'will fuck you up'.Loki and I found her wandering around aimlessly in the wood after being kicked out by her parents also at only 13 years old, hence why she joined our clan."hey Harlow"she politely said and I was about to replay but a quick bang on my head by Loki prevented that, so I turned with one swift motion and gave an angered look, which she of course only smiled cheerily at.Arden at this moment sensed my anger and thought it best to back away to tend our dog Parker.
"What do you want Loki" I yelled, looking at her expectantly "Dinner ran of again and you know how I can't live without him" she innocently answered.I was furious, Dinner was our pet chicken that we also found in the woods and it seems that Loki has formed an almost unhealthy obsession with the stupid thing. "So, what do you want me to do about it" I grunted "help me find him" she asked like it was a statement rather that a question.
"No" I firmly stated, I almost felt as though I had won until "I won't get you that thing that you asked for" she once again smugly said. Now I knew that I had no choice in the matter as Loki, who was our thief and would regularly ,at night, creep into the near town and swipe what needed, anything from home appliances to tools, from those stupid oblivious locals. So no matter how dim-witted Loki may seem its made up by her strangely fascinating ability to sneak almost invisibly through people's houses. The good thing about this is that nobody even knows that we exist, people tend to stay away from our area due to a rumour about it being haunted. We use this to our advantage, so if anybody comes by Loki uses her other more mischievous talents to scare them of.
Realising I had lost this battle granted me half a day searching through the dense forest for a stupid chicken alongside another stupid chicken in the form of a human.yay me.
