Tonight was the first night of tutoring. His name was Nick. Sam was right he was strange well by strange I mean he never said anything just nods, shrugs, and shakes his head. It was almost as if he doesn't know how to talk. But he learns quickly.
When tutoring was over Mr. Stewart had to take me home.
"I'm sorry that he didn't communicate at much." He turned to me, "He's been really quite lately. We don't know what's wrong with him."
"It's okay." I replied with a smile. "He did well. Tomorrow I'll try to start a conversation with him."
Mr. Stewart smiled.
"You're a great kid Leah. I wish your mother could see it."
So did I. But all she sees is a mistake.
When I got home I went straight to bed. Then I got a call.
"Hello?" I answered in a tired voice.
"Is this mat-- I mean Leah?" A frantic voice replied,
"Yes? Who is this?"
"This is Sam's mother. She attempted suicide and is on her way to the hospital."
I suddenly became wide awake.
"Please come meet us there!" She began to panic. "She needs you now!"
Then she hung up
I got out of bed and ran upstairs
"Mom! Mom!" I anxiously shouted
"What matt?"
God I hated that name.
"Sam is in the hospital! Please I need to go there!"
"No. I don't like her."
In that moment the anxiety left my body and mind and was replaced with anger.
"I DONT CARE!" I shouted, "SHES MY FRIEND, SHE ACCEPTS ME!"
I was no longer afraid of my mother.
"SHES A BETTER PERSON THEN YOU'LL EVER BE!"
My mother stood there shocked.
"Take me to the hospital or I'll run there."
She grabbed her keys and I followed her into the car.
When she dropped me off I didn't say goodbye instead I said: "Don't bother trying to pick me up till tomorrow."
I ran into the building
"Do you know where Sam McKay is?" I asked the lady at the front desk.
"Yes she's in room 476 on the 3rd floor."
I ran faster then ever. I didn't take the elevator I ran up the stairs.
Room 474... 475... 476!!
I ran in.
"Sam!" I shouted
Her face was swollen and her wrists were bright red.
"She's in a coma." Her mother told me.
I sat in a chair next to her, Grabbed her hand, and rested my head on her bed.
"Sam...." I whispered "don't worry sam I'm here."
I fell asleep holding her hand.
I woke up holding her hand.
It was about 8:30 I look at my phone
"1 missed call" I whispered
I call them back.
"Leah? It's Mr. Stewart I heard what happened so I let the attendance know that you won't be here to day."
"Thank you sir I appreciate it."
"Not a problem." He replied "tell Sam that we'll be praying for her."
"I will."
I hung up and rested my head back on the bed
"Sam please wake up." I whispered
I began to cry. I only just met this girl and she already became important to me. Amazing really.
Just then I felt her squeezing my hand.
"Hello Leah." She whispered
I smiled. "It's about time you woke up.." I chuckled
She giggles and looked at me.
"Leah I'm not gonna make it."
My heart dropped
"don't you dare say that Sam" I shook my head. "You're going to be okay."
I began to cry again.
"Shhhhh.. Leah..." She whispered, "there's so much I need to tell you."
"What is it?"
"One of the doctors" she slowly spoke "wouldn't help me because I'm a lesbian... And so there was only so much the nurse could do..."
I felt anger and sadness.
"Shouldn't he get fired for that?"
"Yes.. He should but he can't... It's legal for him to do that..." She began to turn pale.
"Stay with me Sam please. Sam this world needs you." I began to cry some more. "Sam... Why did you do it?"
She sighed. "Because no one likes people like us Leah." She looked up, "Ever since I came out my parents have been getting rude comments from the church. I heard them talking about sending me away... Then I go on my laptop and find death threats from adults... Grown ups Leah.. I try to act so stuff so that no one bullies me at school but I get called names and pushed around outside of school... I couldn't take it anymore Leah." She began to cry and she turned to me and wipe a tear on my face. "Leah please don't forget about me..."
"I won't." I smiled "I promise."
"Good... There's something I made you... It's at home..." She reached for a pen and paper, wrote something down, then gave it to me. "Go into my room and in my folder... A pink one... You'll find it. It'll tell you something about me that I wish I told you earlier." She tighten her grip and looked at me. "Leah Trey..." She whispered,
I held her hand tighter
"Yes Sam?"
"Thank you for everything"
I smiled
Then she looked me in the eyes and whispered "I love you..."
She looked up and took her last breath
The line went flat.
Then a bunch of nurses and a doctor came in. Everything was going in slow motion. I stood there staring at Sam.
"3...2...1... Clear!"
A flash lit the room
"3...2...1... Clear!"
No pulse... She was gone.
"Time of death 8:48" the nurse announced.
I began to hyperventilate
Everything became a blur.
Then everything went black.
I never forgot that morning.
I never forgot her.
How could I?
She's the one who brought Leah to life.
