Chapter 1. Brianna

Hi. My name is Brianna Williams. My day has been very... eventful. And I almost died a few times as well.

It was the last day of school before the summer holidays. I had just said goodbye to my best friend Katie. Someone had just come to pick me up to take me back to the orphanage. My parents died in a car crash two years ago. I've been living in an orphanage in the summer and going to boarding school during the year ever since. When we were almost ready to leave, I remembered that I left my notebook in the dorm. I rushed back in to get it.
When I came back downstairs, I walked past one of the music rooms. I heard voices, and I was just about to walk past, when I heard someone say my name.
"Brianna is so weird!" Exclaimed a voice I knew only to well. Nicole Summers. My arch enemy. We used to be best friends, but then I told her I believed in the Greek Gods, and she just laughed at me. The next thing I knew, we were fighting. Not just fighting with words, but an actual physical fight. But the teachers heard us and stopped us. I spat at Nicole. She got taken to the dorms while I got taken to the headmistress. We've been enemies ever since.
Then I heard another voice saying "Yeah, she always goes on about wanting to become one of Artemis's hunters. She just can't get it into her thick skull that they're not real."
I felt my gut wrenching. That was my ex-best friend, Katie. I stormed into the room.
"Why don't you say it to my face then." I said quietly.
"Oh! B-Brianna! I didn't mean-"
"Don't say you didn't mean it!"
"Fine! You need to get into your thick skull that the Greek Gods aren't real!"
Nicole smirked. "You see Brianna, everyone thinks you're crazy for believing in the Greek Gods. Just take the hint. No one wants you."
I shrank back ashamed. Nicole had always said that to me, but Katie was always there to make me feel better. This time, I was alone.
"Maybe no one wants me," I said quietly, "but I don't care what you think! I don't need anyone! Especially fake friends!"
This time it was Nicole who recoiled. I gave her a triumphant smile, then turned around and left. I walked down the corridor and turned left. Then I saw it. What looked like a giant wing. I tiptoed to the end of the corridor and peeped around the corner. The hideous monster was there. It looked mostly human, except it had wings and fangs. I turned back, breathing hard. I tried to calm myself down, but I couldn't.
I considered going back to Katie and Nicole, but I figured they wouldn't believe me. I looked around the corner again and it was gone. I was just about to go after it when someone tapped my shoulder. I turned around, expecting to see Nicole and Katie. Instead I saw the newbie, Olivia. She's only been coming to the school for 2 weeks. She wasn't in any of my classes, so we never spoke.
Now, she was holding a bow and a quiver full of arrows was on her back. She put a finger up to her lips to tell me to be quiet. Then she turned around the corner and went after the monster.
It took me a few seconds to process what what had just happened. Then I realised I had just sent her to go fight the monster alone. I looked around the corner and there she was at the end of it.
I tiptoed after her.
She took an arrow from her quiver and notched it to her bow. I kept creeping towards her.
When I took my next step, it was on a creak in the floor. Olivia must have been startled, because she turned around and shot her arrow with amazing speed. I don't even realise it was coming at me, but somehow, I dodged it. I have no idea how. But when I looked at Olivia, she was staring at me in shock.
Then, at that moment, I saw the monster behind her. I picked up the arrow and threw it.
I thought it would have just distracted the monster and being Olivia back to her senses, but I shot with deadly accuracy. It hit the monster in the heart and it exploded into dust. Olivia looked at me and spoke.
"You need to come with me. Now."
