Map of Kirai's home
It was very early in the morning on July 7, 1986. Kirai Kako was unable to sleep that night, so she went to explore. She realized that she had never explored the home she had been living in for 3 years. She decided to take on the task.
There were many bookshelves in the backroom, the room on the other side of the living room. The books were lined with information. Medical studies, ancient archaeology, modern and old linguistic encyclopedias, fiction works, and many more. Kirai took in the assumption that the previous householders may have been professional scholars, trained in many fields of study.
She went into the unused bedroom after looking through the backroom. She had never been in this bedroom before, as she never found any reason to do so. She only glimpsed at it when she first arrived here three years before, and hadn't noticed any details. It also was the only room in the house she hadn't gone into yet. Having explored the rest of the house, Kirai decided to finish the job and discover the last room.
Walking into the room, she smelled the scent of age-old wood and cardboard hanging in the air. Seems like the room has been abandoned for many, many years. Impossible for her to tell how many, however.
The bed was rather small, as though to fit only one person. Yet, there were two bedrooms in the house, and some other clues in the house indicated that a married couple lived in the home previously. Why were there two bedrooms? Did the couple separate from each other?
Kirai wondered without shame of these things.
Near the foot of the bed was a desk with an old television set. Possibly an import from Germany, when there was a mass import of CRT televisions back in 1949. Presently, in 1978, 8 years ago, there was another mass import of television boxes. This kind of TV that Kirai presently knew of was the very new LCD TVs, imported from America.
Moving on, she examined the rest of the room. There were small holes and cracks in the floorboards, large enough for a mouse to fit through. The floor would creak at a moderate volume when she stepped on it. Another reminder that this house is indeed old.
Lining one wall of the room was another bookshelf, largely empty, but contained a few works of fiction here and there. Kirai looked through the bookshelf, looking to find anything of interest, but nothing came up.
Suddenly, a noise caught Kirai's attention. It was the muffled sound of scurrying, as though an animal was crawling underneath the house, where, Kirai assumed, must be abundant with vegetation. The noise came from under the floor, and she assumed, from where it sounded to be, was under a desk near the table with the TV. Looking at the desk, she found nothing special about it.
Then she noticed that the desk had drawers. Curious, she opened the top drawer of the desk. Inside was a fountain pen, a few notebooks, and a strange necklace with an amulet. She studied the amulet for a few seconds, but couldn't see too well in the dark, so she put it in her pocket, and proceeded to examine the notebooks.
