"Gwen get up now! We must get to the basement!" Gwen's father commanded as he woke her up "Dad? What's going on?" She asked drowsily "No time! Just do as I say! Your brother and mother are already down there! Come!"

As Gwen followed her father downstairs, he picked up a sword from its mantle ""Follow me and stay quiet." he whispered.

She could see smoke coming from the forest nearby as they ran quietly to the barn. "Inside! Inside now!" Her mother said as they neared the basement. When they came in her father closed the trapdoor.

"What's happening?!" Evan, Gwen's younger brother asked in a hushed tone. "Bad things, son...bad things." Their mother said.

"Mom? I'm scared." Gwen cried. "Shhh my child, it will all be over soon." her mother comforted.

They heard screams and dark laughter from outside. They all remained quiet, they also heard the sound of buildings collapsing.

Three hours later, they heard horses and cold steel meeting steel. "Is it them? Is it the knights?!" Evan asked

"Perhaps my son? Perhaps, we will stay in here a little longer, then come out." his father said

"Any survivors? Anybody at all?" A voice asked, it was not an evil voice, so their father readied his sword just in case as he creaked open the trapdoor.

The first thing he saw was that the barn was torn to pieces, holes were gaping through the roof and walls.

"There are some over here!" Somebody shouted. "Sir, are you alright? My name is Sir Alex, I will help you if I can. If you need something, search for me." he said as he took his leave and others came to them, searching for wounds.

When they came out, they saw that everything was destroyed, their house was nothing but rubble, fields were ruined, and livestock missing.

As they all broke down, Gwen felt angry, angry that she hid and did nothing while her neighbors and friends were killed, she was angry that she was vulnerable and weak, a 13 year old girl who did nothing, not even try to do anything, just hid.

As she stared at the woods she made a vow to herself that she would never be vulnerable again, that she would never be weak again, and that she would never be defeated again.
