The hair-tie doubles as a cheap bracelet for the mother as she braids her daughter's blonde hair over and under. She goes to secure her daughter's hair with the sparkly silver hair-tie but the metallic flecked band snaps at the seam the second time she twists it around the braid. The mother sets the broken band aside and secures the braid with a plain black elastic. Later, she returns to the silver hair-tie with a scrap of ribbon. One inch by eighteen inches of blue and green polka dots to match her daughter's favorite sundress. The girl's mother stitches either end of the durable ribbon into loops, pumping her antique Singer sewing machine back and forth with her foot. The mother threads the glittery hair-tie through the ribbon loops, creating a headband. Tugging on the knots, the mother ensuring they are secure before slipping the headband over her daughter's braided hair like an elastic crown.
