I saw the glass drop from my hand and smash into a billion pieces.

This is bound to happen when I always forget that there is a counter above my head, whenever I bend down to keep the order diary.

Ugh. What a mess.

"Come on, dear broom mate!" I tried to fake enthusiasm in my voice, just because I heard that doing so gets the work done faster.

The light thundering outside distracted me from cleaning and the very next moment, droplets of water on the large glass window indicated the presence of a light shower. My lips let out a soft sigh upon seeing the gloomy weather as I quickly finished the cleaning and started to prepare the last batch of cookies for the day.

As I was busy kneading the dough, the door flung open, revealing the lean figure standing outside. The sound made by her high heels as she walked echoed in the whole shop.

She pulled out a chair and sat on it, taking her glasses off.

My back felt her petrifying stare, but I chose to ignore it and continued kneading.

"Eric." She broke the silence. "Finish all of today's orders as soon as possible. We might be getting a huge order tomorrow, so there's a lot of work to be done."

"Y-Yes Ms. Aiden."

She gave me a strained smile and headed to her room.

I just stood there, with an expressionless face.

Why is she like this? It's been more than a year since I started working at her bakery, yet she always talks to me in such a cold manner. And her stares? Don't even get me started on that. They always seem to scare the wits out of me.

Ms. Aiden, owner of 'Butternut Bakehouse' offered me a room to live in when I started working for her. The small bakery was like an extension to her house.

Probably I'm just tired and in need of a break from all of this work. I ruffled my hair and took small steps towards my room, avoiding the black door of her room in the way, as always.

I checked my diary, only to crib at the fact that I was left with one last order to deliver.

As I was busy packing all the boxes, the bakery's owner interrupted me.

"Going to deliver an order?"

"Yes."

"Good."

I grabbed my coat and rushed out the door, avoiding eye contact with her as much as possible. My hand fished out the headphones from my pocket and I put them on, wending my way towards the nearby apartment.

As I walked down the deserted street, a weird sensation surrounded me with the humid air.

Suddenly, I felt a swift movement to my right, as if something were rushing across my field of vision.

I broke out in a cold sweat, and felt my heart flip in my chest.

Before I could react, a massive blow struck the back of my neck, the explosion so loud it stunned my brain.

I clutched the box, my hand wrapped so tightly around it that my nails dug into my palm. In a fraction of a second, my body was on the hard ground, and all I could hear was a faint mumbling with the amount of consciousness left in me.

The voice echoed in my ears. I tried, hard, really hard, to open my eyes, but saw nothing except for complete darkness.
