CHAPTER TWO: Day One Greenie

"Em wake up." I heard someone say into my ear. I realized it was newt by the accent

"Five more minutes." I mumbled, my eyes still closed.

"No, come on. Alby wants to see you and your going to miss breakfast. And besides you dont want to miss your first day" Newt said.

I groaned and sat up and ran my hand through my hair. Thats when I realized..."hey newt what do i look like?" I asked

He studied me for a moment. "you have dark, straight,hair thats really long and brown eyes." He replied.

I smiled "thanks. I didn't know."

"Yeah. We don't really have mirrors here so I understand." He said. "We should get to breakfast"

I nodded and we walked out to the kitchen. When we got there the cook, who's named Frypan, gave me some breakfast and i walked and sat in the empty seat beside newt. We were sitting with another boy who looked Asian and he had dark hair.

"Oh right you haven't met Minho yet." Newt said. "Emerson this is Minho. He's the keeper of the runners."

"Hi" i said To Minho

He nodded "so your the new greenie?" Minho asked

I nodded as I shoved some eggs in my mouth.

"Hey um i don't see any girls. Am i the only one?" I asked after i swallowed my eggs.

"Oh yeah...but Alby made the guys promise not to try anything." Newt said "oh and speaking of Alby, he wanted to see you remember."

I nodded and stood up and walked over to where alby was sitting.

When he saw me he stood up as well. "Ok greenie, time for your tour." He said.

I nodded "and my names Emerson." i said, and followed as he walked off.

"Ok Emerson,We have Three rules." Alby said "one, Do your part. Two, never harm a fellow glader. And Three, never go in the maze" Alby said.

"Whats in the maze?" I asked

"Grievers, but only the runners know what its truly like in there." Alby replied.

I nodded "what do the runners do?" I asked

"They search the maze for a way out." Alby replied.

"Can i be a runner?" I asked

Alby chuckled. What was so funny about my request?' I thought. "You have to try out for the job you get. After you try out we hold a meeting  and see what the keepers of each job thinks."

I nodded "so when do i try out to be a runner?" I asked

"You sure do ask a lot of questions." Alby said.
I shrugged."but you try out for that last. You can try out for being a cook tomorrow" he replied.

We walked up to a wall that had a lot of names carved into it. Some of them was crossed out. Alby handed me a knife "here carve your name." He said.

I took the knife and found a blank spot and carved 'Emerson ' in the wall with a little heart beside it. "Why are names crossed out?" I asked

Alby sighed "well those are names of people who have died or who have been banished into the maze but to die and to be banished is basically the same thing because no one survives a night in the maze." He said

"Why does no one survive?" I ask

"The grievers kill them or they get lost and starve to death." He said.

I felt my heart drop "why do you banish people?" I ask

"We only banish people if they dont abide by the rules." Alby replied.

"Oh.."

After the tour, i walked around the glade a little bit. I had nothing better to do. I started wondering, 'who was the boy in my memory? Why does he look so familiar?'. I wish i had my memories.

As I walked i felt someone puts a hand on my shoulder. I stopped and slung my head around and was face to face with newt. We wasn't even 5 inches apart. I could feel his breath and his eyes were locked on mine. I forced myself to look away. "Sorry" i said as i took a step back.

He nodded "what are you doing?" He asked

I shrugged "Just walking and thinking." I replied as I started walking again and he walked beside me.

"Whatcha thinking bout?" He asked

"Nothing particular. Just random things." I said "right now im thinking about how i wish i had a hairband. Its hot out here " I said as i pushed a piece of hair behind my ear.

Newt chuckled "well if you write something down on paper and put the paper in the box sometimes they will send what you want. If its reasonable" he said.

"I think hairbands are pretty reasonable." I said.

He nodded "Well until then, you can use a ribbon to tie it up." He said as he pulled a ribbon out of his pocket and handed it to me.

"Thanks" i said as i used it to tie my hair into a ponytail. "Why do you have a ribbon in your pocket?" I asked.

He just smiled and shrugged. After a while of walking in silence I decided to break the ice "how long has everyone been here?" I asked

"Well alby was the first to arrive and he's been  here for three years." Newt said.

"Three years?!" I asked "are we ever going to get out?!"

"I hope........Well it's almost time for dinner. Lets get to the kitchen" newt said as he grabbed my hand, which sent a shiver up my spine, and pulled me to the kitchen.

Frypan cooked, chicken and mashed potatoes. After we got our food me and newt went and sat down with Minho and another boy. I sat down first and the newt sat beside me. As he sat the side of him brushed my arm which sent my stomach into a flip. Why did my stomach do that?! I thought.

"Emerson , this is ben." Minho said as he gestured to the  boy who sat beside him. "He's a runner too."
Ben smiled at me and nodded as to say 'hello'.

I nodded back and took a bite of my chicken. "So, Whats it like in the maze, Minho?" I asked after swallowing my chicken.

"Well its kinda eerie and quiet." He said.

"Doesn't sound to bad." I said.

"It is." Newt said

"How do you know?" I asked newt.

He looked at Minho and then back down to his plate "just take my word for it. Ok?"

Everyone sat in silence for a while until newt spoke again; " you got a room in the homestead to yourself since your the only girl"

I nodded. Im glad I didn't have to sleep in a hammocks in one of the rooms with a bunch of boys.

"Ill show you to it." Newt said as he stood and started walking towards the homestead. I stood and followed.

We walked up the stairs in the homestead and walked to the door across from newts room.

"Albys room is right beside yours. We figured if your around us the other guys wont try anything" newt said as he opened my bedroom door. There was a cot and a little table beside it. It wasn't much but i liked it.

"Thanks newt" i said.

He nodded and walked out and shut the door.

I walked over and sat on my bed and took my hair out of the ponytail and put the ribbon newt gave me on the table beside my bed. I plopped down on my bed and let out a big breath. I closed my eyes and fell asleep.

A/N: hope you all enjoyed chapter Two. Ill try to keep each chapter pretty long but sometimes i just run out of ideas so if theres a short chapter it's either a filler or i just ran out of ideas.
