The video was over, Lucky slowly set down the phone and ran her tongue along her dry cheeks. There was a faint ringing in her ears as her heart pounded in her chest, She climbed out of bed and glanced over to the mirror hanging on the wall. She blinked at her reflection looking back at her, her thoughts fought back and forth between what she knew was true and what she wished wasn't true. She grabbed her hoodie and wiggled it on, she walked past Poppy who was fast asleep in her bed and walked out into the living room. The room was dark, lights from the streets bled in through the cracks in the heavy drapes hung over the window.
She cracked open the door and slid out, gently shutting it behind her. There were a few people out on the street, laughing and obviously drunk as they stumbled to a convenience store. She flipped up her hood and started to walk down the street, her claws tapping as she walked. She had spent the night sitting in the cold at band, now at 11 at night she was strolling around looking for answers. She strolled down and into the busier part of the city, neon signs blinking and wrapping lines of young people trying to get into clubs.
The occasional stumbling mare, or mumbling dragon would bump into her, sending sweet whispers and slurs of complements to how cute she was. She would nod her head or lift up her lip to show off her teeth and go on her way, She pulled out a wrinkled five note from her pocket. Left over money from when she worked at HoneyDew's flower shop, she blinked dryly and looked to one of the shady convenience stores that's dim yellow signs looked down sickly at her. She shrugged and walked in, a bell ringing over her.
The gryphon behind the counter glared at her and resumed with his phone call, she sauntered up to the freezer and struggled to pull out a blood-pop. She huffed and crinkled the freezer burt packaging, picking off chunks of ice as she walked up to the cash register and slid the frosty treat over to him. He scanned it and gestured for the money, Lucky slid her crumpled bill to him and he tossed the change back. She quietly thanked him and ripped the wrapper off and sucked on the pop, shoving the wrapper into her pocket.
She sat on the curb side, watching the occasional car slow and stop at a club across the street. Dumping out drunk patrons, and picking up others to taxi all across the capitol, Lucky ignored the drunken yelling and singing and started at the ground. Wrestling with her thoughts as she sucked on the bitter cold ice treat, She felt tempted to look over at the castle. Her eyes trailed over, the large castle blotted out by buildings, just a few windows that were lit up and a large spire that had two large flags flapping in the gusty wind.
The words of the video trailed through her thoughts, she matched every description, and it would explain everything. And yet, she felt like she didn't want it all explained, she was mostly content with where she was in life. Even if sometimes she wished she had someone who would worry about her, she shook her head and glanced back up at the club. Her eyes scanned the crowd and in the front of a pair of silken ropes a stocky Hybrid was staring at her, Lucky blinked and looked around then gave the guy a weird look.
He gestured for her to walk over, Lucky finished her popsicle and walked across the street and strolled up to the hybrid. "Hey, where are your parents?" He asked with a soft tone, Lucky rolled her eyes. "I don't have any parents." She mumbled nibbling on the wooden stick hanging out of her mouth, she felt her shoulders trembling from the cold. "Aeea she's an orphann, i'll adopt yoou! I lovee you!!" A drunk woman cried out holding out her arms, two other women next to her cooed and mumbled incoherent things to her. "Hey hey leave the kid alone, it's really late. Are you lost?" He knelt down to look at her, she wrinkled her nose and shook her head. He raised an eyebrow,
"Well, I'll walk you home." He called in something in the radio, Lucky wrinkled her nose. "No I know my way home I can take myself." She muttered turning to leave, she felt a claw tug her hoodie and she turned back to see the Hybrid looking concerned. "It's late, and the streets aren't the safest, I would feel better if I walked you home." He responded as stout unicorn walked in from the club and gestured for him to go.
Lucky sighed and gently nodded and he smiled and gestured for her to lead the way, she started to slowly walk down the street as the Hybrid followed her. The patrons in the line said goodbye to Lucky as she passed, she glanced up to the man who smiled down at her. "Why were you out so late anyway?" He asked looking forward, Lucky sighed. "Having an existential crisis, just normal stuff." She made a wide gesture and continued to walk, He hummed. "So, you said you don't have parents?" He looked down at her and she nodded gently, she could start to see her breath in the air. "Yeah, I was abandoned as a baby, apparently." She sucked her teeth and kicked a pebble that rolled out into the street.
The guy raised an eyebrow and cocked his head to the side, she sighed and looked over to him. "What's your name?" She asked, his eyes went wide and he smiled. "I'm Splinter." Splinter gave her a toothy grin and she smiled gently back at him. "I'm Lucky, that's my name, not like, a trait." She muttered, He nodded and chuckled a little. The dense buildings on either side of them dissipated as they walked into a plaza with a large statue, the wind was strong pushing on their backs. "Can, I just stop somewhere first?" Lucky asked, fighting with her hoodie that tried to fly off of her, Splinter thought for a second and nodded hesitantly. "Quick." He muttered and Lucky nodded and started to walk.
She kept her eyes fixed on the castle before them, that came closer and closer into view as they approached it. They walked up to the fence that kept the public out from the gravel entry way that the castle sat on, she craned her head up and looked at the windows dotted around with lights illuminating them. A bitter feeling wrapped around her throat and wriggled down into her chest, contemplating the idea that she could have lived there at one point in her life. She wasn't regal, she wasn't high class, she knew nothing, she shook her head a little to shake away her thoughts. "Are you ok?" He asked, Lucky whipped her head up to him in shock. She nodded and took a heavy sigh as another cold gust ran up the back of her hoodie. "I know them." Splinter commented looking over to the guard marching with a spear.
She looked up at him and then back up at the castle, "The King and Queen?" She clarified looking out to the street as a car whirred past, he smiled. "Yeah." He looked down to her and she could see he was keeping something from her as his eyes searched her. "Are they nice?" She wrapped her tail around one of her legs and shivered to herself, he grinned and nodded. "Yeah, they're pretty down to earth." He started to walk away and Lucky quickly followed him, "I know how you're feeling." He looked down to her, she didn't say a word as she carefully watched him. "You feel like you were the unwanted one, but you shouldn't." He looked up to the sky, she looked where he was looking.
The few stars that could be seen in the light pollution twinkled down on them. "You're always wanted, even if it's not by the right people." His eyes were soft, he looked down to her and smiled a little. She opened her mouth to say something but her words fought with her. "It'll work out, life finds a way." He shook his head with a grin, she watched as his eyes started to get glossy. She touched his shoulder gently and he nodded and sighed, "Well, I don't think I'm where I belong, but I don't think where I belong is where I belong." She glanced down to the street, her mind urged her to not reveal too much, her thought urging her that surely she was crazy.
"I guess, I feel like I don't fit in." She looked down to the rolling sidewalk and he nodded. "I come from a large family with a bunch of kids, all adopted, and as a hybrid, you don't feel like a dragon, but not completely a pony." His words were soft, Lucky nodded intently at the truth he was spilling. "Life isn't like school, there are no cliques, no lunch tables, you'll find your place." He gave Lucky a gentle tap on the shoulder and she nodded, she glanced up and her house started to come into view.
She stopped and smiled at him, "Thanks, um, my house is right there so. I'm going to go, thank you." She lowered her head and glanced up at him, he smiled and nodded at her, and when she walked into the house she glanced back to see him still standing there. She closed the door and wiggled off her hoodie, stretching out her wing and sighing. She wasn't sure who that guy was, or why he even gave her the time of day, but she was glad he was there. It was nice to know someone out there in that cold world of hers cared even a little bit about her wellbeing.
