Across the Detroit central park, as usually at this time, lays silence. Charlie's paws tap gently against the stone pavement alongside Natasha's side on an evening walk. She lets her mind wander off of reality in the meantime while she tries to keep the fact she only has less than half an hour before having to drive to work above others.
Her body freezes almost enough for her hand to drop the cup of still-steaming hot coffee when her phone starts buzzing in her back pocket. Taking the phone out, she doesn't have to bother checking the caller ID to know who it is. She doesn't happen to have much friends and family more or less either. Spotting the nearest bench she defers the cup and drops the leash on the ground in hurry with a quick prayer to every god out there that the one year old Saint Bernard will understand her manic gestures and stay in place.
Without another second wasted she picks up the call from her boss with a few worried thoughts on anything from the past few weeks she could've possibly done wrong. They fade right after she realizes he's spitting out the usual amount of pointless information and small talk, figuring she's fine.
For the first two minutes her mind only bothers halfway to let in the words from the other side of the call, until the word 'android' clicks in, grabbing her full attention. "I know, I know, you have a pretty strong opinion on these things, but there's nothing I can do about it. The council has made a decision."
"Wait, wait, come again?" She stops him in hope for further explanation and recap of the situation other than that 'Gavin is an ass and everything's his fault', though she definitely would not object.
Hearing her tone of voice he realizes she 'overheard' a few details of their conversation, summering his monolog short enough not to lose her again. "Last week, CyberLife has officially finished the new models of the human tin cans, which are supposed to be specially programmed for hunting deviants. I'd love to give you more detail but I don't know more than this myself, so.."
The rest of his words get lost in the air as the phone gets thrown on the bench while Natasha tries to catch on the end of the leash half a second late before Charlie runs off to a rustling bush on the other side of the local park. With a sigh she picks up the phone up to her ear once more instead. "Sorry Henry, I've got a beast to catch. I'll be at the station in a bit." He doesn't get a chance to answer before the call gets cut off while the brunete attempts to get to the said beast as soon as possible.
Before she barely crosses a halfway, the dog is already running off to somewhere else again, tail waving happily through the chilly air. She decides to give the fight up, letting him to, hopefully, drain some energy out. Barely ten seconds later, the idea proves stupid over anything with Charlie out of sight and a person's yell from not too far away. She quickly makes her way around a half fallen apart wall fence, looking around, stepping on the end of the leash before the dog gets a chance to flee again and pulling him to her feet. Every bit of his attention, though, is currently grabbed by an android laying on the ground, arms thrown up in front of his face defensively, imitating a frightened expression. The first instinct for Natasha is to leave him there and go on with her day pretending nothing happened, but the though of having to explain something to the police in case it's broken somehow makes her stay a little longer.
The android turns its head her way, leaning eyes fixedly on hers while its blue LED flickers a few times before turning yellow. She returns the slightly confused look before the light switches back to blue. With that the android gets back to its feet as if nothing happened.
"Thanks," says the android, fixing up its tie. In her eyes it looks like it wants to say something more, but neither of them sure what. It feels odd to her, given she though they have a pre programmed answer to any possible situation. Which makes her realize she actually has no clue how they really work. A part of her wants to turn around and walk away without a word, but never having properly interacted with an android a million new thoughts discourage her from doing so. 'Can they put a report on you for being a rude jackass? Do they monitor everything in sight?'
"Sorry for the capture. I just let go of him for a second and he's still learning." She notes while forming a way less appropriate answer in her head. "You okay?" If it weren't for the possibility of her getting in trouble for not having control over the animal she would already be on her way to her night shift right now, and the though does nothing to make her already tensed nerves from this interaction any looser.
The tips of the android's lips turn up into a light, awkward smile. "It's okay. No damage was found in the system." She has to take a second not to either throw up or make a comment on the Siri like voice and the thought of having to spend longer than necessary anywhere near in its presence, remembering Henry's call, figuring it's very likely she's going to be forced to work with something very similar from now on.
"Well. Very nice meeting you, but I've to run. Got a.. Beast to survive the day with." She grimaces at her own, not too bright sounding words, before turning around, finally getting to walk away and try to forget this unpleasant early evening.
After of drive full of light, but still annoying, traffic—and manifesting the whole androids helping in the department thing was just a distressing joke of the day, she finally gets through the check-in and continues to her desk. Even after four years of working here she hasn't stopped feeling weird about walking all the way to the back of the hall as everyone gives her a half wit glance from their desk.
Throwing her purse on the desk she steps aside about to sit down, before fixing her gaze at the familiar face, almost knocking consciousness out of the android with surprise. She does manage to keep her cool for the moment though, but completely giving up on the professional approach from earlier, the little energy long gone from her brain and body. "How the fuck did you manage to get here before me just to sit in my fucking chair and what's the fastest way you can physically get out of my sight?"
"Good evening, Lieutenant Carter. My name is Connor. I'm the android sent by CyberLife." She listens while watching Connor get up from the chair, once again having to redeem herself from throwing hands.
"That doesn't justify you at my desk nor does it tell me what you want from me." She sits down quickly as if it was planning on taking it up again.
"You were assigned a case earlier today. A homicide, involving a CyberLife android. In accordance with procedure, the company has allocated a specialized model to assist investigators."
"Hold it there, love. I don't need help. More so from you. Can you just go back to.. anywhere else, really?" It seems more than unreasonable to her to be forced a peace of plastic as a coworker. Working with other people was a pain in the ass enough, let alone being told what to do by something unalive.
"I'm sorry, but I must insist. My instructions are set to accompany and help you in solving the case." Natasha tiredly slides into her chair and turns the terminal computer on. It's pretty obvious there's no point trying to argue, and as it turns out cooperating at least makes Connor not talk all the time, which sounds good enough for now, even if not as good as throwing it out of the window. For a while she thought it's staring to give her a headache.
"Well. At least talk me into the case a bit." She notes, praying it won't take the next hour.
"All I know is, a dead body was found and it probably involves a deviant. We're supposed to get to the crime scene. I have the address integrated in coordinates, it's only three blocks away." She pushes away the google maps joke forming in her head for later, somewhat grateful for gaining a sense of orientation along with the android after a long time of freestyling her way through the city with an old GPS.
"There goes nothing." She mutters under her breath lightly before getting up again, leading the way out of the building.
