“Dude, check this out,” she said, showing her friend an old post as they walked down the halls of the school. “You don’t see posts like this anymore, at least not original ones.”

“You can if you know where to look,” her friend replied.

“But that's the thing. You have to look for stuff like that. You didnt have to do that a while ago, it was all just there”

“Alex, I’m sure it was very similar to how it is now.”

“Nah. there were just less people on the internet back then, so there was less content going around so there was a higher chance of more people seeing a certain post. And back then most of the people posting were funny. Everything was just better, the fashion, the books, the music...”

Walking in sync, the two turdged down the dimly lit school hallway. Other students walked around, some trying to get to their classes and others walking with their friends waiting for the first bell to ring. Tara and Alex tried to stay close so the earbuds they were sharing wouldn’t fall out. Tara looked at her friend with a weird look on her face.

“You’re acting like we don’t have any of that stuff anymore,” she said.

“ I mean we do, but it’s nowhere near as good,” Alex sighed. “ Its all watered down these days, like it’s catering to everyone else so everyone likes it but now everyone likes the same stuff so everyone is the same.”

“I mean yeah, things are different but thats how it works. Time passes and things change,” Tara replied, but it seemed like she didn’t really care all that much.

“If I had just been on the internet earlier I would’ve been able to experience all that.”

Disappointed by what could have been  but never was, Alex slumped her shoulders and her hand accidentally caught the earbud wires, yanking them out of their ears.  The two quickly grabbed the earbuds and put them back before they could miss any more of the song. Passing students glanced over to see what was going on, but continued on after they realized it was nothing interesting.

“Crap. I forgot do the english assignment,” Tara sighed.

Alex stared ahead, not hearing what her friend said. School was pretty boring. Not just the classes, but the people too. It seemed like everyone else had something interesting about their high school experience, like kids pulling elaborate pranks or getting into fights. “Imagine all the ideas I could have come up with,” she continued. “I could have planned out the coolest stuff. Just think of how it could’ve been about 15 years ago-everyone so tired and depressed but everything so funny. I was so close to being born at the right time. Why did I have to be born in the middle of the 2000s?” she sighed longingly.

Tara rolled her eyes and threw her head back, making the earbuds fall out again. “What is it with you and wanting everything to be depressing? Why would you wanna be sad all the time?”

“It just makes you think harder about life,” she answered, rolling up the earbuds and shoving them in her pocket.

Tara rolled her eyes, “It does not.”

Ignoring that, Alex continued, “And the music that was new then. They dont make music like that anymore.” Alex stopped walking and gestured around with her hands, almost smacking Tara in the face, “And the amount of creativity. The art and writing was so good back then. My Immortal was the best piece of literature written. Do you think we’ll ever get something like that ever again?”

“Oh absolutely not ,” she said with a disgusted look on her face. “You cannot be serious. That kinda stuff is genuinely the worst. There are few things that are worse,” Alex started walking again. “ Like?” she asked.
