There's this thing going on in America right now, a CRITICAL THING that I hear almost NOBODY talking about. I'll give the facts first, and then I'll give my opinion afterwards.
So. In a White House conference on American History on Sept. 17th, Trump, as well as adding a ten year jail sentence for people who tear down statues "without permission", brought forward an idea that he calls the "1776 Commission". According to him, "The left has warped, distorted, and defiled the American story with deceptions, falsehoods, and lies." and "Students in our universities are inundated with critical race theory. This is a Marxist doctrine holding that America is a wicked and racist nation." What he proposes to counter this is the 1776 Commission, a plan to "restore patriotic education to our schools." It would be a "pro-American curriculum that celebrates the truth about our nation's great history" and would "encourage our educators to teach our children about the miracle of American history and make plans to honor the 250th anniversary of our founding." The goal of all of this? So that "Our youth will be taught to love America with all of their heart and all of their soul."
All of these quotes are from a White House transcript that shows up when you search up "1776 Commission." It's fucking real.
So, now it's time for opinions. Trump's done a lot of shit in his presidency that have made me angry and blind with rage, but not very many things have scared me. This is one of the latter. Not only is this a direct counter to the 1619 Project, a New York Times based education project that was built to devote more education to slavery and Black History (which implies that the opposite of anti-racism is America, which essentially tells you everything you need to know) but it's proof that this country is speeding towards fascism faster than ever before. Teaching youth to love America with all of their heart and soul?? This sounds exactly like the education system in Nazi Germany, where the core curriculum was changed to emphasize sports, history, and race science (which is complete and utter bullshit) and education focused more on indoctrination and less on actual education. It would erase huge chunks of history where America was built on oppression and has continued to do so every single one of the 250 years it's been around. Plus, every single year I've been in school, there was an American history unit. Literally every year. I know the story of the founding fathers by heart, and not by choice. Education is already brainwashing kids, I can't bear to think of what it will be like with this new commission in place. I'm terrified for my future, of Trump's goals for America, and the fact that others don't seem to think it's that big of a deal.
Keep your eyes open, guys. And, I'm begging you, if you are 18+, FUCKING VOTE PLEASE. Four more years is the difference between life and death.
