ᴄᴏɴᴛᴇxᴛ: One merman is from the deeper parts of the ocean while the other merman is from a beach-like environment, lighter water. Deeper water means darker skin. So a biracial couple.

From Cyreus' pov with some 3rd pov narration.

"You know, I love you Cyreus."

he finally says, his gills pulsating

to the rhythm of my trembling skin.

"It is only because you find my pain beautiful."

My teeth gnash together, my eyes focused on his shimmering scales and

how well they blend with the beach waves.

anger foams its way out of my mouth, leaving in tiny little bubbles of air.

"Your pain is only a part of why I love you."

and his warmth comes closer, masked by whitish skin not spoiled by the sun.

his glossy lips curve.

he's smiling at me, eyes not as blue as the tenerife sea, but as dark as the midnight glimmer upon a calm storm.

"That is the problem, Llyr. You accept my pain, you cherish it but you have never helped to get rid of it!"

his tail flinches at the sudden burst of my indignation, fingers now coiled around the curls of my streaked hair in attempts to calm me down.

his skin is glowing underneath the shreds of moonlight that pierce through the surface of the pacified water, his fins flowing softly like chiffon.

(Llyr has never seen the deeper parts of the ocean, he has always been blessed by ignorance. his skin a symbol of the warm watered people of his kind).

my vexation is clear upon my cheeks as they darken with a furious colour.

(Cyreus has never seen the shallow parts of his home before, he always stayed in the deepest parts, growing accustomed to the darkness that consumed his birthplace and himself. his skin is a symbol of the cold watered people of his kind).

he rubs his thumb over the eclipsed scales that dress my arm.

(Llyr and Cyreus first met at a high-class boarding school for all types of their kin. Cyreus was reading about the sun, his tail swooped over a balcony in the library and Llyr saddled next to him, explaining how the summer solstice worked and how warm the sun could make the water. Cyreus closed the book, and listened, trying not to let his curious eyes wander over the sculpted features of the young boy).

"Your pain is what makes you so exquisite. Deep gashes upon a white frame, each one a different shade. Soon enough, your pain will turn into a canvas I can hem into the plaits of my hair."

(Llyr has never felt pain. He has never seen darkness. He pictures pain to be something to frame upon his wall).

he smiles at me again but his eyes hold a poisonous sincerity to them.

I turn away from his gaze, letting his hand untangle from me and fall to his side.

(Cyreus has felt anything but pain. He has been cloaked by the dark his whole life. He sees his pain as a weakness, something that should be covered by a white sheet, to sweep under the coral carpet.)

"Pain is not beautiful, Llyr."

my eyes search for something else to look at, I cross my arms and float a little ways from him, the frills on my tail sagging with my soured mood.

"Pain, to me, is seeing you smile when I can't, watching you blush when I can't, giving me love when I can't. "

my back is now fully turned to him, I cannot bear to look at his scintillating scales that coat his face in such a vibrant azure, a stark contrast to my unlit and dull navy ones.

"But, you are my sun."

his voice, so weak and pleading. almost persuading enough to let me swim back into his warmth, back into his virulent nails that mark my back.

"If you think my flares will not harm you, then I do not intend to shine on you any longer."

(they should have never fallen in love).
