Announcement: These first two chapters of Part 1 will be based on the "Agent Carter" series. I'm not going to cover all of the story, but Jocelyn is in it a little. I highly recommend that you watch it to understand more; it's on Disney +.

1946

Peggy looked out the window of her apartment, watching New York City work as she reminisced about Steve. It's been a year since his death and she still hasn't moved on. Steve was different than other men. He made her feel like a natural, respected woman, and there were so many adventures when she was with him: the war, the missions, and being a leader in the SSR.

Now, life is bland. She works at SSR phone company currently where men except Daniel Sousa, a World War II veteran, only think of her as Captain America's "liaison."

A cry interrupted from her thoughts. Jocelyn, currently a few months old, just woke up very cranky.

Peggy walked to the crib and pulled Jocelyn into her arms, calming the baby girl with rocking and shushing gently.

Even though Steve was gone, Peggy still had Jocelyn, her and Steve's daughter, and she absolutely loved the baby. This child was now her light in the dark world; it was the best thing that ever happened to her.

After Jocelyn calmed down and went back to sleep, Peggy got ready for work while Caro Emerald's That Man played in the background. As she pulled up the bed to the wall, Colleen O'Brien, her roommate, came in.

Colleen was born in New Rochelle and then moved to New York City, becoming Peggy's roommate. She worked as Jocelyn's nanny during the day, and at night, she worked in a factory.

"Don't bother," Colleen sighed.

"Colleen," Peggy greeted.

"I can't feel my feet. They let ten girls go yesterday." She helped Peggy pull down the bed. She looked queasy and sneezed.

"Did they say why?"

"Because ten more G.I.s got discharged. I had to show a guy from Canarsie how to use a rivet gun." Colleen sat down on the bed, holding a tissue. "Oh, I think I have tuberculosis."

"You loaned this to me last night while you were at work," Peggy gave Colleen's red petticoat back to her.

"It looked better on you," Colleen scoffed, refusing to take it back. "Kind of thing might really catch a man's eye. Say, on a... date?"

"Well don't hold your breath. Especially with tuberculosis."

"You know there's a difference between being an independent woman and a spinster."

"Is it the shoes?" Peggy joked.

Colleen chuckled.

"Clock out, pull the curtains, don't put too much energy on watching Jocelyn, just feed her the daily amount, let her sleep and you too. Peggy's orders."

"Okay," Colleen complied. "If I don't see you, remember, we're going to go out on Saturday, all of us. I have the night off."

"I'll try. You know how busy the office keeps me."

"Peg, you work at the phone company. It ain't life and death."

"Darling, you have no idea," Peggy smiled. She said goodbye to Colleen, kissed Jocelyn on the head, and went off to work.
