"What was that noise?" I asked.
Minho and Newt looked at each other with guarded expressions. Something was wrong.
"We aren't supposed to get another one for at least a week," Newt whispered. "This can't be good. We need to go."
He took off, leaving Minho and I stumbling and hobbling behind him as fast as we could. My legs woke up slower than I would've liked, but by the time we reached where all of the Gladers were congregating, all of the pins and needles had gone to my feet.
"Why are we standing around the box?" I whispered to the nearest Glader. He was a full head taller than me and I had to look straight up to see his face.
"That alarm was the freaking newbie alarm," he had to look down so much at me that he had a double chin. I smothered a laugh, but couldn't escape him looking at me like I was as smart as an animal.
"Where is the Greenie!" A voice I recognized as Alby's rang out over the murmurs.
All heads turned to me and a path cleared to the Box. I ran to the Box, wanting the attention to turn away from me and to the person who was in the Box.
"Get down here," Alby called from the Box. Both he and Newt were holding a boy by the arms. He was short, not much taller than me, with dark brown hair that could have been considered black. He was struggling against the two boys grip, probably trying to escape as I had.
He looked familiar to me, like it was tucked back in the corner of my memory but it was just out of reach.
I jumped down and looked to Alby. He nodded for me to ask the first question many Greenies were asked.
"What is your name?" I said in the gentlest tone I could, expecting for him to reply the way I had been told all other Gladers had.
"Thomas," he looked around and stopped struggling.
There was an intake of breath and I looked at Newt.
"Do you remember anything else?" I timidly asked, silently praying that he'd say no.
"No," I sighed in relief and sat down on the cool metal floor of the Box.
My head still pounded and the floor was radiating a coolness that was just inviting. My cheek pressed against the metal and immediately the pounding reduced. It was comfortable enough to make me drowsy. My eyelids began to slowly close.
"Are you okay?" my eyes snapped open to Thomas looking at me with a mortified look on his face.
I nodded and closed my eyes again. I just wanted to sleep. All of the moving I had been doing over the past hour had drained me.
"Come on Y/N," Newt's voice echoed through my head painfully. "You need to get out of the Box. You'll be giving the Greenie the tour in a few hours."
I didn't want to move. The cool metal floor was comfortable compared to the stifling, hot bed back in the med-jack's hut.
"You need to get up," Newt said, this time slipping a hand under my arm and pulling me up.
"Please don't talk, it hurts," I whispered and slowly opened my eyes.
It was dark outside and the crowd around the Box had vanished. There was only a sliver of sunlight left in the Glade. I must've fallen asleep for a few hours.
My legs had gone numb again and I had to lean on Newt for support. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see him smile a bit to himself.
"You need to wake up, we have to climb out of here," Newt stopped walking and put both hands on my shoulders. "Come on. I can't pull you out of here, so you're going to have to climb."
I nodded and opened my eyes wide, trying to wake myself up. It didn't really work but it was enough for me to see where I was going.
There was a ladder, more rungs built into the wall of the Box, that led up and out of the hole that carried many terrible memories. Stepping, or climbing, out of the Box and into the sunlight was like I had been underwater and had just resurfaced. Cool air hit my face and the darkness didn't press in on me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Newt and I had reached the landing between our two rooms and we stood in the silent hallway, neither of us not knowing what to say next.
"Thanks," I whispered and flung my arms around his neck and nestling my head into his chest.
Newt said nothing, just wrapped his arms around me and rested his head on top of mine.
I sighed. I wished that we could stay like that forever.
*sorry for all of the sudden updates guys!!! I was changing it a little bit, but not much. Only a few words were changed so it won't make much of a difference.
I've kind of been MIA for a few days because I've had basketball and it is hard to update when my only free time is when I am at home before I go to bed and in the morning when I am on the bus.
Thanks to you guys who have stayed with the fanfiction for the long run! I'm planning on wrapping this one up in the next few chapters and I don't think that I will do a sequel. I might do an extra chapter that takes place later in time.
I threw Thomas into the mix and I'm guessing that you know who the girl was.
I know that the authors notes on this chapter were really long but i don't have anything else to say, so goodnight! ~Caelyn
