Heidenroslein (Rose on the Heath)

Roderich set his fingers on the piano to start playing a favorite song of his.

Sah ein knab ein röslein stehn
Röslein auf der heiden!

His clear voice echoed throughout the entire room, and he was feeling every lyric. After all, it was his story.

War so jung und morgen schön
Lief er schnell, es nah zu sehn
Sah's mit vie len frau~den

He was one of the soldiers during the battle of Silesia. It was nasty. Being one of the Lieutenants leading the troops, he saw many of his men die.
On a ceasefire day, a Prussian soldier came to spy on their camp. Roderich, having the sharp eye he had, noticed and caught the soldier.

The soldier's name was Gilbert. He was tortured and interrogated, but wouldn't spit anything out. He was held hostage, and on the third day, Roderich personally came in to haze the man himself. Gilbert merely smirked, laughed, and coughed up blood.
"What's funny?" Roderich approached him with a serious look.
"They send shrimps like you to beat the shit out of me now? Tomorrow I might get beaten up by a skeleton!" the man laughed in such an odd manner, but stopped when Roderich pulled his collar and rested a knife blade on his throat.
"If you don't take this seriously," the Austrian captain said sternly, "I will literally cut your insides open and send them back to Prussian grounds in a box. Do not underestimate me." And with that he left the room.

Röslein röslein röslein rot
Röslein auf der heiden

After that day, Roderich was the one who gave daily beatings and interrogations to Gilbert. He found himself feeling strangely warm around the hostage.
"It must be hot in that room," his Hungarian co-lieutenant Elizaveta had said when he told her. "Or maybe you've fallen for him." she smiled at him.
Roderich couldn't believe what Elizaveta had said. He refused to believe it! How could he, an Austrian captain of the army, fall for another man? Worse, a man from the enemy side!
He returned to Gilbert's prisons, giving him even harsher beatings, and attempting to prove to himself that he hadn't fallen for him.

Knabe sprach ich bre che dich,
Röslein auf der heiden!
Röslein sprach ich steche dich
Dass du e wig denskt an mich

Roderich finally burned out.
There were only six of them left.
They had tried all they could, but with too little men, hell, they didn't even have men left, they couldn't do it.
Six men against ten thousand Prussians, fifteen thousand Spaniards, and eight thousand French? They could just surrender. That's what his men had said.

They didn't surrender.
Not until they used up all they had.
They still had their hostage.

"Why? How? Why can you.. How do you... Stay stubborn but still alive? We try to force out information, useful information! But you won't budge! Come on, Austria's gonna lose soon, aren't you going to speak up? You're dying for Hima's sake!" Roderich screamed at Gilbert's face, grabbing his collar. He closed his eyes in exhaustion, but he felt the warm presence of lips against his.

"I-I stayed alive for you..." Gilbert whispered and smiled.

Suddenly Roderich wasn't confused anymore.

Und ich will's nicht lei~den!
Röslein röslein röslein rot!
Röslein auf der heiden

Und der wilde knabe brachs
Röslein auf der heiden!
Röslein wehrte sich und stach
Half ihm doch kein weh und ach

"We can't do this. It can't happen," Roderich looked at Gilbert sadly. "We're enemy soldiers."
"I don't care," Gilbert replied.

"Captain, if we kill the hostage, they'll surrender!" Vash, his subordinate, burst into the room. "We got to spy on them."
"No, no.. We can't.." Roderich muttered, his hand intertwining Gilbert's. Vash saw this.
"Captain! You can't fall in love with this-this- enemy!"
"Vash, no! I order you not to-"
"Roderich," Gilbert said seriously. The captain was surprised to hear his lover actually speak his name. "It's okay. Look, if it keeps your nation safe, it's okay." he gave him a weak smile and pulled him down for a long, passionate, kiss.

Musst es eben lei~den
Röslein röslein röslein rot!
Röslein auf der heiden.

He pulled away, looked away, still gripping Gilbert's hand.
'BANG!' The room was less one live person.

Roderich finished the song, his eyes stinging with tears, his hand aching.

He really couldn't forget that time. The time the rose's thorns pricked the young boy.
