CHAPTER 28

I was running down a long hallway. I was out of breath but I had to keep running. I looked behind me and saw the man gaining on me with the knife in his hand held high. I screamed and ran faster but he kept gaining on me. I saw a door and bolted for it. I turned the knob but the door wouldn't open, it was locked. I turned it again but it wouldn't budge. The man came closer. He was close enough so I could see his face. It was Jace's dad. I turned the knob again and the door flung open. I stumbled into the dark room and saw a light shining on something limp on the floor. I heard a thud and turned around to see the man standing in the doorway. I screamed and took a step back tripping over the limp object. I stumbled backwards and the man laughed

'Don't you recognize him?'

I looked at the limp figure and saw a man laying face down on the floor. I rolled him over and saw Jace's broken and bloody face

I screamed again and the room was filled by the man's sickening laughter.

'Carmen' Jace moaned

I screamed louder and started crying

'Jace! Talk to me! Don't do this!'

'Carmen' he moaned again

'Carmen!'

'Carmen!'

"Carmen!!"

I woke up in a cold sweat screaming. Jace was standing over me with a horrified and worried look on his face. His face wasn't bloody or broken.

"Jace!"

"It's ok Carmen, I'm here, everything's ok" he said sitting down by my feet

I sat up and noticed my face as wet with tears

"Where am I?"

"You're in your room, at your house, you had a nightmare"

"Oh" I said panting

I heard a baby crying and footsteps down the hall. A second later, my mom and dad came running into the room. My mom was carrying a crying Flynn in her arms.

"Carmen, are you ok?! What happened?!" she asked running over to me

"Yeah" I said panting. "I'm ok, I just had a nightmare"

"Do you want to talk about it?" asked my dad

I shook my head

"Ok sweetie. I'm sorry, try to go back to sleep ok? Everything's ok, your safe" she said walking to the door

I nodded and she walked out, closing the door behind her

"Are you ok Carmen?" asked Jace scooting further up the bed

I nodded. "Yeah, I'm ok, it was just a bad nightmare"

"Was it about my dad?" he said with a sad look on his face

I nodded. "Yeah"

"Do you want me to sleep up here with you?"

I nodded and he crawled into the bed next to me. He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me closer to him

"I love you" I whispered into his shoulder

"I love you too" he said kissing my head

"Goodnight" I said and yawned
