A Mermaids Secret

✧Chapter 1✧

It's the Marauders seventh year at Hogwarts, and everyone knew that at seventh-year defence against the dark arts you learned about mermaids and potentially got to see one up close if you were lucky.

Remus Lupin had been waiting to study Mermaids since his second year when he first read about them, the chances of him seeing one up close were close to nothing though. Mermaids are one of the shyest creatures and were not known for communicating with humans, so you were lucky if you ever got to see one let alone go near it.

It was a relatively good day at Hogwarts and while the rest of the Marauders were pranking Severus, Remus decided to sit by the lake under a tree and read. Remus was reading for an hour until he realised that in the water just a few meters in front of him was a mermaid, and she wasn't swimming away from him, she looked quite interested in what Remus was doing.

Remus, looked at her before carefully moving closer surprisingly she didn't move or even flinch. Remus was eventually so close that he could touch her, he then noticed how nervous she was and decided to move back.

The Mermaid looked at Remus again before speaking "what is that?" she said as she pointed to the book that was still in his hand.

"This is called a book," Remus said as he held it up to show her before asking "what's your name?".

"Ava, what's yours?" Ava asked as she moved closer.

"Remus, Remus Lupin," he said as he held out his hand for her to shake.

Ava didn't shake Remus' hand straight away, her mind kept, going back to a conversation she had with her mother about how humans just wanted mermaid for their scales and tears. She had always watch Hogwarts from afar, and at all the people that walk around the lake, they fascinated her, so she knew that they would not be like that.

When Ava, reached out to shake Remus' hand she felt a weird sensation in her arm, that's when Ava knew that Remus Lupin was her soulmate.

Ava didn't exactly know what to do, she panicked and that how she ended up swimming away from her soulmate. Ava did regret swimming away from Remus, but she wanted to ask her mother what she should do before doing anything.

Remus, on the other hand, was astounded that she didn't leave sooner all he hoped was that he could see her again. The reason for this is because he was drawn to her like they were supposed to be together, but it was difficult to explain how or why he felt like this.

"How can I feel a connection with someone I just met," Remus thought.

Once Ava arrived at her house, which was a cave, she saw her mother.

One thing you have to know is that Ava didn't know who her dad was, on a full moon her mother Athena went up to the surface to bask in the full moon's light, that was until she saw a man. She realised after the fifth time they met up that he was her soulmate, but things just went downhill from there, the fifth night was the final night she ever saw him, and all he left was Ava, who at that point was just a baby in her mother's stomach.

Ava swam over and hugged her mother, who returned the hug instantly, even though her mother hated Ava's father, she still loved Ava.

Once they pulled away the smile on Ava's face was huge "mother I think I found my soulmate," Ava said excitedly.

Athena looked at her daughter "who is it my darling?" her mother asked curiously.

Ava wasn't excited to tell her mother that part because Athena banned Ava to go up to the surface "um...well...mother you see" Ava started but got interrupted before she could continue.

"There from the surface world, aren't they?" Athena asked Ava before swimming over and grabbing her daughters hands in her own.

Ava nodded slowly before her mother continued "Ava darling, look what happened to me, I thought your father was my soulmate, but he left me, and he left you. I didn't want you to go to the surface, for your protection, I don't want what happened to me to happen to you, I was exiled from the pod all because I fell in love with a human and was pregnant with his baby," Athena said to a now upset Ava.

"Can you come and meet him and then you can decide" Ava suggested giving her mother a pleading look and not giving up until her mother nodded slowly.

It took them two minutes to swim to the surface, and by that point, Remus was back in his original position against the tree trunk reading his book. It took Ava a few minutes before she got his attention, once she did though he looked surprised, Remus came over slowly once he saw the other mermaid behind Ava.

"Hi, Ava, and hello to you," Remus said to Ava and her mother.

"Hello Remus," Ava said happily.

Athena had never seen her daughter so happy she was never that happy with Ava's dad, it didn't even take Athena a minute, to realise that these two were soulmates.

"Ava, I have my decision," Athena started but not before getting interrupted by her daughter.

"Mum, you've not even been here for a minute," Ava argued back, but Athena kept going.

"I'm giving you my blessing," Athena said, even though it pained her to do it she couldn't deny that Remus made her extremely happy.

When Athena said this, Remus became confused "what does your mum mean?" Remus asked.

Ava turned to her mother, wondering if she should tell him or not, her mother nodded before diving back under the water to go home.

Ava turned back to Remus "well... you see...um...ok ill just say it...we are soulmates Remus" Ava said to him wondering how he was going to react.

"Is that why I feel drawn to you Ava?" Remus said curiously.

"You feel drawn to me," Ava said clearly in shock and all Remus done was nod.

They both stayed there for a couple of minutes before Remus gained some confidence and leaned down and kissed Ava, once they pulled away, Ava pulled Remus neck back down and started kissing him again.

Remus and Ava agreed that Remus would help Ava out of the water and to sneak her into Hogwarts at least once every day. Ava was excited to see the inside of Hogwarts castle.

Remus and Ava stayed by the lake until Remus had to go to dinner, they kissed goodbye, but couldn't wait to see each other tomorrow.

Remus started to walk to the castle, and at that point in Remus' life, he couldn't wait to leave Hogwarts because then he can spend the rest of his life with his soulmate.
